Akita Bonsai Nursery

**This review is purely as a bonsai nursery**
The name of the nursery is a bit misleading. 95% of what they have is more like landscaping topiary. They do have a large amount of juniper whips (the woman helping us did not know what kind of juniper), but no pre-​bonsai or bonsai quality stock.
If you’re looking for a full sized Japanese themed garden, you’d probably find some success here.

Masa did an awesome job transforming my back yard into an oasis. He is really a visionary and just pictures in his head what your landscaping should look like. He’s not too good at drawing so just trust him and your back yard could look like mine and your neighbors will be jealous.

I started designing the landscaping for my house and decided to do a Chinese/​Japanese garden type theme. It has been VERY difficult to find the right types of plants. Most nurseries and landscapers don’t specialize in this area so it has been impossible to find what I am looking for.
Even some of the «Japanese» nurseries don’t have much stock, and what they do have is junky and expensive. But I hit the jackpot when I found Akita. Akita was recommended to me by the Green Ninja (a Japanese landscaper who used to work at the Emperors palace in Tokyo).
So I called the owner, Masa, and setup an appointment to meet him at his nursery for a consultation. He was VERY kind and extremely helpful. He spent over an hour working with me to walk me through his SEA of plants and instructing me on what design elements would work well and which plants were good.
He literally has thousands and thousands of bonsai style Chinese/​Japanese junipers, Japanese black pines, Japanese maples, bamboo, palms, mondo grass, and so so much more. He not only has this nursery in Huntington Beach but also 2 other growing farms! Crazy. He has been training these plants for over 20 years. I have never seen a place like this.
Masa is also a full service landscaper. He is in demand and is very busy so I really appreciated him spending so much time with me today. He is usually out with clients so you cant always catch him at the nursery.
