Just passing through central Michigan and found this joint. Arrived just after opening at 11AM and by the time I left the line was out the door. I ordered the Grand with Russian slaw — what a delight, hit the spot and great price. Big menu of sandwiches and I have a feeling every one of them is excellent. Would go back here in a heartbeat.

Had the Reuben. Great flavor, but very small bun. Menu says rye«sub.» Wouldn’t call what I received a sub bun. The meat was not stacked high, either, like the menu describes. They could grab more traveling customers off of Interstate 94 if their web site helped identify which block it is on & how to find parking nearby. The road construction adds challenges because of Michigan Avenue street closure. Asked for water and got a cup without ice! What’s that about? No ice? It is like they didn’t have the energy to reach for 4 – 5 stars. Menu sounded great!

½ Pound Reuben A REUBEN’S A REUBEN … It is what it is! Corned Beef piled high with Swiss Cheese and Sauerkraut on European Bakery Dark Rye Sub with 1000 Island Dressing. The perfect choice for Reuben lovers everywhere! $ 6.75 Just like they say above, it is what it is! And yes, every bite was delectable! From the moist Corned Beef, to the crunch of the Dark Rye. Add the Swiss, Kraut and 1K Island and you have an exceptional explosion of flavor in your mouth! The Pickle Barrel is a quint joint in Jackson, MI. Actually, I’d almost think Pickle Barrel put Jackson on the map, aside from it being the place where Michigan’s first state prison was located. Regardless of the history, go make some history yourself and Hit The Pickle!(No pun intended)

Had a sandwich there about a month ago. The turkey was rubbery and the bread soggy. Terrible

My favorite place in town for getting a good lunch. Highly recommended, get the weekly special, health smart soups, they have a few salad selections, or one of the awesome sandwiches.

Seems different then it was in the past. Pickles are smaller and not as good. And the dressing on my sandwich was lacking. As others have stated, it’s entirely too smoky inside. A vent hood would fix the issue.

Very good Reuben. Cool interior décor. High quality corned beef — the most important thing for a good reuben. The folks working were super friendly.

Hands down my favorite place to eat in Jackson when I visit. So proud to see an establishment actually recycle and use Eco friendly products. The location is prime and has easy parking. The atmosphere is friendly and inviting with a lot to look at. There is ample seating as well as high chairs for your little one. Everything was very clean, including the restroom. Brandy took my order and was so pleasant and knowledgeable about everything on their menu. She gave me great recommendations and helped me and my baby to our table since my hands were full. Seriously the best customer service I’ve ever had in this town. I loved their use of so many local products. My food was outstanding and I can’t wait to try everything on their menu.

A local business with outstanding food. This is exactly what Jackson needs more of and you should absolutely come here. It has a nice café/deli atmosphere, Zingerman’s bread and reasonable prices. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.

Walked in and the air was so thick from smoke from the grill(no vent over panini grills) that I wanted to puke. Never ate here. Had to leave. My jacket smells like burnt oily bread now.

This is my favorite lunch-time location! I could eat the Field’s Veggie every day. No, seriously. It’s the best sandwich ever! Every time I have out-of-town friends visit, I take them to The Pickle Barrel, and everyone adores it!

Pretty sure that this is one of the few, if not the only, place in town that serves Russian Slaw on their sandwiches, and THAT is one of the only reasons I come here. Although they are slightly overpriced, the sandwiches are very good, and have a taste that isn’t typical of «Jackson»!

Seriously one of the best local places in Jackson. So great for lunch. If you’re a sandwich guy(or girl) it’s a must try! They have a great Ruben(The Grande) and every other sandwich I’ve tried has been absolutely delish! It does have a tendency to smell like burnt bread at times because they give you the option to have your sandwich grilled,(which you should!). Great service and better food! Décor could use a little help but the buildings interior is super cool by itself.

One of my absolute favorites in Jackson! The atmosphere is awesome, the food is fantastic, and the owners have seen me there enough that they know me by name. My favorite sandwich is the Blake Building and their Garden Tomato soup is the best tomato soup there ever was!

As I just finished stuffing my face with a fields veggie sandwich from here, I couldn’t help but jump on Unilocal to write some good words about The Pickle Barrel. This place is SO delish! They are always very consistent with their food and service. The prices are very reasonable and they use quality ingredients. Many of their products are MI based, which I love. I also have had a few catering orders and they are efficient in accommodating special requests and pick up times. I would highly recommend The Pickle Barrel as I think it is one of the BEST spots for lunch!

My sandwich was absolutely amazing! I got one of the Veggie sandwiches. It is really easy to mess up a veggie sandwich and end up with something bland but this was seriously one of the best sandwiches I’ve had! They use Zingerman’s bread and you can buy loaves of fresh Zingerman’s there as well. I loved the atmosphere of the place too… very fresh and young. The owner was really nice and was working behind the counter. Its great to see how interested he was in his customers. I will definitely be coming back here – and with friends – when I am in Jackson next! The pickle was delicious and not some flimsy. soggy slice of a thing that you get in other places. It was a massive, flavorful pickle! If I had to guess I would say they make the pickles there or buy them from someone local. So good.

Love love love some Pickle Barrel! Huge amazing sandwiches on great Zingermans bread. A bit on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. No pre-made deli sandwich here. If you are looking for a good locally owned place for some great food, show your love to the Pickle Barrel!

Seen this place while visiting Daryl’s and thought we would give it a try. I paid almost $ 12 for a sandwich, chips, and a drink. It was a very«normal» sandwich. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t like mmm that was awesome! My friend got a sample cup(salad dressing container) of pasta salad. I thought it was a joke! haha. If your into high priced, «go green» kinda places, then pickle barrel is your place!

Unilocal to the rescue in finding a place to eat in Jackson, MI for a group of out-of-towners after a business meeting in town. Seeing review mentioning Zingerman’s bread sealed the deal for us, as our other option was to drive to Zingerman’s for lunch. This place was a great local spot. I ordered the Pickle Carrel Special and it arrived looking intimidating with the amount of meat in the sandwich. It was a great sandwich though. Bread and meats were both very tasty. We then wrapped up the meal with a selection of cookies and brownies. Overall a nice stop and we got to see a small piece of Jackson.
