We were really a little surprised to find a winery in a small farming community. We were a little more surprised to find out that if offered an excellent selection of wines. They import the juices but create and bottle their own. We are avid wine drinkers and we tried a few reds, a few ports, a mead and were offered a wine slushie sample which I almost turned down but was glad I didn’t after tasting it. I have never been fond of anything remotely slushy and sweet, but it was wonderful — both tart and sweet with an excellent finish. The menu promised wines of great complexity with balanced tannin’s which seemed like a big statement for a little place to be making, but they nailed it. We have enjoyed California wineries and Hometown Cellars does lack California and maybe even Traverse City Winery sophistication, but it’s atmosphere is a kind of comfortable and down home feel with an edge of elegance. The wines we sampled surpassed many California and other Michigan wines. I would mention the seasonal port, but this would probably become a sonnet. I fell deeply and hopelessly in love with the port. The owners were very friendly. We enjoyed ourselves tremendously and will definitely be back.

A large variety of wines, including fruit wines. Also has beer and soda available. Nice people, nice atmosphere. Very few wines that I liked, but I would return just as a nice place to hang with old friends.
