The food was amazing !!! Not to mention great customer service !! The women were all 40 and over-they could teach a thing or two to this new generation about customer service. Five out of five! Collard greens are better than mustard greens. Mac n cheese was good too-it’s hard to find good Mac outside of your moms kitchen! I got about 2 lbs of food for $ 10 so I was happy. A++

Absolutely. Amazing. This place definitely gets packed, so you know it’s good. The food was very tasty, reasonable prices, and I don’t feel gross after I eat all of that food. The only thing I can complain about is how long they take to serve the food, but that’s about it. Will definitely come again!

I don’t know much about soul food. I had the meat loaf, collard greens, turnip greens and dirty rice.(All that plus a drink for under $ 10) The dirty rice was the star of the show, perfectly seasoned! The jalepeno cornbread was crumbly but not bad. I enjoyed all the greens(they could have been a bit warmer). The meatloaf was different than I’m used to but I liked it enough to eat it all. Josey’s Place has several more dishes I want to try so I will definitely go back.

The fish and cabbage greens here we’re seasoned perfectly. The macaroni and cheese didn’t have enough salt or enough cheese or enough milk. The oxtails did not have enough salt and they may have to let a little bit of the gravy stick to the bottom of the pan because there’s just so slightly burnt overtone to the oxtails gravy. I also ordered the peach cobbler and it was nothing to write home about. Don’t buy it it doesn’t have enough butter and I didn’t get one dumpling there may have been some type of batter in there but it wasn’t peach cobbler dumplings. I am a baker so I know how to cook most things I enjoy eating out and that’s why I stop by Josie’s. The rights under the oxtails was cooked perfectly and you do have a choice of dirty rice or white rice. I also want to add that if they had just a tablespoon of honey to their jalapeño cornbread batter it would probably taste much better versus it just tasted like regular corn bread with some jalapenos thrown up in there. I will be back for the fish and cabbage greens when I’m on that side of town. But I won’t make a special trip again sorry Josie :-(

Down to earth staff. Catfish was the best and made to order! It’s really good for the price! The Con is that it is only open Monday through Friday and closes at 4.

Oxtail, dirty rice, mixed greens, green beans, corn bread. Some of the best I’ve ever had. Will definitely be back! Very nice people too!

Very clean restaurant with nice steam tables. Very traditional everyday southern food cuisine. They give you and option of: dressing, white or dirty rice to go with your main entrée. I had the oxtails and they were good but those sides had me whipped out of shape!

Josie’s Place is exactly what I wanted it to be: cheap home cooking. Everyone was extremely friendly. They had plenty of food and sides for me to choose from and price was very good. My peppered steak, collard greens, dressing and cranberry sauce were all cooked well and tasted good for $ 5.25. The sweet tea had a bit more lemon than I’d like(if that’s your thing, go for it). My gf had the chicken, which she said was a bit dry. However, minding that it was 3pm, and that we were well past the lunch rush, that is somewhat acceptable. I will be back for sure and look forward to trying some of the fried fish and maybe going a little earlier in the day.

When I need my pure soul food fix this is where I go. The people are friendly, the place is spotless and the food is the real deal. My favorites are any of the veggie’s PLUS the Oxtails or the Turkey wings. The catfish is good as well, but its easier to find fried catfish in town than Oxtails and Turkey Wings — and since I’m driving in from the west Houston Oil Corridor — I concentrate on my stewed or smothered comfort food favorites. Not a fan of their tea, but that’s no big deal and most likely a ME problem.

Oxtails, mac cheese, dirty rice and green beans plus jalapeño bread everything was good one of the better soul food restaurants I’ve had since being here in Houston much better than(This Is It).

Josie’s is an Inviting Warm Restaurant with Nice People & Good Affordable Food. I have been looking for some Good Catfish fried Correctly since I relocated to the Heights 2 years ago. I’m a very picky person & this place has fried catfish that can stand with the Best. The sides are good as well. I’ve tried the catfish after it sat & got room temperature & it was still good(so it Passed My taste test). You can Not go wrong with this place. I am Impressed.

First time here today! As I stepped inside, I was not only greeted by a nice welcome but most IMPORTANTLY the SMELL of good olé SOULFOOD! The food did NOT disappoint. Great food & great service = weekly stop going forward. The daily special for $ 5.25 was turkey necks and 2 sides but they were out so I could of substituted for either meatloaf or baked chicken and 2 sides. It was confirmation to get what I really wanted anyways. OXTAILS!!! I had oxtails, yams, greens, cornbread and country time lemonade. Only wished they stayed open later than 4 pm Mon-Thur and until 5 pm on Frid. CHECKTHISPLACEOUT!!!

Today I ate the catfish plate with potato salad and two sides(collard greens and mac’n cheese). The plate came with cornbread and jalapeño tartar sauce. Everything was served fresh(fish fried upon order). Service was prompt, attentive, and friendly, as usual. Josie’s Place is a great lunch spot serving good Southern comfort food!

Best fried catfish on the planet, at least from my experience. One piece is plenty unless you have a big appetite(two pieces is standard). Best okra I’ve ever had. Best sweet potatoes I’ve ever had. The cake is also spot on, German butter is amazing.

Just like what I am used to in Mississippi. This is pretty good stuff. I got the meat loaf. It is a big ass portion and you can get it on top of your of rice or dressing. It was spicer than what I usually think of when I get meat loaf, but it was damn good. Mac was good. The green beans were good. The corn bread was good. I am gonna try and get here as much as I can. This is just like going into the grocery store delis back home. The sweet tea was a little odd but hell, this ain’t the deep south. Nothing can be perfect I guess. Man. I am getting hungry just thinking about it. Too bad they close early. This is a lunch joint.

Welp Unilocal, What can I say about this hidden little GEM! I walked in and was immediately greeted by a gentleman, who quickly said I had the cutest baby…+++++. As I looked down the line of food to choose from, I was in heaven trying to decide what I will have for lunch. I settled on the special –Meatballs over white rice, cabbage, and Mac n cheese. It came with cornbread, plain or jalapeño. I choose plain. The restaurant was very clean and the entire staff was friendly. Even the other customers were friendly towards me. When I got back to my office to enjoy my lunch, mouth salivating from the anticipation of trying this delicious looking food. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that the meatballs had so much flavor and no gristle. Just yummy ball of meat, the rice was firm and loose. Perfect. The cabbage was cooked to perfection, and not over cooked. The mac-n-cheese was delicious, just enough cheese to keep your mouth wanting another bite. The noodles were cooked perfectly. I must even rave about the cornbread… sweet. This is my new place to eat at least once a week.

Recently attended a wedding reception that was catered by Josie’s Place and the food was awesome. One of the best hams I have ever tasted and wonderful lemon peppered chicken breasts. Catering certainly can’t be easy as to prepare food in one location and serve it hot in another does require pretty hard work. I know, I’ve done it. The crew that pulled this off did a great job and I was really surprised about the food quality. I had eaten catering by Josie’s at another even in Houston a few years back and remember the food to be surprisingly nice back then as well, just don’t remember where it was. Some people may call the food they serve«soul food» which basically means it’s good filling Southern style dinner.
