Definitely my go to place for Contemporary and Classical music. They’re selection of contemporary composers is incredible. Before this place I had to go through

in order to get some good modern music CDs, but know I can just head over here and usually find the CD I’m looking for. They also have a huge selection of Operas both Contemporary and Classical. Check this place out if you have any interest at all in Classical music, you’ll find what your looking for or the wonderful staff there will help you on your way.

Joel used to man the classical section at the Blockbuster/​Wherehouse/​Whatever Music on Westheimer, but the corporate suits apparently thought the likes of Mozart and Mendelssohn weren’t worth the square footage they were occupying. The section got whittled down, no doubt to make room for Miley Cyrus and Nickelback, so Joel struck out on his own. He’s not one of those pock-​marked part-​time teenagers at the big stores, just biding their time until their shift is over so they can go meet their friends at Numbers. Joel really knows his stuff, and can point you right to what you’re looking for, even if you just have a vague tune or musical style in your head. One might wonder if a strictly classical music store could survive, but it looks like Joel’s Classical Shop is doing well — another location just opened on Shepherd — and that’s surely thanks to the expertise of the eponymous owner. If you’re looking to pick up the music of the masters, and want to do more than just blindly buy some Beethoven, this is the place to go.
