After several years of the best ice cream and yogurt, it’s disappointing to report a drop in quality at The Meadows. Recently visited the location in Johnstown three times in one week just to verify that their tasty ice cream/yogurt is no more. The idea is a limited number of new and different flavors every day but now those flavors are about half as prominent as they were before. As an example, the previously wonderful tea berry is now only identifiable by the color of the ice cream. Very sad. Even worse, when we tried to discuss our findings with the manager to see if there might be a problem with the mixing equipment, he basically told us «people complain about everything» and dismissed us. So, we will stick with the location in Ebensburg and hope for better from them.

The best soft serve I’ve ever had! It’s like silk on your tongue, so thick it seems to defy gravity on your spoon, and yet melts away in your mouth soft and slow leaving you wanting more and more. And when you’ve finally had your fill, a subtle smile of contentment appears on your face. A true ice cream sensation you must experience for yourself.

I just made cream puff shells and the coconut vanilla custard to fill them, the dark chocolate butter cream frosting takes five minutes to make. Won’t hubby be thrilled when he comes home, but while making these I kept thinking about The Meadows frozen custard, not really but I wanted to envision you all drooling over your keyboards. The Meadows is a very small franchise that claims to be the first to serve frozen custard, since 1950. For over fifty nine years they are using the same family recipe at all nineteen locations. The original Meadows is still family run in Duncansville, PA. it Is considered a tourist trap and still has lines of people waiting for the ice cold frozen custard. This location that I am reviewing has a small inside area for eating your treat and a drive through window, they also feature an 18 hole champion miniature golf course. They are open year around and have been voted best of Johnstown two years in a row. Each day they offer two flavors of their creamy frozen custard in addition to chocolate or vanilla. The vanilla yogurt is nonfat and no sugar added and all the flavored yogurts are nonfat. They have a nice variety of Italian Ices, sundaes including peanut butter and hot fudge, strawberry shortcake, banana splits, floats, milkshakes, swirls, fluffs and pints to go. On a recent trip to our home town, we pass The Meadows several times per day. My Mom has been in the hospital more than she has been out this year and in the most recent month she is just not eating the pureed food they are serving her. I think of a zillion different things that I can take to her in luring her to eat. The Meadows has been my number one go to place and Mom loves the thick milkshakes and swirls but her absolute favorite is the root beer float. Hubby and I have to have our treats as well and my favorite is the custard with peanut butter and hot fudge. Okay now you can wipe off your keyboards and don’t forget your chin!
