Our experience with Kate was absolutely amazing! We knew from day one of our pregnancy that we wanted a home-birth experience. Kate was excellent at answering our questions and giving us some really great information throughout the pregnancy. We never felt rushed during appointments and had plenty of opportunity to express any concerns. She was excellent at sharing information with us in an un-biased way and respecting any decisions we made. We never felt pressured to do anything we weren’t comfortable with. After our son was born I was impressed with how thorough she was with mom and baby. Never invasive, just on the ball making sure everyone was okay after the birth. She even somehow found time to make my wife a cup of herbal tea which was heaven for her after delivery. I could go on and on. Bottom line is that Kate has a burning passion for what she does and it shows. She even gave my wife a massage on a followup home visit after the birth. Who does that?!? She also has a great sense of humor and many times during our appointments we’d end up laughing like crazy which helped ease any pregnancy jitters. She has a very holistic approach to pregnancy, labor and birth which aligns with us perfectly. I’m sorry Rebecca E. had a bad experience. However as she mentioned in her review if you agree to pay a deposit there’s no reason to expect a refund of any kind. Lashing out on Unilocal certainly doesn’t help anyone. Regarding the nurse midwife comment, I’m confident Kate could go that direction if she wanted. However her more holistic methods would clash with how nurse midwifes approach care. We had experience with nurse midwifes before Kate and didn’t like their overly invasive ideas. I whole-heartily agree with doing your research and finding a birth option that’s the right fit for you and your family. With that said, I can’t tell you if Kate is the right fit for you or not, only you can decide. I can tell you this though; my wife and I already talked about it and when number two is on the way we’ll be calling Kate again!

Our experience was not a great one. We met her once for our first visit, and she had two interns with her. When we asked Kate questions, she didn’t seem to know enough to answer them. It made us nervous. One of her interns was very knowledgeable and answered some of them well, and when that happened, Kate seemed annoyed with her. It was awkward. Maybe I just didn’t understand their dynamic, but honestly I would’ve felt more comfortable if we were working only with her intern(she was pregnant and due around the same time as me, so we couldn’t go that route). I was so excited about the last part of the visit(where you get to hear the baby’s heartbeat), I went ahead and signed the contract and paid her $ 300 deposit fee for her services. A week later, after my husband and I had thought about it and were sure we weren’t comfortable enough with her to leave our birth in her hands, we called her to cancel. I asked if we could get any of the deposit back, and she said that we couldn’t because she was holding the time around our due date and couldn’t take other patients. I’m SURE she didn’t have to turn away a ton of potential patients in that week we were deciding. I suppose it was my fault in the end for not thinking over everything before we paid the deposit fee — but I’m still disappointed that she couldn’t refund us anything at all. It made me wonder how much she makes on people like us every year who decide to go with someone else. We ended up going to a nurse midwife that we felt knew a lot more and could answer our questions thoroughly. One thought kept coming to mind during my interview with Kate — if she really wants licensing requirements in place for midwives in MIchigan so that she can gain credibility… why doesn’t she just go to school to be a nurse midwife? Side note — we also found her to be really opinionated on things like circumcision. If you go with her, just do your own research and make your own decisions :) It’s your family, after all.
