For being in Iowa city on the west side/commercial district this place is a gem in my opinion. We did the hibachi but my parents usually dine at the sit down area. We had a great hibachi chef and the food was also top notch. We had: lobster, scallops, shrimp, calamari, chicken and steak. Each was delectable in their own way. I imagine the seafood must be frozen but it seriously tasted fresh. We also had a great experience of dining with 2 other couples we didn’t know and by the end of the night we were like old time friends. This place is a really a gem and I feel it might get passed over because of the commercial strip it’s in. Great customer service and an overall wonderful experience. Unilocalers make sure to check in on your mobile ap for a FREE order of spring rolls which were also gold!!!

This place was great! The sushi(Hawkeye roll) was intricate with great presentation, delicious. The cook was fun and hibachi grill was wonderful, entertaining and delicious! It wasn’t crowded and the service was prompt(we went on a Friday night). Sushi + hibachi was a lot of food, so probably wouldn’t get that much next time, but wanted to try things. We also had the sake special of Apple flavored sake, which was pretty good. Their other menu options, especially the udon/soba noodles and bento boxes, all look great too. The exterior is not too fancy(parking is in the back) but the interior is nice. Will certainly go back, probably for our next birthday.

This review is solely for the sushi part of the restaurant and not for the hibachi grill. We hope to try that someday as well. We have eaten here twice. The service has been fast. The restaurant is rarely crowded. We have ordered the following rolls: spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, shrimp tempura, seven’s roll, crazy tuna, volcano roll, and a black dragon. I can say that our favorites were the crazy tuna and the volcano roll. The least favorite was the black dragon. However, the rolls were expensive. This is not a place to go on a regular basis if you are on a budget. The décor is best characterized as Asian cheezy, and a little worn. Not really in keeping with the high prices. Last tip: park in the back.

Good food and fun place to eat. It’s hard to find any sushi without seafood in it.(I like places where you can get chicken, steak or veggie sushi without ANY seafood in it) Cooks are fun and talented! And I love the«special sauce» as the cook called it, is sort of light orange in color and consistency of Mayo, delicious!

The experience was just utterly disappointing and agitating. The server went missing after taking our drink(just water) order. We had to ask another server to fetch our server(Jason), and this server just said«why don’t you just talk to our manager?» Uh… hello! How would I know who is your manager!!! Less than a minute later, a lady came and we told her we want water and the food we want. Ok… so 2 minutes later this jason guy finally showed up, «oh I see that you already got water.» = = Then as I was checking into Unilocal on my app, Unilocal told me that I can get a free edamame. I showed it to Jason. He acknowledged it. 5 minutes later he brought out our appetizer and the edamame. Then that lady happened to walked by, she started to question why there is edamame on our table. So I spent another 5 minutes explaining everything. By that point, I got very frustrated and it became obvious to me that there is absolutely no communication among them!!! And it’s just ridiculous that our time was taken away from us to enjoy the food! Then later when the lady brought our check, we were charged for the edamame!!! Can you believe that!!! I told the lady and she just snatched it from me WITHOUT any apology! And again 5 minutes later this Jason guy came by and asked us if we are ready for our check! AHHHHHH!!! Their service was so horrible that it just ruined the entire meal! And please noted that there was less than 20 ppl in that restaurant while we were there. The food wasn’t that great. Onion soup was sour, no onion taste. Scallop bento box was just meh. My friend didnt like her katsu don neither. So basically our Saturday was just that. Nothing awesome. Nothing delicious. The only memorable thing was their horrid service.

Nope nope nope nope. Went there for lunch, waited 20 mins before our order was even taken. Miso soup tasted like dishwater, rice was overcooked. I’ll stick with Oyama in the future.

Fuji exceeded my expectations, with the quality of sushi. I have had good service on all but, one occasion where the wait time was excessive. I do go there frequently and do enjoy the service other than that.

Update: since they apologized and returned the money I spent, I give it two more stars. raise from 1star to 3stars. Original post Food is okay. But they charge you 7% for tax, instead of 6%. More important, on the receipt it still says 6%. 7% * 30.45 = 2.13. Take out your phone and do the math. The manager kept saying she had informed the waiter earlier, but she failed to come up with any kind of compensation or the like. I was rather busy today so I didn’t argue with her for long, just crossed out the tips, and paid them $ 32.58. I don’t know for how long they have been charging 1% more for tax, I mean if they do it to every customer, even 1% is a lot of money — even if it’s not a big amount to each customer, it’s about honesty. Hopefully, they will change it to the correct number. I’m being honest here, I don’t have too much to complain about the food. If you still want to dine here, fine, but please pay attention to the tax.

Went for lunch over the weekend partially because of the good reviews on Unilocal.I am giving this place two stars one for available parking and the second for the nice server and the water tasting good(the fountain drinks that were ordered tasted funky). I did not care for the sushi. I shared the combo which included these rolls: spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy yellowtail. They all looked the same so that was a little annoying but nothing major. It was the taste that was the problem. It was bland. Personally, I like spicy rolls to have cut of the fish and the sauce on top. Anytime a roll looks like it’s already been chewed is problematic for me.

I would recommend coming here! Prices are great and the hibachi grill is so fun and delicious! Lunch time has a special price $ 6.99! Can’t wait to recommend this to my family who also loves sushi!

I discovered Fuji during lunchtime this week. It’s about time the west side of IC has a nice hibachi grill and Japanese style restaurant !

Overall, okay. Wait staff good. Food decent. Our chef, however, may turn others on, but annoyed me. I didn’t appreciate his flirting with teenage daughters and other(married) women in our party saying the sauce was«sexy sauce». When we asked the ingredients in the sauces for health reasons, didn’t get much useful answers. The chef also used a water squirter that was a figurine if a boy. You squirt the water by pulling down his pants. I know it’s just water, but the thought of someone peeing in my food was not appetizing. Chef also was tossing food into mouths of our party, and missing, hitting guests in the face. Some may enjoy the experience, maybe I’m getting old. Decent food. Experience, not so much.

If I were to rate entirely on food, this place would get only one star. The second star is because the décor and service were good. My husband put it best when he said this place has only the vaguest idea of what Japanese food is and a poor understanding of American culture to boot. The harumaki were typical Chinese American spring rolls with a cloyingly sweet sweet-and-sour sauce. The tempura was served with the same sauce as opposed to the traditional dipping sauce. The chicken was breaded with panko instead of the same batter as the vegetables. The zucchini tasted so foul that I got a beer elsewhere to get the taste out of my mouth. The tea, while in a teapot, was a bag of oolong, not green, tea. All the place setting had forks, not chopsticks. The muzack was annoying as well.

Don’t let the outside appearance fool you! I put off going here for awhile because of the curb appeal but I decided to give them a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. The inside is very nicely decorated and they have some fantastic looking hibachi grills im sure would be fun for groups. Great hostess, good server, and even better food. Tried three different rolls and they were all fantastic! Also had the onion soup and loved it. I definitely will come back and will recommend to friends. Lastly the drinks have fantastic prices, imported beers only 3.95 and some domestics were 2.95, and their martinis etc were very reasonable as well, between 5 – 7 dollars! I just think they could have made the outside a little more appealing. That is why I did not give a five star, it’d be a 4.5 if I could.

Good restaurant. Tasty foods. Their hibachi is the best in Iowa city in my opinion. A little bit pricy for student even with student discount. Very nice design and clean.

Our 2nd time at Fuji. Again had a great experience. Will definitely be a regular. Had the seafood soup. Delicious. Husband had the black dragon and crabmeat salad/Kani salad. Both delicious. I asked for a drink called Montana mule. It wasn’t on their list of drinks but the manager gave it a good try. I appreciate his efforts to make a customer happy. Recommend Fuji for sure! Friendly service too.

Nicely decorated, Great service, good sushi. I had the shrimp roll, triple crown roll and shrimp tempura roll.(Photo submitted). I will definitely come back. Maybe to try the hibachi grill with friends. I would not say this is the best Japanese restaurant in town but it does have the potential. This is the first week they have been open, let’s see what the future brings.
