Walmart Neighborhood Market

I literally live right between the Walmart Supercenter on Pendleton Pike and this Walmart Neighborhood Market so it’s a coin toss who I go to when I need to get groceries. Usually this Walmart wins (affectionately called «Baby Walmart» by my kids) because I just don’t feel like dealing with the crowds and hassles of a larger store. Today however, I wish I would have gone to the Supercenter.
I arrive, all three kids in tow, around 1:30 on a Monday. Not too shabby crowd-​wise. I get my items (only 20 mind you) and then the waiting begins. For some reason, they think that if you have self-​checkout lanes they don’t need to have real, live people check you out. Wrong. Firstly, half of the self-​check lanes are credit/​debit card only, no cash back. Bummer. Secondly, no one is around to help you when said lanes need a key turned or generally just crash.
I waited in a self-​check lane through one person, and then the lady in front of me needed something voided or whatnot. No big deal, except no employee was available or whatever. We waited for about 4 minutes before we both packed it up and went to another lane. My second mistake was going to another self-​check lane, hoping to speed things along as the ONLY lane that had a real, live person was 6 people deep and the lady with the overflowing cart was still a couple people back. So now I’m waiting in the self-​check lane, another person ahead of me again and finally, its my turn! Hooray! My kids are beginning to get cranky! And wouldn’t you know it, almost immediately something doesn’t scan, then as I’m bagging something it scans twice and I need a void. So the waiting commences.
I see no less than six (yes, SIX) employees walk by, my little light flashing red with the pleasant female voice declaring that someone would be with me momentarily the whole time and no one helps. So yet AGAIN, for the SECOND time I pack up my things and this time head to a lane that has a real person. This time I’m the FOURTH person in line and by this time my kids are beginning to deep breathe in preparation for the wailing and gnashing of teeth that marks the end of officially being in one place for too long. I tried my best to be friendly, but wasn’t met with much in the way of, oh shall we say, personality, kindness, humanity???
So all in all, I spent almost 30 minutes simply trying to check out with three kids in tow. That is just unacceptable. I want to like you «Baby Walmart» I really do, but this kind of thing can’t continue. Sad when I’m considering going to your big brother down the way as an «improvement.»

Use to stop here to buy few items, water etc. Long lines, never enough check outs open, if you need help at self check out forget it, no one around. Bought hamburger meat in here, Gross and tasteless. Years ago Joe Omalias store was here and this is no Joe Omalias.

If you are wanting groceries and basic items, this location is much better than visiting the Walmart Supercenter (shudder) off of Keystone. It was stocked with the majority of my typical list items, the ceilings were low to make it feel like a more traditional grocery, the store was relatively clean, and there were self-​check-​out lines.
However, numerous issues make me wary to choose visiting this store over Aldis or Kroger: 1) No one was designated to assist the self-​checkouts, so when our screen was halted due to trying to purchase a compressed air duster (’cause we would huff it? I don’t know), we waited… and waited… and just left. The other cashiers appeared busy and/​or unseeing, and our blinking red light was avoided. I’d hate to think of the possible line back-​ups on a busier day. 2) The parking lot was a mess, with overflowing cart corrals. I witnessed multiple incidents of carts hitting cars due to the windy day, with one ambitious circling cart hitting 3 cars in a row. 3) The produce section and a few of the aisles felt very cramped.
If you are going to try to be a classier Walmart, with your green shirts and faux market feel, then also extend that vision outside the doors, think of the entire customer experience.

I really can’t believe I’m writing a review for Walmart. I also can’t believe that I’m giving a Walmart 4 stars.
As someone else mentioned, the Walmart on 71^st and Keystone is basically hell on earth, so when I heard this one was opening, I thought I’d try it. hey, can’t be worse than that one.
Every time I’ve been to this Walmart, I’ve had a great experience. It’s not crowded, it’s clean, and it’s a manageable size. It has a full grocery and pharmacy… so don’t go there if you’re trying to get clothes, furniture, etc., but for basic shopping it’s great. And because it’s Walmart, the prices are the best. Also, I’ve never had to wait in line. It’s well staffed and also has a self-​checkout.
I fear that as it becomes more well-​known, it will also become more crowded and will become the evil twin to the 71^st and Keystone Walmart, but for now, it’s good.

Hey look! It’s my new grocery store!
Pros
–They have a lot of things to grab and make for dinner. I tried their teriyaki chicken and really liked it.
–They have pretty flowers for $ 5.
–I have not had to wait in line there. They have a self checkout
–They have more groceries than most Walmarts.
–They have a deli and pharmacy.
Cons
–They have no organic produce. At least I can’t find it. I would say that their produce section is slightly better than other WalMarts, but it could stand to have a greater selection.

Thrilled that they have such a broad selection of goods at regular Walmart prices. We were worried they’d be more expensive cause they’re a smaller neighborhood store. I should give them 5 stars just for having Jiffy-​Pop popcorn! but… the employees here are not quite with it yet. They’re just standing in the way, blocking the aisles. Hello people I’m here to spend money! I think they’re trying to stock the shelves, which look pretty ragged. The produce section is rather thin. No bike rack? Right off Fall Creek Trail?
But it’s not a bad setup, actually easier to navigate & find things than the one down on Keystone –and easier to get in & out of. So I’m going to make this my regular Walmart stop.

Pros: Organic, 1 lb. bags of quinoa for $ 4.79. I kind of didn’t even want to post that since quinoa is so expensive and if people start buying a lot of it, no doubt Wal Mart will jack up the prices. Quinoa’s prices have shot up considerably in the last decade. I remember I used to be able to buy a 1 lb. box at Trader Joe’s for $ 1.79. Those days are gone. Damn yuppies.
FOUR self-​checkout aisles! Couldn’t be happier about that fact. The less interaction I have to have with the general public, the better.
Carts that ride like a Caddy Deville… had me singing this as I strolled the aisles:
Shiny, smooth floors that enabled me to do some James Brown camel walkin’
Extremely quiet with no bad ass kids running around like little hellions.
Cons: Meh… it’s a Wal Mart through and through with regard to food selections. Produce leaves much to be desired; it almost isn’t even worth it to stroll that direction. If this is Wal Mart’s effort to gain some market share in the ‘fresh market’ category, well, they failed miserably. And, if I’m being perfectly honest, I don’t get it. Are they that out of touch with what a lot of people are wanting these days from their grocer? With Wal Mart’s buying power, they could absolutely make a killing (I presume) in the organic/​natural health food stores. They could undercut everyone yet they haven’t. It’s perplexing. Maybe they think it would take business from their other stores? Maybe they think it would piss off their vendors?
I’m glad it’s here though, because the 71^st & Keystone location is where the scourge of the earth like to congregate.

How about that! Someone from Walmart submitted their own store as a new business on Unilocal just as it opened! So Walmart has a heads-​up social media person, and Unilocal is actually on Walmart’s radar. That means Unilocal,including Unilocal Indy, has hit the big time.
This address is essentially E 56^th and Emerson. Just opened Oct 1, 2014.
