If you’re looking something other than chain restaurants, this is a nice place. Lots of atmosphere and lots of menu choices. I had the Great Grand Pappy – who’d have thought of putting a burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches? Amazing in its simplicity and delicious too.

The pizza was quite good, with lots of pepperoni and cheese, with a crust that was cooked the right amount. But on this particular visit, there was some kind of party going on and they had a singer in the restaurant. The singer was too loud and not very good; at one point he played some Metallica! But the most major complaint was that the men’s bathroom was in deplorable condition. Pretty surprising for a restaurant that otherwise looks pretty decent.

Pappy’s definitely has a hootenanny feel, but more like a hootenanny after a western shootout. Imagine sitting in an electric chair waiting for the sweet release of death, that is how I would describe the seating. All things considered pappy’s is a great little watering hole that’s fun for the whole family. Heck, half price pizza on Tuesdays has been feeding my family for years. Sure, you don’t get free refills on the drinks but the joy of getting a second schooner really lights up the kids faces. The fun zone is very entertaining I won my wife a teddy bear in the claw game on our first date and years later, it’s where I proposed. The jukebox is always pumping some great tunes too! Slow Ride by Foghat? I think yes:)

Simply put, I love their pizza! I’ve being going to Pappy’s since I was a teen. I no longer live in the area but always appreciate the great pizza when I visit. The wooden booths and 70s décor may be dated but it makes dining more fun… gotta love the jtown nostalgia…

Okay. This place has its haters. All places do. And while I do agree with at least some of the points that are made in other reviews(very outdated atmosphere, uncomfortable seats, not-so-good lighting) its just not enough for me to give this place less than four stars, considering how awesome the food is. Excellent pizzas. Amazing strombolis, especially the buffalo chicken Stromboli. My wife loves the spaghetti, and the garlic toast is never a disappointment. This place has been around since my parents were kids, and many aunts and uncles worked there as teens, making pizza directly behind that glass divider that you see. For such a long standing piece of Johnstown, dishing out much of the same food they did when I was a kid, it’s hard not to enjoy it. Also … Pick up a beer battered blooming onion. Delicious. And hard to find around here.

I get the feeling of being in a nineteenth century hootenanny when I entered this establishment. Don’t get me wrong, I love the styles of olde, however there is also a sense of comfort that should go along with it. The wood seats were very uncomfortable, the light posts were atrocious, one light bulb was burned out, and one of the chandeliers looks as if it’s about to fall on someone. Despite the outdated décor, the wait staff was helpful and the large windows into the kitchen allowed me to see the process of how the pizzas are made here. The pizza was a bit tough to cut into, and I can see why they give you a steak knife before bringing out the pizza. The ingredients tasted fresh and it carried the taste that defines a classic pizza. The thick crust was very nice — chewy but not too tough. The wait time was not long, despite the half-off sale and the dinner crowd filling these hard seats. I give the pizza a good mark, but they could do something to make a more comfortable establishment without taking away from the classic appearance.

I love this place. I have been coming here my entire life. The food is so good, the best thing is the pizza. Yeah it’s a little dark and out dated but the food is out of this world. Nice big menu with lots to choose from.

Great little place, service was excellent and prices were very reasonable. I had the Great Pulled Pork, two grilled cheese sandwiches stacked on top of each other with pulled pork in between… it was so good! Came with a side of old school Mac & Cheese! I’d give it 5 stars but the fried cauliflower was very oily and the men’s bathroom was pretty scary.

I went in with my family and what a JOKE. Our table wasn’t clean when out waitress sat us there. Our food didn’t come out together. My brother’s pizza was hardly done. The sauce came from a jar and the pasta came from a box. I could have made that at home. All the vegetables in the calzone were canned and it was loaded with gooey cheese and was very greasy. But The wings we ordered were a good price and they were crispy. The BBQ sauce was too sweet and heavy. Overall it was just pretty gross. We won’t be coming back.

I was in town for a UPJ college visit with my son and this place was the perfect stop for dinner. Great pizza, friendly service. Plus it is locally owned and popular with the locals.

While the menu has evolved through the years, Pappy’s is much the same as when it opened 40 years ago in Johnstown. It is a classic that takes me back to my teen years each time we visit family here. The pizza is great, and they have awesome weekly specials. A great place to take kids since there is a little game room and a big window where kids can watch the pizza being made. Service has been iffy through the years but has improved greatly and is now really good. Go to Pappy’s, sit in the same booths that have been there since 1974 and enjoy a fun piece of Johnstown tradition.

This whole place smells like the bathroom. Disgusting! My pizza came with a dirty plate and tasted like nothing… spice didn’t even help. I would not recommend eating here unless you lack your crucial senses that are necessary to enjoy what you’re eating.

Pappy’s was a staple as a child growing up in Johnstown and we are so happy that are kids get to enjoy nearly the same exact restaurant and atmosphere that we did. Old time charm and delicious pizza and Stromboli. The servers treat you like old friends. The kids love the arcade and window into the kitchen to watch the pizzas being made.

One place to try in Johnstown is Pappy’s. The food is always delicious. We usually get the stromboli. Always fresh and never a disappointment. The garlic bread is to die for. The garlic sticks are about the same. We have tried different items off the menu. On Sundays, they have the all you can eat breasted chicken and spaghetti. If you leave this place hungry, then it’s your own fault. Don’t trust the iced tea is my only warning.

I had a calzone from pappy’s and was very disappointed in the fillings. I asked for extra ham and paid for the extra topping and to only find that I would only get about 2 oz. of ham in a 1ft. Calzone. Flavor was great but the preparing of it was very poor and the marina was scorched and had a burnt flavor. Pappy you need to step it up!

This place is not very clean, very loud, tables are cramped, and if you sit in the garden room, you will either freeze or roast, depending on the weather outside. Pizza could be a lot better. Bland. The only things I’ve had good here are the cauliflower and the salads. Do not get the fried chicken. Very greasy.

Been here on multiple occasions, but the best night to go it Stromboli night. Nice sized Stromboli for a really reasonable price. I’ve had a range of items on the menu, from the traditional spaghetti to the standard fare of a bacon cheeseburger. The spaghetti, if i remember correctly is all you can eat, but there was enough on my first plate to fulfill my need for pasta for the week. Seating in this place is great, even if you have a big party they can accommodate. There isn’t any music playing overhead, but that’s because you need to pick it. There is a jukebox on the wall that needs you to just put that money in there and press it’s buttons. If you are bored while waiting for your food, take your pick as to what can keep you busy. Try the fun-house mirror by the bathrooms to get a different perspective on life. Go into the game room and play a video game or put your quarter into the Fred Flintstone egg machine for a mystery prize. Or, the best one, go back to the kitchen and get a glimpse of the chefs preparing your food. Atmosphere here is a bit dark, but I would suppose that is because of the dark wood used in the interior, you want a lighter experience sit in the sunroom.

Hit or miss, The pizza is good and so is the fried cauliflower, but the rest of the menu lacks consistency, sometimes it’s good and sometimes not so much. You take your chances if you order anything besides pizza.

Pappy’s is just too good to resist. Half price pizza Tuesdays cannot be beat, and $ 2.75 strombolis on Wednesday are always a great quick dinner. The service can sometimes be so-so, but it’s nothing too awful. The food more than makes up for it.

This place has been around since I was a kid. I have great memories of going here for my birthday and getting my birthday«kit»: An old timey 1890’s barbershop quartet-type straw hat(actually styrofoam), a paper bow tie, and a paper Pappy mustache. The place is still there. They’ve added a sun-porch dining room addition many years ago. Took out the video games(dang it!!!). The«player» piano is still there although I don’t know if it’s still used… and yes, the wacky fun house mirror is still there. You can still watch the dudes in the kitchen making the pizzas through a giant plate glass window, but they’ve put in new pizza making gizmos in there and it’s not as nice an experience as it used to be. What are those new giant contraptions??? Anyway, maybe I’m just used to living on the West Coast but the food there is way cheap. Not mind-blowing quality, but a typical family pizza/pasta place. Iceberg lettuce salads and decent pizza. Their sandwiches are good too. They still have their half-price pizza Tuesdays and I think they have a stromboli day. And you can’t beat that painting of the Last Supper that they still have hanging on the fireplace inside.
