This is the same as «Ichiban». BTW it’s the same location. They have good food they offer good ice cream, haven’t been there in at least three months, but I assume they are still doing okay. I think whoever is rating here must have higher expectations for the food quality but they offer more kinds of food than your average asian buffet. I used to go to lucky village on westheimer, until I noticed they put american condiments, mainly mayonaise, into everything even the sushi. But this place doesn’t do crap like that. Yep it’s gotten worse. The ice cream was runny, They are using condiments in their sushi, they had a reduced selection. But then again I had a $ 4 off coupon and I was there at 3, so I got them in the vulnerable time slot. Ordered water, $ 5.75. That’s a record low for a buffet in all the time I’ve been in Houston, now let’s see if I get sick. There is a stomach flu epidemic BTW.

The varieties of buffet choices are good but I spot the manager or owner picked the food had dropped on the counter back to tray; that is big concern to me

This is your typical Chinese buffet with the fried rice and the various types of chicken in various types of sauces. But what’s awesome is the selection. If you’re a picky eater and your friends all want to hit up the Chinese buffet, you don’t have to sign with disdain, because I guarantee there’s something here you’ll enjoy. I didn’t try anything that made me turn my nose up. The food itself is fairly average for a Chinese buffet, but the variety is where it’s at. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn’t crowded at all, but the hostess still sat us right next to several other tables. A little room between parties would have been better, but oh well.

The old Jackie Tan location… so it’s very spacious but they only use half of the room from what I saw a few Fridays ago. I guess the prices have dropped from what people are saying on Unilocal. It’s 7.99 on the weekdays(including Friday) and I think 9.99 on the weekends? We came on a Friday and the place had tables but it wasn’t packed. The selection of food wasn’t much. I mean, there’s a few rows of food but nothing worth me wanting to go back for seconds. My main focus was the salt and pepper sauteed crab. I pretty much just ate 2 full plates of that and called it a night. Really the only think worth eating there. And I do like how they have little individual cups of ice cream instead of those messy machines. I would go back for crab, but that’s about it.

I’m not a fan of eating at buffets, but my parents wanted to try it for a quick meal. When walking in, my first impression was this place is really clean and nice. It was also really big. The hostess greeted us right away and took us to our table. They had sushi, hibachi and also the buffet part. The food was really cold and it was just okay. I had only one plate and couldn’t even finish it. Maybe because it was a week day so it wasn’t very crowded. I could give this place another try possibly on a weekend. hopefully the food won’t be cold =X

I have never written a review for a restaraunt, but after eating here I felt the need to warn others. Myself and 2 other coworkers went here for lunch one day while looking for a good chinese place to eat. I typically will not eat buffets but decided to give it a try. On the inside it was very nice. As far as the food goes everything was the pits. I got general tsos chicken, sweet and sour chicken, lo mein, etc. The general tsos was wayyy too crunchy and the chicken inside tasted terrible. The sweet and sour chicken was similar. It tasted freezer burned and was like biting into a rock. My coworker had the fried rice, which apparently is impossible to screw up. Well kudos to you Golden Chef, you suck at making rice. My other coworker decided to go the seafood route. Bad idea also. She had to spit out her shrimp into a napkin. She had the same problem with the FRUIT. She had to spit out the cantelope she was eating because it was so bad. This may seem one sided so I will end on a positive note. The water was good, the fried rolls were good. My coworker said the red sauce for the shrimp was good. The bathrooms were big. The service was ok. Go at your own risk. The buffet a little farther up the road on highway 6 and bellaire(in the HEB shopping center) was much better.

I have been to Golden Chef about six times since they first opened a few months ago. At first their price was $ 9.99 for weekend and then increased to $ 10.99. It was still very much worth it as they had very good food, for a buffet, and great selection. However, about a month ago, I went there for dinner and noticed that their business significantly dropped. I don’t know what happened as they used to be almost always packed, especially for dinner. I went back today and they had dropped their price to $ 7.99 all day, however so has the quality and selection of their food. I still don’t know what caused their business to drop recently and while dropping their price was a smart move, but decreasing the quality of their food and selection certainly isn’t going to win any customers back…

Golden Chef Super Buffet recently opened where Jackie Tan Restaurant used to be before it closed. I had heard horrid things about Jackie Tan and was a bit wary of Golden Chef. I expected just your average Chinese Buffet with Americanized«Chinese» food but was very pleasantly surprised. Went twice with my grandparents and brother. They have an amazing assortment of sushi, see pictures I posted. Tuna & red snapper sashimi! Different colors of tobiko! That alone already wowed me. There’s also amazing baked mussels, raw oysters, and frog legs! I’ve never seen frog legs at a buffet before and for Asians like me that’s pretty fancy. Oyster were a little dirty, some of the shell grim got on oyster, probably during shucking. Frog legs a bit undersalted. They also have a build your own noodle plate area where you choose your meats, veggies, and noodles/rice and they stir fry it for you. The variety is amazing, I haven’t even addressed a 1⁄10 of the stuff they have. All sorts of fried goodies: potato wedges, crab puffs, taro, calamari. The crab with salt and pepper, I think, was very meaty and delicious. Crawfish were pretty dead and soft, I’d avoid those. Delicious desserts: individual cup icecreams much better than that stuff in machines other buffets try to pass as icecream, fresh and canned fruits, nice pastries. Staff was a bit slow, seemed like most of them were fobs, hostesses took a while to seat us and had that dazed deer in headlights look. They still have some kinks to work out but I think they have great potential. Great for the amount it cost. I will definitely be going back.
