Old World Liquor

The only reason I ever go here is when I’m lazy and don’t feel like driving. This place is a short two minute walk from where I live in Northwood. I’m pretty sure it is only one of two liquor stores in Irvine. Anyway, like any other liquor store they are usually more expensive than going to a grocery store, or BevMo or Total Wine. It’s just a convenience of being close. I’ve only been here twice and on my most recent visit there was a nice, big, fat cockroach hanging out over by the beer. So, not that I was planning to ever buy food here, but that pretty much solidified it. If I ever find myself in urgent need of a six pack or 22 I might stop by again, but probably not.

Look. the 70’s are over. I know if you’re my age, you long for a car like Starsky and Hutch’s to come rolling down the street. It won’t happen. And for some reason if you do see some car just like that driving towards you, it’s a fricken old dude with a gray goatee and an earring in his left ear.
If you grew up in Irvine, you know, there aren’t many liquor stores. Havent been many in fact since the city became a city in 1971. There was Rolf’s in Uni… that place was legendary for its’ spirits and pastrami sandwiches.
But really, where else is there? Minute King? ⁷⁄₁₁? Please!
Old World Liquor is like one of the last men standing… the place where you go in, and your booze is behind the counter, your beer is in the coolers, and your porn is in the racks. It’s got your comfort food (snowballs for me), and your greasy crap like flaming hot cheetos.
Liquor stores just don’t exist like they used to. Hell in the midwest and Texas they have drive through liquor stores. The only place nearby I can think of is that Alta Dena place by Tustin Lanes! This is it. If you’re in high school, this is where you try to buy with a fake ID. This place puts hair on your chest (not that I’m condoning underage alcohol purchasing, sales, or consumption.)
Honor this treasure and every once in a while skip the cheap 30-​pk sale at your grocery store, and go get a 12er here. Sure you’ll pay a little more, but hell this is how drinking and adulthood were meant to be. Please!
