I was referred to Dr. Priya Young by my family physician in an effort to finally resolve what seemed like a fairly simple dermatological issue that I’d been unable to resolve on my own or with my family physician’s help. I had avoided this appointment like the plague, partially because I avoid doctors as much as I can, partly because I knew that certain self-care issues were involved and, quite honestly, partly because I’m an intensely introverted person and found these dermatological/disability related issues to be embarrassing. However, after several months of unsuccessful care, I finally asked my doctor for the referral. As I had been referred directly to Dr. Young, partly because of the specific issues and partly because of my increased comfort with female physicians, my appointment was scheduled out a bit further than I’d have preferred. I may be wrong, but my sense was that if I’d been more open to other physicians that I’d have likely been scheduled earlier than the few weeks it took to get in. They offer online registration paperwork. While not everyone wants to do this, it’s a great option for those who don’t want to show up and fill out a bunch of forms. In my case, I completed the paperwork in advance and only had to sign one form when I arrived. Given that I had a 7am appointment, that rocked. It also helps those of us who have chronic health issues that we don’t always remember on the spur of the moment. Plus, my fine motor skills aren’t the greatest so being able to type instead of hold a pen is a great option. They have four locations — Castleton, Eastside, Kokomo and Anderson. They pretty much offer the full spectrum of dermatological services including having a psoriasis center, offering acne surgery, having a research group, serving up a variety of specific procedures, medical dermatology and more. They also offer cosmetic dermatology. My appointment was at the Castleton location which is in the network of office buildings surrounding Community North. The office is on the second floor — I was familiar with it having had cataract surgery in the same building. I was pleased that Dr. Young offered some early morning options, a terrific choice for working folks. I was also pleased that I didn’t feel«harassed» about wanting an early appointment. There are times doctors can make you feel like you’re being«precious» for wanting appointments outside the usual 9 – 5. There’s plenty of accessible parking here, an elevator to the second floor, and push-button automated doors. I will note that it was fairly dark downstairs when I arrived about 6:45am — so if you have vision issues you should take note. If I have one concern about access, and it’s common in physicians’ offices, it’s that they are so seldom set up for wheelchairs in the exam rooms. In order to examine my concern, it took both the physician and the nurse as I had to stay in my wheelchair(which was fine, but it made examining more difficult). It’s a modest issue and I don’t feel like it should cost them a star because the staff handled it well. I did feel like there was a touch of awkwardness around it, but that was also partly(I think) because I was a new patient, I was a male who’d requested a female, and they weren’t 100% sure what my physical limitations were. As a fairly severe trauma survivor, I’m ALWAYS more comfy with female practitioners but will go to men when it’s necessary. I knew, given my feelings about this issue, that having a female doctor would make me more likely to follow through. The nurse, whose name I’ve completely forgotten(sorry!), was friendly and helpful. Dr. Young was on time, took less than 15 minutes, explained what she believed the issue to be and offered written, concrete suggestions for addressing it without being condescending(because it was a fairly basic issue). She accepted questions well and answered them clearly. She took the time I needed, but also didn’t waste time or try to «pad» the examination time. She didn’t find things that weren’t wrong(some doctors act like auto mechanics, ya know?). The staff of the practice was friendly, even at 7am, and it’s worth noting that the practice has been named one of Indy’s best places to work the last 3 years. The environment in the waiting room was warm, welcoming, and nicely decorated without seeming to be extravagant. It didn’t feel institutional, but it also didn’t feel like«Oh, so this is why I pay so much.» I’ve yet to experience the billing and can’t offer feedback on that issue yet. Barring any major mistakes, I wouldn’t expect it to negatively impact the rating here. I’ve got one more appointment to ensure that the expected treatment plan actually works and, once again, I was offered a reasonable appointment time. Dr. Young and everyone I encountered was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and respectful and greatly reduced my overwhelming resistance. It was appreciated!

Dr Young is excellent and takes the necessary time needed. She’s usually on time and her staff is nice. Watch the billing since they tend to bill and insurance hadn’t been billed properly multiple times.
