STAYAWAY if you value your hair at all. This was the absolute worst hair salon experience of my life. After working hard for several years to grow out my hair, I decided to get a short cut for the summer and made the mistake of going to this salon for a touch up perm and color rinse. The shampoo girl, who i really think was high off something, left me with product on my hair to get her lunch! The stylist asked someone else to wash my hair, she was busy eating her lunch and paid no mind to the request. Mind you, the stylist did nothing to help either. Needless to say, my hair was left over processed and fell out in huge patches. These people have no regard for the customer or your time. They run their mouth about pure nonsense instead of paying attention to the customer. One star by default… I can’t rate 0 stars.

I had crochet braids done yesterday at Impulse and left there having to go home to fix my hair because the stylist could not curl the hair. PLEASEDONOT go to impulse for crochet braids using Marley hair. I have never left a salon more dissatisfied. The stylist was a half hour late, she worked very slow and after the installation of the crochet braids she using perm rods to attempt to curl the hair but she was unsuccessful, none of the hair curled. I was there from 9−4pm and left with hair that looked like I did it myself. That should never happen at a professional salon. I warn you. Do not go there for crochet braids!

I was and still in need of a personal hairstylist. Someone who is not only great at doing hair, but with great personality. Someone I can grow into to just hook my hair up with whatever.. I was recommended, Hokie. She did a marvelous job. BUT a partial weave for $ 150 is too much especially for a college student. My only means of transportation is MTA and i live in Brooklyn. So not only its expensive, its too far for me(my personal problem). because i was so in love with the way Hokie worked, I went back again despite the price and traveling time. overall I stopped going because of high price :(

Your typical barbershop scene. Guys talking anything from sport to politics over some good tunes. I get a haircut from Ian about every two weeks. He does an awesome job each time. He’s very precise with the razor. Just expect a long wait, because this barbershop is highly favored and has plenty of regulars.

I have gotten my hair done here for the past six months, a lil overpriced, and the braids are too tight, even after asking her not to make it so tight numerous times: but the finished product comes out well and lasts two months. My complaint is; I saw they do lashes and against my better judgement… I was considering getting mine done but was unsure at first. After some coaching from the stylist that insisted they would look great i said wth… Besides only Twenty five bucks??? Red Flag… It quickly became apparent that she had absolutely no idea what she was doing… I thought they looked F*&ked up but they were already done so I left… got them done on Monday night by Wed Morning they had completely fallen off … didn’t she say they were gonna last three weeks … didn’t even last three day

I’ve passed Impulse for years and decided to give it a try. I loved the time management system. When I arrived for my appointment my stylist was actually ready for me. I told her what I wanted she agreed to do it and started my hair. I thought we were on the same page about the hair style I wanted. When I checked her progress I was totally surprised. What she did looked nothing like what I asked for. The hair dresser explained that because my hair was blown out I couldn’t get the style I wanted(wish she would’ve told me that before she started my hair). She said it would look fine and for me to get the style I wanted I would have to take out my hair and wash it again. I honestly didnt believe that because my usual hair dresser blows out my hair before she starts to twist it and it comes out just fine. I decided to go with it because she was almost halfway through and it was late at night. That was a big mistake. By time she was done my hair looked awful. I still had to pay for this crappy hair style and then spent the rest of my night taking out the twists she put in my hair. I’m just glad I didn’t ask for a trim

Never going here again. My hairdresser was SUPER rude. I came right on time and she made me wait until she did someone else’s hair which isn’t horrible, but THEN she made me wait while she ate breakfast/lunch and while she chatted with her fellow hairdressers in her chair. I understand taking a lunch break, but you have to schedule that in when you make appointments. You can’t just sit and eat in the middle of an appointment… when customers are waiting for you! Are you kidding me? How unprofessional! Not to mention she acted generally annoyed that I was there despite knowing that I was recommended to her by one of her regular customers. And it doesn’t end there. She made me buy a hair net — a supply that she should have or should buy on her own — and she did not deduct it from my total costs. Sure it only cost $ 2, but it’s the principle of the thing. And then she seemed to be running late for something and asked if I knew how to thread hair!!! And of course, the hairstyle I came out with was not quite the hairstyle I wanted — she blamed the hair I brought and not herself of course. Her rushed work shows. It’s one month into my hairstyle and my braids are already falling out. My hair looks so messy I have to get it re-done a month early! Maybe my hairdresser was one bad hairdresser in the whole place. Or maybe she was just having a bad day. But it costs me about $ 200 each time I get my hair done so GOINGTOIMPULSEFELTLIKETHROWING A LOTOFMONEYDOWNTHEDRAIN.

Impulse Salon is what I would consider a gem owing to the fact that on Jamaica avenue your choice for a great salon is pretty limited. The building itself is home to a 2 floor salon, café in the basement, barbershop and a recently expanded Nail Spa. Overall not too shabby. I’ve been a client since 2000 and I’ve seen a few of the ladies there. My current stylist Ayanna is amazing, I know many can relate when I say that trusting your stylist 100% is very necessary and I trust her. I can always go to her and tell her I want to try something new and she knows exactly what to give me. Ever the professional Ayanna is always on her game, just last week I went in for a perm and she gave me the most amazing cut that would help me grow out my short cut while still being stylish. I left very happy and got tons of compliments. My wait, as I’ve read in the other reviews wasn’t at all bad, after going there for years I’ve narrowed it down to not going on weekends. If you have no other time and you must go, Ayanna works really fast and still gives you the attention you need. I would also suggest going to Hokie, Nicole, Sandra, Jackie, Monette Sonya and Sachana. My gripe is them being late, it’s not always a constant thing but I’ve learned to set my schedule just in case. I use to go to Tameika another excellent stylist but she’s no longer there. Check it out they’re a pretty good place, they do just about everything you can think of whether it’s Perms, Cuts, Dreads, Weaves, Natural Hair care, braids or just your every two weeks wash n treat. I can say the staff is very accommodating and professional give them a call and make an appointment 718−298−6200 or you can walk in which I’ve found works when you have a hair emergency :)

I went there on a friend’s recommendation because I got tired of driving to Brooklyn and fighting for parking. I was used to waiting 5 – 7 hours before my hair was done at another location. Sonia was my first at Impulse. She was quick and I didn’t have to wait. So when I looked at Unilocal and saw the comments for Hokie, I made an appointment. She was about an hour late and I was groing impatient, almost regretting that I made the appointment. But she showed up, I sat in her chair and I was very pleased with her skills. I got a perm and curl. My hair was so straight, so soft and every hair was in place. To this day, my perm is still holding up. I recommend this salon for various reasons. I like keeping our dollars in the community. I like the restaurant in the basement(good food!). I like the proximity to transportation and parking. I like the shops on Jamaica Ave. I just wished the staff smiled more and made me feel as if my patronage was appreciated instead of feeling like they were doing me a favor.

Impulse in jamaica is where I go. its actually very much out of the way for me, but I like the way my hair looks when I leave and I get tons of compliments. I would recommend you use Tameika, but make sure u have an appointment with her. She is very popular and as such very busy. Minor tip. BEPATIENT, some people have been known to get frustrated.

I used to go there all the time for weaves. Hokie is okay, But shes always backed up. Sonia is horrible. She did a bad weave once. I went back to her to dye my hair. I wanted it dyed black with auburn streaks. I asked her to use foil. She didn’t. I told her not to use hair bleach… She did any way… So she used the cap and the whole top of my hair came out white. Then she said this is the new style, I didn’t ask for this. Then she suggested I wait two weeks to add the other color. She has no idea what she’s doing. I had to keep my hair up and add black gel to it just so you can’t tell my hair was white. And my hair started falling out. I did my own hair for one year and now it’s back down my back… But still thin. I am now on a hair vitamin. My dermatologist said she robbed my hair of all natural nutrients. I don’t reccomend this place. Not even for a pony tail. p. S the one star… is for Hokie.

This is the largest black owned beauty salon in Queens(perhaps NY?) It has two floors of hair dressers and a restaurant in the basement. There is also a barber next door of the same name. I’ve been going here for 2 years now and I love the way my hair comes out every time I go. My stylist is Tameika and she is great at cuts and styling. You can get great weaves, braids, dreads and short cut styles here but you may have to deal with a long wait. They do take walk-ins but I would always call prior to going in. Highly recommended for African American and Hispanic hair.
