A SALUTETOVETERANS! The new Johns Creek Veteran’s Memorial is located on approximately four acres in Newtown Park. As you enter the plaza, there are several flags that represent each branch of service. These flags are flanked by the US flag and the City of John’s Creek Flag. The area is handicapped accessible and has nice concrete trails leading to the various memorials. Each stone memorial commemorates a major conflict beginning with World War I and concluding with Afghanistan. The memorials include the name of the war, the number of years engaged and an image of the campaign service medal that is superimposed over images from that particular conflict. When looking at the memorials, look closely in order to appreciate what the memorial represents. In front of the memorials, there are memorial pavers and there are memorial benches that allow you to sit and quietly reflect. On the grounds there is also a rather large gazebo with additional seating that offer privacy as well. The ceremony to honor this year’s veterans took place yesterday and as I was looking for activities for today, I realized I had missed it. I will know to start making plans much earlier next year. Don’t feel as if you have to wait until next year to appreciate this memorial plaza. It is beautiful and a great teaching tool for children(especially those who may have lost a parent during military conflict). The large red and white floral wreath was a beautiful touch.
