The UPS Store

I understand the poor reviews. Customer service is lacking. I called ahead to make sure a notary would be available. I arrived an hour after said time, no notary. Then ended up paying for a box and «packaging» for something I didn’t need to. The latter is my fault for relying on her 2 word answers and not asking enough follow up questions. I hate wasting time!

Not sure why the low ratings/​negative reviews. I’ve used this location recently and the staff was very helpful. Chantel (sp?) and Mr. Babu (sp?) went above and beyond to help me with a shipping issue where other stores wouldn’t. It’s a bit out of my way, but the customer service treatment I received is enough to travel a few extra miles.

I used to like this location despite the fact that the employees are impossible to understand. There is never a long line and it’s easy to get in and out of.
But recently this location has implemented a new policy, charging $ 1 per piece of tape used. This is ridiculous and I consider it extortion. The reason they give is that UPS does not provide the store with tape so they have to supply their own. To me this is an ordinary business expense that can be a tax write if at the end of the year. Now they expect the customer as well as the government to pay for this tape. I’m sure some people will fall for this crock but not me.

I’ve utilized this location for over five years and never once had a problem. I suppose I don’t go in expecting the royal treatment.
The line has never been «almost out the door». Yes there may be people in front of you during peak times; but the employees always assisted each person to make sure their needs were met.
This is a franchise store. Not owned by corporate UPS; they make their money off mail box services and additional supplies. Of course there will be a markup for convenience. Same thing happens when you purchase goods at a CVS vs going to Target.
This location is perfect, a few streets south of the galleria with plenty of parking.

Too expensive. Staff isn’t knowledgeable whatsoever. Too expensive. They don’t seem to understand the most basic of instructions. Did I mention it’s too expensive? My friend had forgot her makeup bag when she went out of town. I took it to the UPS store to ship it to her. I’m in Houston, TX. She was in Vegas. The makeup bag was just a few pounds, maybe 3. They tried to charge me $ 80 to ship it to her. That was AFTER the initial price they gave me of $ 130! She can buy a whole new makeup case with $ 130. Absolute rip-​off.

Cliffs Notes: After relocating to Houston, I chose this UPS Store for my mailbox rental because it was closest to where I worked. I have used UPS Stores all over the country (I think this is my 8^th different rental or so?) since I travel so much for work and value the mail/​package receiving and forwarding services. Unfortunately this location (UPS Store #1719) is the first truly negative experience I have had with a mailbox rental, and I strongly advise not to rent here.
The Details: First off, I get mail addressed to other mailboxes multiple times a week. I also get tons of mail intended for prior renters of my mailbox number. When I give store staff prior renter mail, they just throw it in the garbage. They don’t even shred it. This is especially galling given my understanding is they’re supposed to notify the USPS, which is what past UPS Stores I rented at did when this happened.
Second, so far I’ve failed to receive probably 20+ mailings I was expecting. This includes financial statements, and once it was even a credit card. Given the prior complaint, it’s not surprising — they probably put them in other people’s mailboxes and they just didn’t get back to me. Who knows where all that mail is now? And what about mail I wasn’t expecting that I just don’t know about? I fear every time I check my credit report.
Third, staff is unprofessional. I’ll just give the worst example: once, an employee got agitated waiting for me to sign package slips (they print out a slip for every package, so when I pick up multiple packages, I sign each to indicate I received each one). She insisted that I just sign one slip and then she just stapled them all together. Well, we know where this story is going, right? A few weeks later, she couldn’t find a package I had a slip for and so she insisted I had already picked it up and just not signed for it. Her reckless accusation left me speechless — this whole thing was her idea, not mine! Naturally, the package was for a very expensive electronic item. The package was eventually found but only after multiple complaints.
Finally, this location is severely understaffed. This is compounded by them often not prioritizing mailbox customers (who typically only need 15 – 30 seconds to be served) over customers trying to ship packages. I’ve seen lines of customers almost out the door here, and I’ll just have to leave because I don’t have time to wait 15+ mins to pick up a package. In their defense, they have gotten a bit better about this over the past couple months, but it’s still a problem sometimes.
Apologies for the super long review but I feel that this information has to be out there so future potential renters don’t make the same mistake I did. Complaints to corporate result in apologies but since the locations are franchised to independent owners, corporate can only register complaints with the owner. So we have to do the only thing we can do: take our business elsewhere.

Like Cass, I ended up paying almost as much to return a pair of shoes than I bought it for. I had never used UPS to return anything, as usually online stores have free returns or you can return to brick and mortar.
My $ 25 Marc Ecko shoes cost $ 18 to ship back. I was confused on what the pricing models were as there was no hand out listing the prices. Also I got charged a few dollars to purchase a return box and have it sealed. I should have found an empty box myself.
I’m not sure of the standard rate to ship items but they were just a pair of shoes, not textbooks or anything heavy!

Paying out the bum for packing materials! I nearly paid as much to have my item packed as shipped. I didn’t have any problems with the customer service here; it’s really more the price for packing I take issue with! Also the fact that they close so early (which is standard at any UPS) is a real pain in the ass.

In a word, this place is horrible. I have attempted to ship several packages before work at this location and each time, I have either had to wait in a huge line OR the center failed to open on time. This morning, I wanted to send a malfunctioning receiver back to ATT and at 8:50am, there was no staff inside the store and the door was locked. What’s the problem, you say? Well, the store was scheduled to open at 8:30 am. I’m sure I’m not the only person to have been inconvenienced by the tardy staff, considering that there are post office boxes inside the store, as well. (They lock the front door and make those boxes inaccessible before and after store hours)
I wouldn’t be so harsh in my review if this was a «one-​off situation». Unfortunately, this is my third time dealing with their inattentive, slow, LATE staff. I tried calling UPS Store customer care and they said they’d forward a note about the situation to the owner of the store. YEAH. With that said, if you have a schedule to keep, don’t bother going here early in the morning.
