Not only did their card machine not work so we had to scrounge up cash, they got our donuts wrong. We rarely go so for them to screw up my order on top of it really upsets me. I won’t be returning to this location. I would have taken it back but by the time I found the error we were 40 minutes away.

This is a Houston staple. I get donuts for my students often and this is their favorite. They are hot, full of sugar, and fast. Some locations have a drive through. You will often see regulars with the morning paper and a refillable cup of coffee. They also have a huge selection of jelly filled donuts. The price might be a little higher then some smaller non-chain places, but the quality and freshness is top notch.

To hell with Krispy Kreme — Shipley Do-nuts is local. Founded in Houston in 1936, it is a whole year older. Plus, Shipley developed his own recipe; he didn’t have to con some French chef in New Orleans into selling it to him. Shipley’s still has that old, kinda run-down bakery feeling, while Krispy Kreme might as well be Starbucks. Okay so maybe I have a thing for dives, but Shipley’s is also admittedly a nostalgic thing for me. Every Saturday at the crack of dawn, my mother would drag us out of bed to go garage sale-ing. Halfway through the morning, we’d grab a dozen for breakfast. It may not be the best donut in the world, but they’re tasty and lots of flavors are offered. I used to love the glazed twists, the glazed dipped in chocolate, the blueberry cake donuts, and my favorite — the Boston crème with its custard filling. Looking at their website, I see they’ve added kolaches. I wouldn’t expect these to be as good as you can get elsewhere, because that is not an item Shipley’s had when I was growing up.
