UT Housing

I have never encountered as rude customer service in any other professional setting. I had an incident one weekend in which my old, brittle apartment key (of which we’re allowed ZERO spares on move-​in) chipped off on the very end. This made it impossible for me to get into my apartment (I had to call UTPD) and impossible for me to lock the apartment when I had to leave for work (maintenance could not offer any help). On Monday, when I visited the leasing office to ask for a spare key, I was told that it was the torque I was using when unlocking doors (something I’ve been doing problem free for my entire life) that caused the metal key to chip. The staff insisted I pay $ 50 to replace the key. It was only because I stood up for myself and refused to pay such an exorbitant fee that they finally gave in. I received NO apologies for the inconvenience or the risk myself and my belongings had been in all weekend with me being unable to lock the apartment. Absolutely ridiculous.
It is beyond my understanding why people with such little care or concern for others, especially students, would work in such positions. I would rather pay $ 100 more a month in rent if it would mean that we could hire kind people to work in the front office. I should not have been treated like a miscreant for a failure on the part of their brittle keys.

The location is great, the price is nice considering how high rent has gotten in the area, and while I expect much less than most students here because I grew up in much worse areas, I absolutely have to post this just to let you know about the front office staff.
The moment you walk through the door or talk on the telephone, regardless of how hard you try to go in smiling and with a positive tone, they will be rude to you like no one has ever been rude to you before. They speak to professional students and professionals like they’re dumber than 6^th graders. They automatically take the tone that they owe you absolutely nothing and that you are in their way, on their last nerve, and not worth their time. I have been yelled at by someone in their office. They’ve been extremely condescending. It’s like they think that because they’re the cheapest thing available, they don’t have to try to be nice to their tenants.
There’s very little that the tenants do that makes this an extra difficult job– everyone is in grad school or post-​grad schcool, the complex is extremely quiet and well-​behaved, with hardly any poor behavior happening on complex grounds.
It makes no sense why they hate us before they even know what our reason for walking in is, but it appears that that does not matter. For a job based on customer service, it seems like they absolutely hate the fact that they have to deal with customers.

No stars for this place, honestly. I had the worst experience ever. The staff is so bad. They stole my deposit and even blatantly lied to my face. They take every opportunity to take away money from students. They are not at all helpful and they have no manners. They don’t know how to speak to students and are very very rude. I lost all my deposit because of their fault and all I feel like doing is abusing them. Apartment was filled with cockroaches and they did nothing about that. I would not recommend this place to any human. It’s not worth the low rent. This place and the staff sucks !!! Worst place ever!!!

Rent WAS low till year 2012. Then each year it has increased so much that I ended up paying almost same as other apartments around.
There is a lot of water stagnated so that mosquitoes is a big problem. Bugs and roaches in houses. Ancient A/​C units make it really energy inefficient.
Would I recommend? I guess may be. if you dont have vehicle then shuttle service makes it easier. Rec center is awesome. But beware of crappiest admonistrative staff… but otherwise probably not.

I’ve lived here for two years now. I believe this is quite an honest review:
UT Housing has the new housing (built post 2000s) and old housing (built in the 1980s) where I’m at. The actual floor plans are roomy and nice. The built in furniture in the kitchen is not the greatest. It will fall apart while you live here (as long as you will stay here a min of 1 year). You most likely will experience bugs at some point in your stay. You will have huge water pools in the parking lots because of poor drainage during heavy rain. You will have lots of babies crying at other times because there are lots of families here with newborns/​toddlers/​infants.
How is rent? Pretty okay. I live in a two bedroom (with a roomie) and I end up paying 385/​month. Compared to other locations nearby, is it worth it? No, not really. Maybe I save 50 bucks, but… trust me. I can’t do laundry at my place. There’s a laundromat in the facility where you can wash/​dry for 75 cents each, but I’m not a big fan. They’re okay, not great.
The good part: large floorplans in old housing. You’re on the bus route for the UT Schools, you’re also on the bus route for Metro 87, You’re close to shady Kroger, the Rec is nearby, and you can always house friends’ cars during Reliant season. That’s it.
The staff is not the best. The only staff I enjoy talking to is the check-​in lady who’s very nice! The actual staff are really not there to serve you. I’m not sure what their actual goal is in their job description. Anything you ever bring up to them is quite the inconvenience.
In conclusion, I would not recommend living here.

I have enjoyed living here for the past year. The complex is right next door to the Rec Center, and it is right on the UT-​Houston shuttle stop. The neighbors are nice too — the place is exclusive to Med Center people. The complex is relatively safe — there is a ²⁴⁄₇ guard station, and UT Police patrols the complex everyday. While the management can be snobby at times, my maintenance requests have been handled promptly. I highly recommend this place to prospective UT students! The wait list is long though, so be sure to apply early.

Comparing with the apartments around the neighborhood, the rent is not very cheap. But the service is so bad that it’s not worth that price. The office staff is very rude. She doesn’t care if you’re living or dead!!!
Why am I saying this? One day the A/​C in my apartment was down during summer time! When I reported to the office on Friday, the staff said they would come to fix it on Monday, cos they didn’t offer maintenance on weekends. Well, ok. That makes sense. After suffering the summer heat for 2 days. On Monday, I asked her again when the maintenance would come. The staff said A/​C was not an emergency. I had to wait for 3 days!!! What? Last time you promised it would be fixed on Monday, then you told me to wait longer? If I got heatstroke because of your unreliable answer, who’s gonna be responsible for that? Her attitude is very rude and impolite. All she said was «official answers», like a tape recording. All she wants was to kick you out of her sight and didn’t give the office any trouble.

While rent is cheap, you have to be a student or employee of it to live here. The downside to this is the amazinly poor service and attitudes of the office staff. They do not know how to treat people and when confronted with an issue will not hesitate to throw you out of the office so they do not have to deal with you. If you hate your job that much go find something else to do, I hear mcdonalds is hiring…
