90% of the store is romance fiction… That’s not a book store. It’s a romance fiction book store.

I finally checked this place out. I agree they have thousands of books but literally half of the store is dedicated to romance novels. I have never seen so many in my life. Non-Fiction and Biographies are quite limited. The store is very focused on paperback fiction. The atmosphere is warm and homey. I really wish there was a better selection of non-fiction books. Until then I’ll be at Half Priced Books.

If you’re a book addict like me, this used book store is heaven! They have thousands of used books scores of genres. A majority of the books are paperbacks, with some new books(25 percent off!), some hardbacks, audio books, etc. Books you bring in here are accepted for trade, NOT bought! Paperbacks get you credit for one-fourth the publishers price. They will take hardbacks off your hands, but there is no credit or money for them. There are lots of rules about what they can and cannot accept for trade, and the staff is very nice about explaining the differences. You can use your credit towards most other used paperbacks, which are priced at one-half the publishers price. If you don’t use all your credit at one time, it will be kept on file for two years, for use at your convenience(computer automatically deletes credit after two years). For each outgoing transaction involving your credit, the first five dollars in used books must be paid in cash(plus tax), with the credit on file deducted thereafter. If you use up all your credit before the transaction is complete, the cost of each book will be added to the total in addition to the first five dollars charged. There are lots of other rules about which things you get can have credit applied, and which things are cash only, etc. Some things you bring in, you can get credit for, and some you can’t. A lot of it seems arbitrary, but it’s pretty fair. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. And speaking of friendly, I LOVE the store’s «mascats,»(what hubby and I call the mascots) Pyewacket, a black cat(named from«Bell, Book and Candle), and Harlee Quinn(Harlee for short), a cute, young orange and white girl kitty. It’s often tickled us, the thought of cats running things at Dog Eared Books! You’ll often see them sleeping in the window, or patroling the store, or even helping out at the check-out counter. The staff — Tina(part ownermanager), Dorothy(full-time employee), and Connie(part-time employee) — are always glad to help you try to find what you are looking for. Check out the store’s website for more information and details about policies, stock, staff, cats, etc. The store is clean, well-organized, and cheery … a great place to lose yourself, anytime(although my favorite times are rainy days; cold, snowy ones; or the sunny, too-hot-to-breathe summer days). Whatever. If you love to read, do yourself a favor and check out Dog Eared ½ Price Books! The store is located on the east side of Noland Road, north of I-70, between 39th and 35th Streets.
