Hemps is a bit overwhelming at first, maybe it’s because we went on a weekend. Lots of people close to a display case of meat and you have to keep track of who’s next. It may be easier just to take a number. Luckily, the gentleman who served us was very patient to my husband and I who were new to there and it took us awhile to decide how much of this and that we needed. I will definitely be back as the food is organic and fresh. Maybe I’ll just phone in my order next time :)

This place is AWESOME! First of all this place has been there for 165 years(since 1849) and they like to keep it in the family(5 generations of butchers), so trust me, they know their meat. When I need fresh meat — this place is my place to go. Any size, any cut, any type. You want half or quarter of cow? You got it! And they will slice it for you any way you want! How about fresh chicken, pork or ground sausage? Here it is! Or perhaps you are looking for some rabbit? Well, here you go! Cows tongue, heart, kidneys and liver? You name it — they got it! They also carry small things like McCutcheon’s products(pickled goods & jams), bbq sauces, bread/hotdog rolls, eggs, milk, butter, some crab meat, potatoes(the kind for making baked potatoes) and of course cheese and cold cuts. If you need help or advice — these guys are always willing to help. I just got done with a 5-lb slow-cooked brisket in a cast iron dutch oven, smothered in home-made rub and simmered in a red wine sauce and boy-oh-boy was it to die for! Next on the menu — slow-roast chuck with caramelized onions, carrots and potatoes! Hemps meat — see ya soon! ;)

So lucky to have this place close to home! They have local and grass-fed meat. They have almost any type of meat you would be looking for. Fast service and always pleasant. Love that they take call ahead orders and have it ready for you to pick up! They also carry a number of McCutchen’s products and dairy products which makes«one stop shopping» easier since Brunswick doesn’t have a grocery store anymore. Their meat also tastes better than any meat you can buy in the store. Especially the bacon, steak cuts and pork chops!

Once a year, for the past many years, a friend and I split a cow that we get from a local farmer, so I don’t regularly buy beef from a store. The exception to this is when my half runs out before it’s ordering time. Then, Hemps is my go-to place. In fact, I’m heading there this afternoon to pick up an order I phoned in.

This place has been around as long as I have been alive, and my parents have been patrons ever since then. Super fresh and local meats(hell the cow pasture out back should be indication of that) They will even butcher/slaughter your livestock for you(sorry non meat eaters).for a fee of course. This is just a taste of home I always stop in at when visiting my mom now who lives in Jefferson. You can also get sides and quarters of beef if you have allot of freezer room. Make sure you pick up some sliced country ham for sandwiches and wash it down with a cool iced tea.

local butcher shop that has been here as long as i can remember. i’m not much for the meat myself, mind you, being a non-carnivore and all, but i can remember that it was great and am told it still is. my nose would lead me to believe that this is true. additionally, they do have good oysters. they also are vendors at the frederick fair and at the saturday markets at the fair grounds. i witnessed their bbq beef and ham sandwiches just this past weekend, and though i can’t verify that they tasted delicious, they certainly looked delicious, if you are into that kind of thing.
