On 1−1−11, it Fig-ures that one one won one. That is, a single star review won the top spot of this day for me. The rating of my meal was one star, but the review shows two stars, because I am giving the start-up a benefit of the doubt on their other menu items. Why name the place«Fig’s»? “Fried In Grease”? No, the food was not greasy. «Failed Inspection Grade»? No. «Forget It Gringo»? Maybe. Seriously, «Fig» is the nickname of the nice owner. I am hoping that after start-up woes he will turn a new leaf. Fit In Gastronomy: It’s tough competition up and down Veterans Memorial, with so many low-budget eateries and trucks. I suppose that is why this owner decided to try for something other than just tacos, pupusas and halal meat, and address blue-collar American lunch food. But, recognizing demographics, the restaurant menu is bi-lingual. Familiar-Item Goods: So, the lunch menu includes burgers, chicken-fried steak/chicken, club sandwich, BLT, tuna fish, Philly cheese steak hoagie, chopped beef, grilled pork chops, chicken breast, basic salads, baked potato, and a lunch plate special. The South-of-the-Border options are tamales, pupusas and nachos… and a breakfast tacos & burritos for breakfast. For I Got: Seeking a healthy meal, I opted for the lunch special of pan-fried tilapia included mixed vegetables(steamed from frozen, and only stems of broccoli) and thin-style French fries(a large plate)… and tortillas. Fish Is Gamey? The fish was served whole, with sliced sides. The fish had filets about 5 inches long and was not fishy-tasting, but was dry and tough(overcooked). The green tomatillo sauce in a bottle was bland, and the top level was darker than the rest(maybe a bit of avocado?). Friendly, In-time, Guest service was ok but no one else was seated(and there are plenty of seats). Fancy, It’s Goal: Décor is plain, at this time. Chairs and tables are cheap, like most low-budget places. But, it looks like the white paint is just undercoat to some future decorating(?). P. S. It also Figures that my previous review relates to Fig leaves.
