College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving

These clowns showed up for a quote, none of whom were hunky by any means. Their «leader» resembled Silent Bob from Mall-​rats, except he didn’t stop talking. The two goons he brought with him were waiting around in the driveway spinning a tennis racket in the air that they picked up from the garage, goofing, cursing LOUDLY, and using the word «bro» all too excessively. Oh and they couldn’t maneuver their truck.
After that malarky, Silent Bob gives a quote of $ 12,000+ saying it’ll be over 20 truckloads, but they could do it for $ 8,000-$ 9,000. They agreed and got started immediately, but said they’d arrive with two trucks each day throughout the week!
All said and done, they got to 13 trucks, NOT over 20, which would’ve been the exact price without the «discount». So basically, they knew it would be 13 trucks, overpriced it, and pretended to give an epic discount.
In closing, if you’d like to be ripped off by a bunch of unprofessional community college kids, knock yourself out! I’ll be renting a dumpster next time!

I used Hunks (twice in the past 12 months) to empty an old, large house with a mix of trash and gently used items. They were reliable, hard working, asked all the right questions before and during the work, and provided all around great service. Workers were good people, managers easy to deal with. Great service.

I scheduled an appointment with College Hunks about 2 weeks ago for them to just come to my place & do an estimate the following week on a Monday. After the estimate was complete on that Monday, I called College Hunks HQ. I asked whomever I spoke to one the phone if College Hunks is insured, licensed, & bonded. They say yes, they are.
I said that for the next appointment, they have to contact & communicate with my Building’s management (which I gave them a phone number for) so that College Hunks and my building are protected from any issues that may arise when my couch is picked-​up/​hauled off the premises (from seeing one of the reviews, I clearly know that this is vitally important). Appointment made for the FOLLOWING Monday. An entire week’s time to get the insurance squared away.
By the way, the guys who do the manual labor? Very nice & extremely professional. A good 5 stars. They notified me about what time they’d come to do the estimate & they let me know on the day of my SUPPOSED pick-​up that got pushed back that they would be running quite late. So at least they communicated with me…
I call the Thursday before my pickup to make sure they had the information. My building company still didn’t have any information from College Hunks. I also called Sunday to see if College Hunks submitted the necessary information to my building. They say they did, but heard nothing back from my building. Again, my building management said they hadn’t heard or received anything from College Hunks.
Day of the couch pickup? NO INSURANCE SUBMITTED BY COLLEGE HUNKS TO MY BUILDING.
I don’t understand how putting 2+2 together to talk & communicate to my building’s management is so tough in order to get permission to move my couch. I’ve dealt with numerous other companies that needed to correspond with my building’s management for installation & movement of property and there have been no communication issues whatsoever regarding those situations.
A very sad, poor situation that could have easily been avoided. Minus 4 stars.
I’m giving them another week because there are many junk removal companies that aren’t licensed, so I’m stuck.
But quite frankly, it’s extremely unacceptable that communication is a weakness with this company.

Movers were on time, very professional, and very nice. Handled with care, worked hard the entire time. I would hire them again!

Easy to schedule, on-​time, and job was neatly and carefully done. I would definitely use them again.

This company was the worst movers ever. There team didn’t know how to un assemble and then assemble furniture at all. They wasted so much time figuring out how to assemble furniture, And were billing us that entire time. Please look for another company to move your furniture.

On time, friendly, got the job done to satisfaction. Came same day! Needed basement full of crap gone fast and didn’t have to wait. Professional young working men, highly recommend and would call again for future work. Thanks guys!

I’ve moved MANY times (locally, cross-​country, internationally), and this company did it as well as anyone I’ve worked with. Admittedly, I told them upfront we needed 3 guys who wanted to be there, not 1 or 2 pros plus a slacker (or two). They sent us a very experienced, pleasant, and efficient crew, which included one of the managers, Mike.
They showed up about 1-​hour late, but it was Fri. afternoon so not unexpected, and they had called to update me. After the walk-​through with paperwork to sign and pads placed to protect lobby area, they started blanket wrapping and loading the truck. A few times along the way, I got anxious; some of the wrapping of furniture seemed time-​consuming. They spent 2 hours 20 mins. loading, plus an additional 20 mins to get a large truck 2.5 miles to our new place, so I thought for sure they were going to run way over the estimated time (of 3−¾ hours).
BUT, then they unloaded with astonishing speed and stamina (up a flight of stairs)!! They finished in just about the time estimated. They figured out how to make an extremely tight entry to the apartment with an oversized couch. They helped us adjust rugs and other furniture, and hauled some empty boxes away. All the while, they were perfectly courteous. The best part: I didn’t hear one crash or loud wall-​bang, and nothing was broken when we unpacked; they were meticulous in their prep and careful with the items, but also quite athletic. When my wife was so amazed afterward, I just acted like this is what professionals do, but I know it’s unusual to find these days. They busted their butts for us and made a somewhat stressful day go quite smoothly.
Today (a week later), I received a thank you note from Mike! They are seriously nice and talented movers — among the best I’ve ever worked with and totally worth it. Thanks, guys.

I can’t describe how wonderful the service I received from this fabulous company from the moment I picked up the phone to obtain service to the very end when they packed up and left. Very professional in taking my order and explaining how the process works. They called the day after to confirm the order and again 2 days before. The morning of I received a confirmation call and a text. The Hunks called about hour prior to them coming. They reviewed and inspected the furniture and noted any signs of wear/​tear/​damage. They use protective wrap and a covering to make sure the furniture will not get damaged before hauling it to my destination. This was a large heavy sectional couch and many stairs. They are prompt, respectful, and courteous (and handsome). It was done amazingly quickly. I could not have it done on my own that fast. At the destination they unwrapped, and placed the furniture where I desired., then reviewed the results of the inspection and accepted payment cc or cash. About a week later I received a nice thank you card from the Hunks which was a nice gesture. I will definitely use them again in the future for my moving needs. I highly recommend their service to anyone buying furniture online/​newspaper/​friend or moving furniture/​junk from home/​office/​storage. Thank you guys!

Good experience, but be careful when booking move on website, you can’t book move, only can book estimate, but that is not clear. Luckily, called to confirm and scheduled on phone with not much difficulty. On day of move they arrived within window, but never called like they said they would to confirm time. But once they arrived, the move went seamless, professional and friendly and I would use them again in a heartbeat. But be aware, the cart– away service can be pricey — but they will tell you that upfront. Cart away is not based on time, it is on volume. :)

The College Hunks were just here and I sent them away, since the price they quoted on-​site was more than THREE TIMES what I was led to believe on the phone. Maybe they figure most people will give in and pay to have it over with, but this is outrageous. If you’re thinking of using this service, be aware that the price for a «full load» on their web site DOES NOT include labor, like it does with other services, so that was a huge addition. These guys also said the truck they brought was extra large, and «depending on how we pack it,» our junk could take up the equivalent of two or three loads. Even the price listed for a single load –supposedly $ 638 for our Sag Harbor zip code – had mysteriously turned to $ 770. All tolled, it was going to be nearly $ 2,000. No thank you.

Prompt. friendly and professional. In NYC, where good, reliable help is hard to find, and where almost every agency wants you to come to them, College Hunks comes to you, and gets the job done.
For the many New Yorkers without cars, College Hunks is a great option.

This is the second time I’ve used College Hunks. They are amazing!!! Tim and Zack did whatever I needed always with a great attitude and desire to help. I’ll be moving soon and I will definitely use them!

The absolute worst !!! They not only damaged my furniture and broke my things. They estimated me $ 800.00 and charged me $ 1,225.00. Two separate trucks broke down at 2 different times during the move and they were more concerned with tending to the trucks then my things. They damaged my expensive bed, my leather couch, my expensive stand up pedestal wooden framed mirror. China & crystal. They do not & will not accept insurance claims but they claim to be «Licensed & Bonded & Insured». They intimidate you into signing paperwork & Do Not Guarantee their work. I don’t care what ever good review you may read. But take it from me. Wait until they damage your property and find out for yourself. You would be Stupid to hire them. I’m just an ordinary, single mom of a special needs teen that is struggling to live here on Long Island. And my money is worked hard for. If you have money to piss away & don’t care about buying new things then take your chances. I would rate them negative stars if I could.

I am so happy I went with CHHJ– I am 37 weeks pregnant and my husband and I decided to downsize our furniture to make room for baby, something I had to take care of by myself since my husband is busy traveling for work.
however, downsizing in NYC is almost as expensive as upgrading or moving, and I had a hard time finding a company that would not only come pick up our bulky furniture (for a DECENT REASONABLE PRICE) but also try to find a good home for a slightly used and incredibly comfortable piece of furniture.
I had gone with NYCHA in the past to donate, and was beyond disappointed to learn that they have limitations to just how far they are willing to go to help others and pick up donations. They basically told me that I was on my own as far as getting the furniture out of my apartment, but they’d gladly do the easy parts of picking up the furniture and taking it away. Remember, 37 weeks pregnant. Not much I can do to lift anything lately.
This was not the case with CHHJ. I had the pleasure of getting Tyler and Eric D as my movers, and they were so extremely polite and told me that my furniture was going back to their warehouse to get spruced up before they found a good home for it. Not only that, but the offered to help me clean up all the dust bunnies revealed once the couch was removed– they were complete gentlemen and SO careful with the rest of the furniture in my home and the building they were moving everything out of. This company is absolutely fantastic and the most reasonably priced out of any junk/​furniture removal service in the city. I will most definitely be recommending them to anyone and everyone who needs to get rid of furniture in the future.

One of the worst experiences I have ever had with a company. I had scheduled them to come clean out a house — donating furniture and junking stuff. I gave all the measurements to people on the phone and was told it would be at max a full truck, probably less.
Well, they show up (after I had scheduled things around them) and say it is going to be at least 1 ½ trucks, probably 2! So, in other words, likely over $ 1200 pre-​tax. I explained to the guy on site that I had given the measurements of the items on the phone, and was told differently. He said he was the one judging and there is no way it would be under 1 ½ trucks. Well, I turned down the estimate and started feverishly calling other services.
The next day The Junkluggers come and do it all in ⁵⁄₆^th of a (same size) truck.
What a horrible experience with College Hunks. Never use them. Use Junkluggers.

This review is based solely on pricing and how they quote you and not their service. I declined service once I received the quote.
I had 4 garbage bags of clothes and shoes to donate to Goodwill. Goodwill recommended College Hunks as their partner to pick up donations. It was made very clear that there would be a fee to pick up the donation. In my mind (I guess) I ASSumed it would be a small fee or somewhat marginal fee of $ 30 – 40 bucks. HA! A pick up fee of $ 198.00! WTF. I’ve paid movers to move an apartment for two hours less than that!
I don’t know if I was offended at the price or the fact that they wont confirm any pricing until the day before! I cant imagine how they are going to stay in business with this model.
Don’t even waste your time if your donating your clothes. You do better just putting them outside your building w. a sign saying «Take Me» Save yourself the aggravation and clutter.

My first review! Hooray! My first experience with college hunks moving junks… not hooray? So «not hooray» that it prompted me to write my first review.
First of all, we had maybe 10 pieces of furniture to move. Not much but couldn’t do it ourselves. when getting quotes from competing companies, one thing that swayed us towards the hunks was how they stressed how careful they were with all furniture including wrapping the furniture and padding all doors.
Long story short, they showed up over an hour late (which if you live in a coop apartment, is a big deal) the couch leg was damaged in the move. Which sucked. But kinda get it. Accidents happen. Luckily though they «guarantee» all damages that occur during the move… At least that’s what they claimed when they quoted us.
In reality, I filed a claim. Nobody called me. After a week I called them. They claimed they warned me that they could move the furniture «but it was going to get damaged in the process.» Huh. Probably not something I’d agree to. But OK. I was then told that they couldn’t do anything because the guarantee didn’t cover any damage if I was told beforehand that it would be damaged or if there wasn’t a minimum of 5″ on each side of whatever piece of furniture they were moving.
I was persistent. Finally, the claim reviewer, said the only thing she could offer me was a check for $ 1.99 (that’s right, one dollar and 99 cents) so I could go to bed bath and beyond to buy a furniture marker.
