I travel around Pa, Ohio, and WV a lot and have eaten subs at over 100 places. Quit simply, Tony’s Subs are the best there is!

So it just dawned on me that I’ve never written a review for Tony’s. Goodness, simply the VERY best in Johnstown. I’m very biased when it comes Tony’s…I grew up living right down the street. When I long for home… I think of Tony’s. Homemade 22″ hard sub-rolls, delicious deli meats, homemade pepperoni rolls & square pizza with homemade sauce. Who could ask for more?!! Our favorites: –The super Regular sub with traditional coldcuts & provolone(it HAS to be provolone… not American cheese) with onions, Italian sweet & hot peppers flakes, extra pickles & oil –The super Italian sub made with hard salami, ham, provolone, Italian sweet & hot peppers and Italian dressing… nothing compares to this! –The Regular Garbage Sandwich… this is simply a coldcut sandwich on an Italian roll. BUT it is the BEST coldcut sandwich on an Italian roll you will ever have in your life!!! Order it with provolone, onions, hot pepper flakes, oil & mayonnaise. Heaven. Yes…my love for Tony’s is deep :)

I MISS this place! In the early 1980’s, I lived just around the corner on Derby Street, just across from Dively’s, and I was a daily visitor to Tony’s! I loved the family… They always made me feel very welcome and took great care of me! Miss those crunchy rolls, and it was the first place I ever ate where they put pickles on hoagies… Loved the cheese hoagies! Love you all!!! Michael

Tony’s Sub Shop was the first sub I had in Johnstown and I always compare everyone else’s to Tony’s. I like their hot baked honey ham sub but they have a variety including regular and it comes in a super size, talk about long! But what I’ve been recently become a fan of is their macaroni salad. YUM! It’s more on the sweet side than the tangy. I now always buy a small container when I pick up subs from Tony’s. They also have bottled drinks and snack sized chips and homemade desserts. The parking is tight but I’ve always been able to find a stall in the small lot.

Some of the best subs in town. If you’re a fan of hot peppers, than the hot pepper relish on your sub is a MUST!

Hubby used to love Clark’s subs and I was always partial to Em’s subs. You do know what a sub is don’t you? Clark’s have changed hands within the family since the original owner retired, ugh, hubby no longer cares for Clark’s subs. Subs are a Johnstown staple, a little like homemade pierogies, pigs(stuffed cabbage) and Coney Island hot dogs are. Every town has their favorite local must haves, be it lobster rolls in NE or cheesesteaks in Philly. A sub, submarine sandwich is usually shared with several others, usually. It is one long loaf of bread and like the cheesesteak, the bread is very important. For a sub it should be crusty, fresh baked and worth it’s own weight in flavor. Em’s does still have the best bread for the sub. This bread is at least two feet long and can weigh up to two pounds or more once filled with your choices of ham, salami, different cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onions and possibly peppers. Then it is normally drizzled with just oil or oil and vinegar. A great sub will add herbs to this. I skip all of this because I am a lover of mayo and mustard on my burgers and sandwiches. Tony’s bakes their own rolls and breads and thanks to Unilocal I now found them! They make the best sub we have had in years! I would love to hand them an Em’s roll to start with, but we each got a super sub made the way we like it. A super sub has double meat, cheese and veggie toppings, but they layer it all twice! I ate mine for three days and hubby still ended up helping me. It was outstanding! He gets double ham and white american cheese with oil. I get ham, hard salami, swiss and longhorn cheese. We both get the onions but skip the peppers. The store is old and cram packed of really neat stuff. I am providing the links where you can read his story of how his father started the business way back when.
They make two homemade soups per day and sold out quickly. They have a small deli and bakery section of local bakers. The 22″ super sub was a double load deal at $ 12.99 each. They also sell hot subs, burgers and sandwiches. Tony’s is my new go to for a great sub! Thank you Tony and thank you Unilocal

Deli, does subs & sandwiches on excellent crusty homemade rolls. Hot sandwiches as well. Cons: BUSY. Recommend calling ahead for order. Also, for some God-unknown reason they put french fries on their SALADS. Yuck.
