This museum has done some very amazing things, considering it’s small space and limited public funding. It is located in a historic old building. It’s very inexpensive, only $ 4.50 for an adult. Downstairs there are powerful and painful excerpts from slave narratives. Upstairs, there is an amazing interactive exhibit featuring a portion of a slave ship that you can go inside and it fills you with such an eerie feeling to know human beings were transported in such conditions. It has a lot of information on the civil rights movement in Mississippi, including a whole section devoted to the life of Medgar Evers. In my opinion, this is an absolute must visit in the city of Jackson. There is far too limited museums dedicated to the civil rights, which is ironic because Mississippi historically has been a major area in this movement. Even though I lived in Jackson as a child, I never visited this museum. None of the people that I spoke to in Jackson had visited the museum, and many did not even know where it was. It is located in the historic Farish district of Jackson. As of July 2015 there was some road construction in front of the museum, making it a little bit tricky to locate it. After visiting the museum, I strongly recommend heading down to Farish Street and having a pigs ear sandwich from the Big Apple Inn. Go there!

Much more than meets the eye. The interior is totally renovated and spacious charming well appointed museum. The 1st floor has local art, folk and contemporary. 2nd floor has african american history from middle passage to Medgar Evers. A large space with some local artifacts from the last century. The atrium space is a beautiful peaceful space, i hear it’s often used for receptions and gatherings. Credit to cultural profile of the area and definitely to Af-American museums which can often be under funded.
