As much as I prefer the specialized local hobby shops, these seem to be going the way of the dodo. Hobbytown USA in Johnson City is a locally owned franchisee of the Hobbytown chain of shops, and it caters to a wide range of hobbyists. Their selection ranges from board games to model rockets, model trains (mostly the smaller scales — little O and even less G) to radio controlled cars and aircraft. They also have a good collection of higher end toys. The best thing about the place is the staff, who are really knowledgeable about the stuff they sell and are eager to help. They just moved to a new location on Roan St. and are still in the process of setting up the store, but it’s already improved the train and r/​c sections. Highly recommended!
