I suppose one advantage of no longer living in a neighborhood is having the opportunity to pay attention to places you never seemed to notice before. It’s A Stitch is exactly in that category. Being located right next to a bar probably doesn’t do much for bringing in traffic, since the store is usually closed when the other is open. But then, strange next door neighbors is pretty much the norm in many places in Houston. It’s A Stitch, although a sewing center, it’s really not a place I’d go for fabric or notions. Despite a name that suggests otherwise, it doesn’t carry either. On the other hand, when it comes to wanting advice on a new sewing machine, serger, or embroiderer, or I need a pattern for something that’s not clothing, this is exactly the type of place I’d try first. A small shop, off the beaten path, with great customer service beats a big box store any time. There’s not so much here that it’s overwhelming, and the staff is eager to make sure I had a good experience. I like that they also have sewing or crafts classes available in a back room. As I stood outside the door listening to the class instructor, it reminded me of an old fashioned sewing /quilt circle where you and your friends or neighbors got together to learn some new things and chat. By the end of my visit, I walked out knowing a bit more about finishing a bag and had a couple of really cute patterns for aprons and wall hangings that were also on sale at steal.
