My wife likes this place. I think it’s ok but a little small. I get the impression they are trying to cram a lot of art stuff in a small space but what do I know, I’m the science person and my wife is the artistic person. Either way, it is great that we have an art gallery in a city the size of Joplin. It is very apparent they have put a lot of thought and effort into all they have at this place. It is a good place to go and visit, even for those of us who may not understand most of it.

I am an artist in Southwest Missouri and must say that Spiva is very community minded, supportive and involved with local artists, and a great place to experience art! I am thankful to have a gallery/museum of this quality and caliber so close to where I live. Yes their building is small by some standards but the remodel they recently completed added another exhibition space(three total), larger bathrooms, and a lovely gift shop. Their exhibitions are diverse and varied, using local, national, and even international artists(I’ve seen Picaso and Chihuly there) with many different styles and subject matter. They also offer art classes for children and adults. I suggest you stop by for some«culture» next time you are in Joplin… just not on a Monday, they are closed on Mondays.

For a city the size of Joplin, this is a great little museum. I enjoy going in to see the various exhibits throughout each year. I would love to see this museum/gallery grow and encompass a greater part of our community, however. At times it does feel very clique-ish and perhaps a little bit elitist, which is so unfortunate! On the other hand, I am not sure how to solve that problem as people who do not have an interest in Art are unlikely to start visiting Spiva in droves… so until then, I’ll just enjoy it!
