Service and Food were both great. Unfortunately the air conditioner wasn’t working. Luckily they had some outside seating. Server suggested A Touch of Germany Special. I wasn’t disappointed. Sauerbarten, Pork Roast, Beef Roast, Red Cabbage and German Fried Potatos were great. Inside really needs some updating. Would have given four stars for food alone. Two stars on décor alone. So three stars on average. Will try again if in area.

Love to eat here. Atmosphere is quaint and cozy — reminds you of going to Grandma’s house — that is, if your grandma is German. Wonderful dishes with plenty of Gluten-Free options available. Great wine list, as well. Seems to be a hot-spot for couples, families and lunch meetings with friends and colleges. A little hard to find, the first time around, as it isn’t on a main road, but once you get there, you will definitely find your way back!

My wife and I came here looking for a twist in food, a romantic atmosphere and just something it of the ordinary. WEWERESATISFIED!!! I had the«taste of Germany» plate and was a large portion that did not upset. My wife had the«veal Cordón blue» this was huge and tasted amazing. The atmosphere was quiet and dimly lit but was outdated. It was a good thing though because when Helmüt the owner came around and spoke with us with his German accent, you could tell he was living his dream. Helmüt came back for a complimentary«dessert» shot with us to finish off our meal. HIGHLYRECOMMEND!

I just love coming to Da Stein Haus… The dining experience is truly a LOST art… Exquisite food complimented with great wine… Finished with a complimentary after dinner shot from the owner Helmut. We had the Jaeger Schnitzel with all the German extras… Delicious!!! If you want cheap fast food stay away… This is dining at its finest… Great meal courses and conversation!

I love going there because it reminds me of my German grandmother’s house. Most of the time, the food is excellent. Come here knowing that dining is an experience. You will not leave quickly. I prefer the Wiener Schnitzel. I have also tried their pork chop(a little too salty for my taste.) I wouldn’t go there in the summer because the food is so heavy that you might feel sick afterwards. We generally frequent this place when the weather is cooler.

Kitschy environment is a good description. The fabulous charm comes from the amazing collection of authentic German steins, wines and other décor. If you like authentic German fare, you will love this place. If you are new to the cuisine, you are in for a treat.

It always stuns me again when I come here and everything is perfect. Don’t judge from the outside– this is a five star meal! Very authentic but other great American options too. This is hands down the best restaurant I know of in the Midwest. The prices are very reasonable. Cooked to order. And the owner is always here to make it feel very special. Even if you think you have tasted red cabbage and potatoes, these will blow you away! Everything is good. Must try!

Kitschy environment with good food and service. A bit overpriced but worth a stop if only once. I think when the elderly karaōke started we knew we were in a unique place. Everyone was very sweet and attentive. Service was great. Food was slow, but we enjoyed the pace. Food was very good. Escargot was excellent. They had a great wine selection. Main course was a sampler and very good. Excellent red cabbage. Wife had a seafood crêpe, it was a bit heavy and gloppy, not what comes to mind when you think crêpe. The food was heavy though, it’s German! It sticks to your ribs. Couldn’t eat dessert. Too full. The meal cost $ 80 pre-tip. A bit pricey.

After traveling in Germany for two weeks I came home and decided I had to try this place out. Upon walking in, I felt very comfortable, like your in an old German cottage! The atmosphere here was great. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food. It was bland and took quite some time to make it to the table, although I know it didn’t sit in the kitchen waiting to be brought to us because it was hot so that was good. The food seemed overpriced compared to the quality. I have only been here once, so I can’t complain too much, and am willing to give it a second try.

We just selected this Restarant because of Unilocal reviews and all we can say is SUPER! Great service, great German food. They have many other types of food. We could not eat all our food and the owner had our leftovers packed up with some extra gravy so our leftovers would not be dry. WOW! Do not see service like this in too many places. We live in IL and have been to Germany and this place brought back some good memories of our trip to Europe. Wish we could have tried dessert but too full. We will have to stop on the way home.

I have never written a Unilocal review before but this place has forced me to download the app and write! I am a major fan of German food and have tried many places around the country but this place beats them all. The owner — who is also the chef — cooks everything fresh when you order and is actually German. None of this«German in name only» types of places that use canned or boxed food. This is the real deal. Not only is the food delicious but the environment is one of a kind. You feel like you are eating and sitting at a family members dining room table and are treated as such. Everyone there is a friend and is the most welcoming people you will meet in Jeff City. I went twice in the same weekend it was so good and such a good time. I would suggest this place to anyone and is by far a hidden gem in Jeff City and most likely the Midwest.

Had a fantastic experience at this restaurant. Food and atmosphere were excellent. Waitress even sat with us and told us the story of Helmut coming to the U.S. and opening the restaurant.

Dinner was excellent! I highly recommend the German sampler. Wonderful atmosphere, and our waitress was great. We were both out of town, and excited to find some authentic German cuisine in the middle of Missouri. We’ll be back.

The restaurant area has a great and unique atmosphere, and an authentic German chef. The food is hearty and very, very good. The restaurant isn’t always open though, so call ahead before going. The bar area is just a bar. The restaurant though, is one of a kind, especially for Jeff City.

This place is so wonderfully warm and inviting! We arrived a little late for dinner, but the nicest gentleman(I belive he was the owner) had no problem with us eating in the dining area, even though the kitchen had to stay open a bit later. There were four of us, and everyone loved what they had… everything was excellent! My daughter got the Chicken Kiev and loved it. The house special was a slow roasted ham hock with sauerkraut and potatoes… so delicious! Those potatoes are truly amazing. The german beer on tap was sooo good, and the dark one in the bottle that my husband drank was also terrific… Sorry I can’t remember their names but they were recommended by that very nice gentleman. lol. We only get to Jefferson City every once in a great while to visit family, but when we do, THIS is the place we always want to go to while we’re there!

Do yourself a favor, don’t eat here. Well, maybe only if you have been starving all day and there was nothing else better. It’s overpriced as well.

The food was excellent but the service was lacking… but not at the fault of the one bartender who was trying her best to take care of a larger than expected crowd on a Friday night. Wish they could have had an extra person working the bar or waiting tables. On the plus side, the karaōke was hilarious and fun, the jaeger schnitzel was one of the best ever, and the selection of German beers was great! I would go again but probably eat dinner on the restaurant side and then hit the bar for karaōke.

Love this place! Stopped for a Saturday night dinner after an MU football game. Everything was great. Had the Veal stuffed cabbage rolls, German sampler entrée and peach flambé for dessert. Thanks Helmut and staff for a lovely dinner.

It’s like stepping into a German household and sitting down to a nice home cooked meal. The restaurant leans towards the older crowd, we didn’t go to the bar area because there was a private party and it was closed off. The wait staff was very helpful in suggesting good German import beers and explaining the different food. Food 5⁄5 Service: 5⁄5 Décor & Atmosphere: 4⁄5

Gemütlichkeit! Who else but the Germans would have so many words with so many compounds. At least in this case it ends well, because it means-loosely translated-a feeling of well-being. Ach ya! What a great lead-in to a review of Das Stein Haus. In an age where just the thought of German food sends some people out of the room suffering from a calorie attack, Helmut Steiner hangs on with a traditional blend of well known German classics, and arguably the best Kassler Ribschen we’ve had in a decade. He admits to having it smoked to his specifications, but the rest is his secret. The result is a Kassler that is moist and perfectly tasty. The potatoes have been mentioned in other reviews and they are quite tasty as well. The weisswurst on my plate was excellent too. It came as part of the German sampler, which tends to mix too many flavors together and as a result suffers from it. If you’re going, take apart the various meats and try one by itself. You’ll have a better appreciation of the meal. It’s worth noting that the wine list isn’t complete and if you don’t see what you’re looking for ask Helmut because there’s more elswhere on the premises! I might also add his pricing is super reasonable. As with many a German meal, we had absolutely no room for a whole list of flambé deserts, and settled for a coffee and a little of the orange liquor which I think is house-made and was vaguely reminiscent of Tang. But the finale of Danzig Goldwasser was sehr Gut! Enjoy. And note that this cusine is rapidly vanishing from the US as the old Germans and their cultural foodie heritage are disappearing from the landscape. Auf Wiedersehen.

Ok, first off… a comment or two… yes Schnitzels are abundant… It’s a German Restaurant!!! Not sure who in Germany would call it Der Steinhaus. It’s Das Steinhaus(basic grammar lesson… Der — Masculine, Die — feminine, Das — gender neutral — for those of you who care… lol …if you are not sure stop by and ask Helmut the owner). But yes doesnt matter what its called the food is good. I am not sure about the pricey drink comment since the cocktails and glass of wine I had were same as many other places… $ 4 – 5. Try Sapphires if you want expensive drinks. But I can understand it is Jeff City and not St Louis so cheaper is better(inst cheaper better everywhere?) Speaking of drinks and wine. Yes there is a great selection of wine and if you are not sure trust Helmut to make a good suggestion. I had a glass of Dornfelder Trocken Rheinhessen at his suggestion. Hey you’re in a German resturaunt have some German wine! I ended up getting a bottle and taking home. Hey, where are you gonna find German wine in JC if not at a German Restaurant? I was sitting at the bar and had the Jagerschnitzel with potatoes, mixed vegetables and red cabbage at the recommendation of the bartender. But just so you know you are allowed to have the Jagerschnitzel if you’re not sitting at the bar… it’s ok. Wow the schnitzel was fantastic. Traditional German food — very good. Turns out Helmut is also the chef. Will be back to try the Beef Rouladen and the Roast Pork Loin sometime… maybe next time the bartender will remember to serve me some bread…(or the newly trained ‘tender will take care of me-haha) Finally, I cannot agree more with the person who said«with such a unique place like Das Steinhaus, why would anyone go to a chain eatery?»
