My main experience with this gallery is on First Fridays in 5 Points, but I love this gallery. Shea, the owner, also co-owns Underbelly, an awesome bar behind the great little [inexpensive] boutique Anomaly, which also happens to neighbor Flux. What I love about Flux is that the art is all local and all really unique and young and creative and progressive. It seems local, it seems fresh, and it is at times pretty shocking. The building is unassuming, funky and eclectic. It isn’t stuffy like your standard gallery. I definitely recommend this place to everyone. It will really give you a great taste for what 5 Points is all about, as the young artistic neighborhood in Jacksonville. It is a great place.

I was here for the NEXT event, and I was really really impressed with this gallery. Most of the galleries I’ve seen in Jacksonville and St. Augie are pretty conservative, realistic style art. Flux was a refreshing change of pace from the normal paintings of people, flowers, and landscapes(yawn!) that I normally come across. The art found at Flux caters an audience with a more youthful and trendy taste. I’m not sure how to describe it, except to say that if you are a fan of Salvador Dali and other artists who try to think outside the box, you’d appreciate Flux. The artwork featured in this gallery is sometimes whimsical, sometimes thought provoking, but in general strange and fun. There is no doubt that the gallery picked some really fine artists.

Finding flux studio/gallery, and its co-owner, artist Shea Slemmer, was a huge highlight of my weekend. This is the type of art gallery I find truly inspiring for many reasons. It’s a long story and there’s no reason you’d want to hear most or all of it, so I’ll just stick to the facts. One, they show and support local Jacksonville artists and musicians. Two, the founders keep the pricing very reasonable. Three, they’ve got an eye for talent and exceptional taste in contemporary art. Four, there’s none of the typical art gallery attitude at flux(this is huge). Five, opening a place like this in Jax, in a shaky economy, is a major commitment that deserves accolades and serious support. So, those are my five stars right there. LDC and I were fortunate enough to be there when one of the artists currently exhibiting, Overstreet Ducasse, dropped in. His paintings were already among our favorites, and after talking with him about his inspirations and process, we liked them even more. Funny thing is, a similar scenario happened with Shea, the co-owner. Now, with some galleries, friendly conversations are really all about sales. Not here. That, plus the lack of pretension, make this a place I can assure you we’ll be revisiting and supporting as much as possible. Bottom line: I’d recommend flux studio/gallery to anyone, no matter what type/s of art you like. Check it out on First Fridays, or visit their website for special events, and help them support local Jax artists and musicians. Highly recommended.
