Simply Disappointing. Moved to Champions 3 months ago. Like going to a traditional barber. After reading some reviews and finding Unilocal reviews are hit or miss outside the loop I headed to Sammy’s. I walk in the door, brand new customer first time and he said, «What are you here for!?» Yes with a little bit of mustard on it. I found it a strange way to welcome a new client, but I said a haircut. He said I understand that, just most of my clients schedule ahead. If that is standard operating procedure, fine. Just say welcome, may I take your reservation for X time. Assume the sale, and welcome the new customer. That did not happen. He was kind enough to give me a better than average hair cut. So I thought I would try him again. I was unsure if I should go back. I could not understand if I was upset from the abrupt and standoffish attitude of Sparky(male barbers name) or not. So after some research, nothing else better was near. So what the heck. Called for a reservation. Said I would like a reservation for Thursday. He said«Who cut your hair last time?» I have no idea if certain guys work different days. Very common for busy shops to have various barbers and schdules. I said it was a gentelman, not sure his name. His response after laughing at me, «Well I am the only guy here so it was either me or a ghost.» Ok so we have established Sparky has poor customer service skills. Abrupt and offensive the first time. When I call as he requested for reservation he cracks a joke because I am not aware whom all might work at his barbershop. So I was 4 minutes late to my appointment. Maybe that is the reason the hair cut was sub par. But he took me back, cut my hair in at least half the time of the first cut. I am not one for small talk, so that is fine that he did not try to strike a conversation. As well I am all about quick. But after reviewing my hair cut it is the little things that he did not do this 2nd time. He did not take time in the cut. He did not pay attention to what he was doing. He did not measure as he performed the initial cuts. Usually the wet your hair down a bit. Put your hair between their fingers. Straighten it a bit, just to make sure the blend is performed correctly. This did not happen. Next he did not get my side burns done well. I did not want side burns. He said I guess you don’t want side burns because you don’t have any. Good guess Sparky. Would he should have done is even them up, and cut them back. He took a trim at them. But after getting home I realized he did not even fully cut both sides. Had to go back over it personally with my straight blade. That is the first time EVER I have had to redo a barbers work. It grows back, usually no issues. Lastly He did not trim my neck. Again I can not remember a time when a barber did not take the time to trim my neck with razor and foam. That is why I go to a barber. I don’t do sports clips, or fantastic sams. I go to a barber. But keeping in form with not paying attention to detail Sparky choose to to a half ass job on the side burns, the hair cut, and trimming my neck. I guess he did not do the job at all. Overall I am shocked his shop is still open. I think his father started it. He and his Sister run it. Whatever the story, he has a terrible customer service skills. His hair cut is sub par. But on the plus side he only Charges $ 15. I always give a $ 5 tip for bad hair cuts. For a good one I can easily double the price of the cut. A nice hair cut is one of the few things that can instantly make you feel like a new man. I am surprised with how many nice homes are in Champions that I can not find 2⁄3 solid barbers. I don’t want a fade, and I am not going to a place that does hair cuts and nails. I will keep searching as there has to be other options. Overall Sparky does a half ass job and does not pay attention to detail. The price is good, but you get what you pay for. O yeah, call for your Reservations please. Ask for Fran, she may give a decent cut.

Please ignore Google Maps. They got it wrong. Sammy’s is at Hollister &1960. Google sends you 1.3 miles down the road from Sammy’s. By Appointment, no sign in, no «Take a number» they are busy so ask for Fran.

Great haircut. Fast, done very well and at a very reasonable price. This will be the only place I get my hair cut from now on. Give them a shot… you will be pleased.

I just got back from my haircut at Sammy’s Barber Styling Shop, this being my 3rd or 4th visit with them. I lived out of state for a while and found a «guy» who could just cut my hair the way I didn’t even know I wanted it. When I moved back home to NW Houston, I couldn’t find a «guy.» But I lived close to Sammy’s barber shop going on 20 some odd years and never went to them until a couple of months ago after my continued dissatisfaction with other shops/salons in the area. I don’t feel compelled to write reviews often, if ever, but after today’s haircut I just couldn’t contain myself. To start with I am terrible at getting haircuts, I rarely know exactly what I want and when I do I can hardly explain it well enough. Each time I have gone to Sammy’s and had my cuts with Sparky he has been able to work some magic and had me leaving with a cut better than I could have expected. I mean I look maaaaaad fresh after a stop at Sammy’s. Usually after a haircut you’d expect«oh you did you get a haircut?» And for me that would be the end of the conversation. But since visiting Sammy’s its been more like, «hey did you get a haircut? Looks great!» Damn right it does. They are quick to fit you in if you call for an appointment and I’ve even gotten by on a walk-in, though to be courteous I suppose you should call. Cash only and Sparky will let you know why if you ask. If you’re looking for a local business to support this is the one. Been around for 30 years, great service all the way around, and they’ve got what I’m sure is another loyal customer among many.

Supporting local businesses is something I love to do. Especially if they earn my trust and my continued patronage. The crew at Sammy’s has received just that. I began going here in what I call«years BC(before children)». Not too long in the future, my first grandchild will get his first haircut here. Fran, her husband John(who has since retired due to health reasons) and her brother Sparky run this small hometown-like barber/styling shop. Fran would always do my «do» while John — now Sparky — took care of my «boys.» First hair cuts(including certificates with a lock of their hair) for my children, appointments on the fly, great talk, superb prices, excellent care: this is where to go. Reasonable prices kept me coming back, because when I was trooping in with my own crew of 5(two adults and 3 children), it could get extremely pricey to have all of our hair cut — but not at Sammy’s! We always get the cuts we want, and my sons, despite going to college in a different city, would always come back to Sparky for a cut. In fact, my youngest son(the only one still in college) will still call: «Mom, I’m coming home this weekend. Can you call Sparky and get me in on Saturday?» For a college kid to drive 350 miles not only to see his family but also to get a haircut, well — I know that he likes what he gets. And Sparky loves to talk sports, which is an added bonus! Me? Fran is just too good for words. She’ll continue to cut me until I’m completely covered with gray hair, and beyond. She does THAT good a job. Not a time goes by that I don’t leave there that I’m not stopped and told by a stranger, «Wow, I love your haircut.» You bet. So do I. See you in six weeks, Fran and Sparky!

I drive to the north side of Houston(1960 and Champions area) to have Sparky trim and shape my dome. Guy is great. I don’t trust just anyone with the«carpet» on this head. I love going in on the weekends, having a chat with my pal Sparky while he cuts and razors away. Great guy and great place. I’ve been going here for 15 years now. I will continue to go for as long as it’s around. Tell Sparky, Matt from Midtown sent you, might get a discount… but probably not. Support your local business. PS: He loves to talk Ohio State football
