Whoa man… new owners new name and new menu. What was once known as Antigua Restaurant is now El chapin or something like that. My wife and I went in expecting to have delicious Salvadoran food but man were we mistaken. We were greeted by a heavy set man who brought us two menus. He asked us what we would like to drink. My wife ordered a coffee and I ordered an horchata. The guy tells me they don’t sell horchata, so I look over past the counter and see a soda fountain and order a Dr. Pepper, the guy then informs me that they don’t have Dr. Pepper, i pointed to the soda fountain and he said that the restaurant is going for an authentic Guatemalan environment and will not serve drinks not made in Guatemala. «Ok, so what are my options?» I ask him and he points to a fridge with what else? Bottled Coke, fanta and Sprite. Off to the side I see some canned coke and ask for one of those, the guy reminds me that the owner is going for an authentic feel and he cannot serve me a canned coke. «ok so what can you serve me?» And he points at the glass bottles so I give in and order a bottle, the downer is that it’s a huge 1 liter bottle but whatever, the food would be okay I thought. With the drink ordeal behind us we begin looking through the menu. What we found was downright infuriating. Numerous variations of scrambled eggs with bacon, sausage or pancakes and the only authentic dish we saw was a steak dinner platter for about $ 20. WTF? When we saw that this was nowhere near authentic we went to the heavy set man who was tucked away in a corner drinking coffee and eating sweet bread, he eventually came to the front and I informed him we thought it was still a Salvadoran restaurant he said it wasn’t and then hands me a check for the soda and coffee, it was $ 4.00. No problem, i hand the guy my credit card and he informs me that there is a fee of $ 1.25 to use a cc. WTH? I tell him he must be mistaken because it is illegal to charge a person to use a credit card, he proceeds to tell me that all businesses are charging to use CCs, I disagreed and said I refused to pay the fee. He said that was the only way he could charge me, not wanting to stay there any longer than needed, I told him to provide me with a detailed receipt for the drinks and the CC fee, he declined saying he could only give me the print out(transaction slip). I asked him to get me a receipt on a check and he said he didn’t have any as he tried to slide the checkbook under counter. Eventually I grabbed some change i had in my wallet and left that for the drinks. It should go without saying, I won’t be back to this place at all.
