Ghetto American Chinese has a new name and his name is Timmy Chan.(#1) I’m never enthusiastic when it comes to Chinese takeout. At the request of local friends, we made our way to the one and only original location of the now infamous Timmy Chan franchise. Any spot along Martin Luther King Blvd is destined for a hell of an experience and I was intrigued as I’ve never been to this area of town. From the outside, Timmy Chan’s seemed like a place unchanged from the harsh realities of time. The nostalgic 70s look of a sign, complete with the«orient» font that is so well known in Americanized establishments throughout Chinese America, with nothing else, not even characters to distinguish itself further. This Timmy Chan was all business. But this is MLK Blvd we’re talking about, so it was fitting to see Timmy Chan’s had prepped themselves quite nicely. There were horizontal bars outlining every window, as if it were some kind of(fast food) jail. Our group decided it was best to go via the drive thru, since no one was willing to step inside. Then we approach the window … … and it’s bullet proof. Like no bullet is going through the glass it’s bullet proof. It’s also the kind of window you see at a bank when attempting to exchange funds where hands couldn’t touch if they wanted to. I’ve never seen anything like it. After a few orders of various cash only combo dishes, we were off. The odors of their fried chicken wings permeated the car till we headed elsewhere to enjoy it. As we unleashed every container on our outdoor picnic table, I could see where the guilty pleasure of general tso’s, chicken + shrimp fried rice, fried honey chicken wings, and spring rolls playing a nostalgic role for anyone who grew up here. There was no selling point in the food. It was mostly bland, unmemorable, yet strangely appetizing, though that might’ve been the MSG talking. It is reminiscent of other greasy spoons in the Chino-Americana landscape, with the kind of Texan portions that would leave all parties well fed. I certainly won’t dismiss the Timmy Chan bandwagon over the food, it’s clearly the reputation that has allowed it stay in one piece after all of these years. Next time, I’m going inside. ___________ (#1) Not to be confused with Timmy Chang, QB Extraordinaire.

I’m trying this place for the first time. The first thing I noticed was that they ONLY accept cash, luckily I had about 8 dollars in my wallet, the service was good. I ended up getting the shrimp fry rice. I was goin to eat there but I did not like the tables and they looked uncomfortable. So I recommend buying the food and leaving. The food tasted average nothing fancy but it’s good not too greasy.

This has to be the best(cleanest) Timmy chans of them all. I live closer to the one on Scott, but this by far is the best. I’ve been several times to the one on Lockwood aswell. The wings and rice are always fresh at this location. I highly recommend this place to anyone.
