I’m giving 4 stars for the atmosphere and the bone marrow. If it was the bone marrow alone I’d say 5 stars. Ya, it’s that good. The pickled red onion and fennel on it I think really made the dish. However, apparently it’s veal so if you’re not into veal or at least need to know where your veal comes from(i.e.: not beef in a box) then don’t get it. It’s not labeled as veal and the only reason I found out was because the waitress mentioned she wasn’t really into veal… after I had already devoured my plate. I’m one of those who doesn’t eat veal, so sadly I won’t be having this again. But I digress. The wine was great, the service was good. My husband and I both got the scallops for dinner and both plates were too salty. It was edible but dang, lay off the salt guys! The portions were both very big on both the marrow and the scallops. We had 3 bones with the marrow(I shared with my husband) and 4 big scallops and a bunch of farro salad with the scallops dish. We took half of that home and half of the cake. The chocolate cake I got was pretty good but not divine. I’ll definitely try something else the next time we go.

If you need to brush up on your economics, this is the place to go. The suckling pig for two defines the law of diminishing marginal returns. This place is upscale, so the free valet is a pretty nice touch. I’m certain the valet wasn’t all too impressed with our Chevy Cruze after seeing a Ferrari parked out in the front, but we got to eat too. The atmosphere was a bit confusing. The décor screamed upscale, the cars out front screamed upscale, the menu prices screamed upscale, but the noise level inside just screamed. Maybe I haven’t been to enough upscale restaurants, but when I think upscale I do not associate it with bar like decibel levels. The kitchen seemed a tad bit slow, so in the meantime, we enjoyed the complimentary bread with an olive oil and cheese mix. The cubed pieces of bread were fluffy and delicious. I cannot say the same for the olive oil and cheese mix. The chunks of cheese provided a texture I was not ready for. Now I hope you’re ready for an economics lesson on diminishing marginal returns. The suckling pig was served on a bed of vegetables and potatoes. The first bite was to die for. The skin was so crispy yet it melted in my mouth. I wouldn’t say the meat itself was tough, but after 30 plus bites of any meat, your mouth is going to get a little sore. The first 10 bites were great, the next 10 were good, the following 10 were boring, and the last 10 bites were for the rest of our party.

Although nice since finding parking in the area can be pretty hard, the complimentary parking sure made me think that the restaurant itself was closed when I arrived — there was no cars outside and it was dimly lit inside. Good thing I actually went out from the car and finally saw that there were people eating inside. Tried the bone marrow for appetizer — it was good but the portion is tiny! For the main course, our party had the stuffed quail and suckling pig. For me, suckling pig was great, but some prefer the quail. The pig itself is good for 4 people although the menu said it was for 2 — totally worth the price! Crispy skin and moist meat, although it was a bit bland.

I wanted to like Stella Sola more than I did. Décor: Interesting touches. I get what they’re trying to do, a lounge with some Texas touches. I liked it. The ambiance was nice and not overly pretentious. Service: No complaints. Our server was a bit indifferent at first but overall service was efficient. Food: We ordered a meat plate as an appetizer. My girlfriend ordered bucatini pasta with guanciale and mushrooms. I ordered a flat-iron grilled Wagyu steak with cornbread gnocchi. The pasta was cooked perfectly, a little bit al dente. The issue was that the sauce-to-pasta ratio was off… we needed more noodles. Both our dishes had a very liberal amount of red chilies in it and it honestly overwhelmed the other flavors. I’m all about spicy but in this case the balance of the meal was thrown off. We ordered desert even though we were pretty full, just to get that burning taste out of our mouths. Flourless chocolate cake was pretty good and the accompanying honey gelato was perfect. I liked this place well enough but I’m not rushing for a repeat visit.

This review is strictly for their brunch. My 3rd oldest bookmark was finally visited. My gf and I came in for their Sunday Brunch. They offer valet parking or if you want there is plenty of street parking just a block behind it. Once you enter the décor is great. It’s very upscale TEXAN, meaning lots of blacks, oranges, and copper, even longhorn skulls. They have LOTS of windows so very bright natural lighting. Once seated we were told about the $ 3 brunch drinks. I had a bloody mary and my gf had the bellini. Not the best bloody mary I’ve ever had but for 3 bucks you can’t beat the deal. My gf enjoyed her bellini. We also shared an order of their deviled eggs. Yummy, a bit expensive, 6 for 6. As far as our entrees, my gf had a sandwich, it had an egg on pretzel bread?, delicious! I had the eggs benedict, came with turkey, the hollandaise sauce was lighter than I’m used to which was a good thing. The service was spectacular. My water glass never reached below 1⁄3 empty.

My wife and came here for Sunday brunch. The free valet in the front is a nice touch. We weren’t sure what to expect because we couldn’t find a brunch menu online. Apparently, the menu changes frequently, adjusting to local, seasonal foods. It was sparsely populated at 2:15pm, but I’m not sure why given our lovely experience here… The«Big Texas Cinnamon roll» is enormous(see the photo I uploaded), but so tasty! It’s not too sweet, but has a nice fluffy texture. The frosting was almost as light as whipped cream with vanilla bean flecks and orange zest sprinkled on top. Next, the housemade potato gnocchi was to die for — so tender and fluffy — served in a perfectly matched(wine?) sauce, smoked Guinea hen, sweet hot peppers, and cherry tomatoes. The spaghetti was also homemade and topped with a thick chunky tomato sauce and giant flavorfully-seasoned meatballs. We will definitely return to try their dinner menu. Heavenly!

Finally! A Bryan Caswell restaurant I really like! Using Houston Restaurant Week 2011 as an excuse, I finally tried Stella Sola. Complimentary valet. Great entrance, pretty restaurant, I really liked sitting by the kitchen cause we could watch the food come out and see how hard working everyone was. There’s also a private wine room that looks like it’d be great for a(small) party! Service is kinda slow, but we were well entertained. Wine list is good, specialty cocktails are interesting(and strong). Food is recommended! Appetizers LOVELOVELOVE bone marrow. Makes me miss Catalan. Highly recommend. Small portion but done very well. Pappardelle — good but didn’t meet our standards(see Trattoria Lisina in Wimberly) oh and beware of the red peppers! Entrees Pork Loin — huge hunk o pig! Comes with a smoked corn sauce — very smokey, very good Personally I preferred the stuffed quail. As others have said, it’s a lot of stuffing with strong flavors. So just don’t eat all the stuffing! The quail itself is good with the stuffing, if you just keep the ratio 1:1. Also, the greens with cherry tomatoes and onions were really tasty on the side Dessert Pistacio pound cake — yum, who knew? Affogato — uhhh, huuuuge cup. I expected something small but it came in like a soda pop glass. The salted caramel gelato was delicious. The candied nuts kept getting stuck in my teeth, but worth it. This is what will put your meal over the edge. In conclusion, I’ll be back for more!

Second stop on the Houston Restaurant Weeks tour! And WELL worth it! The restaurant is an open concept design with touches of Tuscany and Texas all mixed into one! It is a bustling eatery so if you are looking for a quiet dinner this isn’t your bag, but that shouldn’t deter you! We had reservations at 7:30 and it was already filling up… on a Tuesday! Again, we were there for Houston Restaurant Weeks, so we had a special menu laid out. I tried the roasted bone marrow appetizer and we also had the Caesar salad with a fried egg. Both good, and both a little different. I had never had roasted bone marrow, but it was deliciously decadent! So rich and buttery… I would recommend this to anyone! The salad was a little boring, nothing special except for of course the fried egg I suppose. We then ordered the Berkshire pork loin and the wild mushroom risotto. I am not a fan of mushrooms, but I did try a bite and it was very creamy and rich. The pork loin was great with a little kick from the chilis! Our dessert was the pistachio pound cake with mascarpone ice cream. We also tried the caramel turtle affogato! What is this you ask??? HEAVEN is what it was! Its salted caramel gelato with candied pecans and espresso chocolate! It was nice that they offered a wine pairings menu too, which we opted for! Great way to dabble in three different wines! They do have a fantastic wine list and reasonably priced! They have a great specialty cocktail list as well. Again, great restaurant Weeks menu, and after spying on the regular menu as well… I have to go back! The service was great considering it was very busy! The waiter was very helpful in our choices and wine questions. He also made some great recommendations. Parking is not an issue; they have a great valet service! I do have one small complaint, but not about the restaurant. When I go to an upscale place and intend on spedning some good money on great food, I do not want to see you(other patrons) in jean shorts, or t-shirts, or your workout clothes… for real. Come on people, step it up a notch!

My girlfriends and I came here for dinner for Houston Restaurant Week and found it to be a nice, chill environment to have girls catch up. It was a bit distracting since our tables were located near the kitchen and where the waiters and servers kept walking up and down. It was hard to focus on each other’s conversations. Anyways here’s the downlow of what I ordered and tried from my girlfriend’s plates: Appetizer: I’ve never had bone marrow before but now I can say that I have. It was interesting. I would however recommend the pappardelle! It’s a bit spicy though for those of you who can’t take spices very well. Roasted Bone Marrow Marinated fennel, pickled shallot, ciabatta Pappardelle Suckling pig and wild mushroon sugo, arugula, caperberry, honey Entrée: Didn’t get to try the other entrees but the pork loin was pretty tender and just ok. Berkshire Pork Loin Napa cabbage, fava, chiles, pickled apple, smoked corn Dessert: Please get the Caramel Turtle Affogato! I tried the others and they’re not as good compared to the gelato! You won’t regret it, I did when I ordered the pound cake and my girlfriend got the gelato. Caramel Turtle Affogato Sauteed caramel gelato, espresso chocolate, candied pecans Pistachio Pound Cake Sweetened mascarpone, sour cherries, grappa Honey & Vanilla Panna Cotta Saba, blueberry«panzanella» Last thoughts are that we got asked to leave our table to move to another one(at the bar or outside) — it was understandable that they have reservations but I’ve never been asked by a restaurant to «move to another table.» It was already buzz kill for continuing our conversation when we were asked to move. Also I’ve never gotten bit by mosquitos in restaurants before but I was attacked 4x dining here. It wasn’t a very pleasant experience. :/

Eh… looks like I’m better off sticking to Little Bigs. Came here for a birthday dinner and the food was good but probably priced more than it’s worth. It was my first time trying bone marrow and it was tasty but a small portion for the price. For my entrée, I got the taglierini alla chitarra(pasta with blue crab carbonara, peppers, and pancetta) and it was good but nothing impressive. We shared one of the desserts and again, nothing great… I felt like it was something I could’ve gotten at 59 diner(harsh but true). People are describing the décor as «Texas Trendy» but I didn’t really dig it, it just looked like someone ruined the sleek décor by tossing a few steer skulls up on the wall.

My husband and I went to Stella Sola to celebrate our anniversary as we are fans of Reef but wanted to try something new. I have to admit, I wasn’t overly excited by much on the online menu but I hoped the day’s menu would have something to offer me… To me, the bread was simply okay and the olive oil-cheese combo created a strange texture I didn’t care for. Combined with little flavor, it was unnecessary to me. We each ordered a different martini; I had one with pineapple juice and sage and it had just the right amount of sweetness. We shared the touted bone marrow, husband liked it, but it wasn’t for me. For the pasta course, I went with the peppardelle with pork. The pork was savory, the greens were nice, and I enjoyed the pickled okra. My husband had a dish with seafood, which was his favorite part of the evening. I chose the wagyu beef. It was a generous portion and I loved the cornbread gnocchi hidden beneath it. My husband had the scallops with pork belly. Both were good, but they didn’t really go together. I felt the dessert menu left a lot to be desired. I love sweets, but I went so far as to call my husband’s vanilla cake with chocolate crema and ancho gelato«gross.» I ordered the salted caramel gelato with the espresso sauce that other reviewers have mentioned. It was good, but huge and a little one note. The service was so-so. A runner brought us our entrees before pasta and was quickly stopped by our waiter. I was surprised not to be wished happy anniversary by the host or waiter as we had specified the occasion on our reservation. My husband’s glass sat empty for a course and a half until he was asked if he wanted another. If I were invited to Stella Sola at someone else’s request, I would likely go. However, it is not high on my personal list to get back to anytime soon.

After a fabulous UYE brunch hosted by none other than Ms. Anna W., I was excited to try Stella Sola for dinner. If a restaurant manages to make brunch food memorable, they are due for another visit. There were five of us eating that night. I called in advance to specifically request Kelly as our waiter. He was amazingly stellar at brunch to the point that if he hadn’t been working, I might have postponed my visit. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. If he doesn’t know the answer to a question, he will tell you so and find out. He gets an A+ in my book. As an appetizer, we ordered the charcuterie plate. This was actually my favorite portion of dinner. The meat popped with good flavor. It was clearly cut and prepared by someone who knew what they were doing. Since I was a child living in Florida, grouper has been one of my favorite fish. In fact, when I was in the Aquarium a few years ago and saw a grouper the size of a wall, I salivated and wondered how many meals I could get from it. I ordered the roasted Gulf grouper which was prepared well, but I wasn’t wowed. I gauged similar impressions from the rest of the party as they commented on their dishes. For dessert, Kelly suggested something resembling doughnut holes with risotto. I could appreciate what they were trying to do, but ultimately the flavors were not balanced. Overall, I would give Stella Sola’s food a 3.5, but, with amazing service and great company, I’m bumping it to a 4. I definitely prefer it to Reef which leads me to another review. ;)

What is it about Bryan Caswell and Unilocal reviews? Houston’s A-list celebrity chef manages to garner only B– ratings on his Houston restos. For Reef, I’m flabbergasted. It’s currently trending at 4 stars, but has been in the yellow-orange 3.5 star arena for most of its shelf life. The ambiance is exceptionally loud, but the food at Reef is so good it makes my Big 3 Fancy Pants list( ). It’s a strong recommend for me( ). However, I agree with the bourgeoisie when it comes to rating Little Big’s(meh), and I had a very similar experience with Chef Caswell’s Tuscan/Texan fusion, Stella Sola. The décor of Stella Sola is, like Reef, stellar. The space is lavished in a creamy white that dimly brightens up the room, and the glass-enclosed wine cellar is a marvel to view. But if the primary complaint about Reef is that it’s too loud, then my personal beef with Stella Sola is that the chairs are too uncomfortable. It’s a small quibble, admittedly. We got off on slightly the wrong foot with our waiter. We were looking for a wine suggestion, and our waiter cum wine connoisseur kept recommending bottles that sat far outside our price range. Upon bringing him down to earth a little bit, we were met with a bit of a snooty attitude that lasted through appetizers. He ended up with a passing grade, and was especially helpful and friendly to us at the end of the night. It was a birthday celebration, and we had brought our own cake. Said waiter enjoyed helping us with making the birthday special. Hit-and-miss waiter service and non-ergonomic chairs can be forgiven if the food is fantastic. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case here. For appetizers, we picked the Wood Roasted Mussels that sounded appealing, cooked with tomatoes and Lone Star beer, and covered in salsa verde. Writing that makes me drool, but thinking of how it actually tasted just makes me disappointed. Honestly, Carabba’s garlic-butter mussels are far superior, and it hurts me to say that. We also got a pizza, but I can’t remember the toppings. I think it tasted fine. For the main course, we opted for a couple of pasta dishes, the Taglierini alla chitarra with blue crab carbonara, and a tomato-based long noodle arrabiata that’s not listed on the online menu, so I can’t tell you the name. Our compatriots picked the suckling pig for two, and now’s a good time to inform you that Stella Sola fancies itself as a Tuscan charcuterie of sorts. Thus, they have an irrational love of all things pork. What this also means is that salt is a huge part of their dishes, and it permeates every bite. Too much so, in fact. The arrabiata was good, not quite tomato-y enough, and overly salty. The carbonara was ok, a little too creamy, and overly salty. The suckling pig was enjoyed as well, but if I had the bet, I’d say the skin was drenched in a salt rub. The self-brought cake was very good, as was the eventual wine we settled on. While Texan-Tuscan sounded like a good idea in theory, I’m just don’t think Stella Sola pulled it off. Sorry, Mr. Caswell, but I’ll stick with Reef.

My hubby and I stopped by Stella Sola on a Saturday night at 9pm. The only tables available were the lounge area and the patio. We took the patio because the Houston weather was actually nice that night(although windy… one couples cash blew into the street.) I think outside was a lot nicer due to the noise inside. Boy it was loud… or perhaps my hubby and I dont go out to eat on Saturday nights anymore and I forgot how busy restaurants get. The service was awesome. Too bad I forgot my waiters name. However, he convinced us to do three courses. Stella Sola is Texan Tuscan food… their menu changes daily based on what they purchase that money. However, they do have a menu online and the menu that night was very similar. He said we can take the menu home with us for a souvenir if we wanted… little did he know I needed it to write my review. =D First, we started off with Fritto Misto and Roasted bone marrow. Although my husband almost convinced me not to get it because he said all it is is fried calamari. The description states«rock shrimp & squid, picked chile, meyer lemon and basil.» The waiter said they fry everything so you can eat the lemon. The lemon was not good. However, I thought the shrimp and squid were very flavorful. I loved it with the pickled«salad»… pickled cabbage, jalapenos, onions… Actually, I think the pickled«salad» was suppose to accompany the bone marrow, but it tasted great with the fried shrimp and squid. The bone marrow was a little bit of a disappointment. I’m not an expert on bone marrow but this was probably my third time experimenting it and I believe the other places were more flavorful. It was a bit on the bland side. My hubby felt it didnt spread as smoothly on the ciabatta. For the second course, we shared the Taglierini alla chitarra: blue crab carbonara, peppers, and pancetta. The photo on the website made it look so yummy. Again, I was a bit disappointed. I felt it had a lot of bacon which overpowered the crab. For our last course, I ordered the Sea scallops alla plancha with roasted pork belly, cauliflower purée, and hazelnut brown butter… this dish was a bit rich for my taste. The scallop was salty and the pork belly was salted. It just seemed like a very salty dish. My husband ordered the Grilled Texas quail stuffed with braised suckling pig and roasted salsify salad. His dish was kind of the opposite of mine. It was good, but I don’t think it had that«wow» factor. Overall, the food was good, but not good enough for me to have the urge to come back. We really need to start dining with other people so we can try more dishes. We were so stuffed we couldnt finish our entrée nor grab dessert.

We went here for a date night and was pleasantly welcomed to a cozy, intimate atmosphere of beautiful and interesting décor and great service. After looking at pictures on their website, I had my eyes set on the Wood Roasted Mussels. They were fun to eat and tasted delicious! The salsa verde that the mussels were cooked in had a light yet flavorful taste(not heavy on the butter). I couldn’t help myself. I dipped all my mussels and toast into it! When we found out that you could get Suckling Pig for Two at Stella Sola, that was the selling point for us! So we just HAD to order it for dinner. Maybe it was naïve of me to think, but I thought that we were going to get a whole roasted little pig, head-to-tail, for our entrée. I was a little disappointed that in actuality it’s a portion of a big suckling pig to feed two people.(And really, it was a HUGE portion, we only ate ½ and took the rest home!) My disappointment quickly disappeared the second we cut into it and had a piece of the juicy pork and crunchy skin. The taste of pure savory pork and its fatty goodness in this dish was wonderful. Fair warning from Emily C. that it’s not a light meal, lol. We topped off our experience with their most popular dessert. I couldn’t find the exact name of it on the website but it’s the top one on their dessert list. Here’s my attempt to describe it — caramel gelato with a hint of sea salt mixed with candied pecans. Did I mention at table side they DRIZZLED warm espresso chocolate over this mouth-watering dessert? Loved everything I had!

Came for Anna W.‘s UYE(which was awesome!), and the service was fantastic. Our waiter handled everything perfectly and got us all our food at the same time. I got the Toad in the Hole, one of their brunch specialties– brioche with ham, cheese, oozing egg, mushroom with a side arugula salad. Can’t speak for anyone else, but I thought mine was kind of bland. Runny egg was good, but too much bread, not enough mushroom and meat. The arugula salad was all salt-n-peppa’ed up, making it super difficult to finish. But there were dishes that other people ordered that looked really good. Definitely willing to give this place a second shot, especially with the cute location in the Heights.

Stella Sola is one very chic place. They have a lovely patio and beautiful inside décor. But the atmosphere is very laid back. It’s not a place where you go to see and be seen but you meet up with good friends for food and a laugh. I came here for Anna W.‘s amazing UYE Brunch. I can’t speak much on the food but it all looked delicious! Our server, Kelly, was really nice and very patient with our rowdy bunch of Unilocalers. He kindly offered some suggestions and calmly answered our questions. I opted for the potatoes & peppers which were yummy and flavorful. But my main entrée was two mimosas and a bloody mary. The mimosas didn’t knock my socks off but the Bloody Marys were very good! I will definitely be back here again with my family except I’ll try to leave sober the next time.
Went there over the weekend. Here’s the deal. Terrific food. Terrible desserts. Average tooti-frutti drinks. Amazing gnocchi and seafood tagliolini –even with sea urchin in it which i hate but couldn’t really taste. the wagyu ribeye was off the freakin’ hook amazing. the meat was cured 55 days before serving so it was like pastrami flavored tenderloin. unbelievable. one of the best pieces of beef i ever had. if u like amaretto, mascarpone, etc. you’ll love the desserts, too. me, i can’t stand those types of desserts. i’ll take a crème brûlée or zabaglione any day. they couldn’t even do vanilla ice cream w/hot fudge so i tried the pistachio cake. not a fan of pistachio but it was okay. overall, go for the food. avoid the drinks and go home for dessert.

It’s always a good sign when your reservation choices are 5pm or 9pm on a Saturday night. We, of course, opted for the latter reservation and had a late lunch to tide us over until the evening. The forced valet is annoying, but at least it is complimentary. We were seated in a back room surrounded by wine cases, it was lovely. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered the gulf crab bugatoni on her recommendation and I was not let down. There were large lumps of crab and the pasta was perfectly cooked. I had seen the earlier tweet for the grouper, so I had that for my entrée. Amazing. The grouper was so fresh. The highlight of the meal had to be the suckling pig. The two men in our group ordered it to share(it is served for a minimum of two) so I was lucky enough to sample some. The crispy skin was unlike anything I have ever eaten. Melt in your mouth delicious. They polished off the entire massive hunk of meat, it was that good. As we are driving away, my husband asks«so when are we going back for more of that pig?» I wish there were more non-nut(I have an allergy) dessert options, but the turtle sundae shared by our dining companions looked divine, not a morsel was left. The wine was nicely priced and expertly presented.
