There are things to like about Grandma Millie’s: The location at the airport. The fact that it’s really the only bakery in town. The cute restaurant. Unfortunately, their food is really sub-par. I ordered a strawberry-rhubarb pancakes for breakfast one day. The pancakes were way overcooked and the sauce looked pepto-bismoly. My husband ordered an egg dish which was fine, but bland. We also got some cookies as a gift, and they also weren’t all that great. If you’re in Johnstown looking for breakfast, go to Forever Young’s on Main Street(delicious and affordable) or if you’re looking for cookies, go to Wemple and Edick’s. Both are considerably better.

Grandma Millie’s Bakery is a hidden jewel in Johnstown, New York, about three hours east of Rochester. The setting is unique. This quaint restaurant sits well off the street on a small private airport strip. Just outside the restaurant door are several small private planes that reminds one of days past. The small airport is running and open, and the planes come and go quite frequently. To get to grandma Millie’s, you have to be going there. This is not a place that you will just happen to drive in to. If you don’t know its there, you’re certain to pass it. The restaurant has 6 to 8 tables and lots of paraphernalia reminiscent of bakeries in times gone by. The smell of the cakes, pies and special treats being prepared is really comforting. No one who walks in the door is a stranger at Millies. Everyone is a special guest of the restaurant. The lunch menu is limited to 6 to 7 sandwiches and a few other offerings. The sandwiches we had were exceptional. The bread was homemade, the deli meats were not processed and the toppings and sauces were made in house. This had to be the best Turkey Swiss Melt I have ever had. The same applies for the special macaroni salad. The Ham Swiss Melt my guest had looked awesome also. Service was great as well as our chocolate chip cookies and cupcake desserts. Place Grandma Millie’s on your bucket list if ever in the Johnstown area. You’ll be a fan also!

Nine out of ten pilots can’t be wrong! Grandma Millie’s Bakery is a great place to call to order a delicious, made-from-scratch cake, cookies, or any other confectionary delight for your special occasion, but it’s also a great place to visit for breakfast or lunch, as well. Located off State Route 67 at the Fulton County airport, Grandma Millie’s can be easy to miss, but once you find it, it’s a lot of fun to sit at the counter and watch the planes come and go. Playing up to the location, the décor features a great deal of aviation-related items in addition to family photos of the McCormicks. J and I have made this a brunch destination on a couple of weekends and have always been happy with our food selections. My personal favorite breakfast item is Millie’s mush, which scrambles together eggs, sausage, and home fries, covered in both cheese and sausage gravy. You’ll definitely want to come hungry because I’ve never been able to finish the whole thing in one setting. The mush, like pretty much every breakfast entrée, comes with toast made from their homemade bread. My personal favorite is the cheddar onion rye and I always ask for some of their homemade apple butter to spread on top of it — no processed Smuckers jelly here! The plate of cookies brought to the table after ordering and before your meal arrives are an especially nice touch, especially since the great scents of the place make your stomach rumble the moment you walk in. The service is very friendly and quite speedy. Despite my best efforts that leave me heavily caffeinated for the remainder of the day, I’ve never been able to finish a whole cup of coffee before a server comes around and offers to top me off. To add to your coffee, they’ll bring you your choice of cream of milk in a small pitcher.

We were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a wonderful bakery and café at the local airport. I had a huge delicious cheap breakfast with the best breakfast potatoes I’ve ever had. We left with some pastries and cookies for later!!! Cool restaurant that was featured on that cake boss guy reality show. There’s lots of neat airplanes to watch takeoff and land. They park 10 yards away!
