Charming, home-spun, welcoming, are only a few words to describe Volcan Mountain Winery. A chilled glass of their rose wine provided the perfect drink for a warm day. We were fortunate to attend a party there(yes, you can plan an event with them), with picnic tables set up in the barrel room, door wide open onto the apple orchard. Nothing to obstruct the view of the vineyards and the mountain, save rows of apple trees. One guest even saw a mule dear trotting by in the orchard. This is charming destination away from San Diego crowds and freeways, a family-run, gem of a place owned by the Hart family, who also own the award-winning Hart Winery in Temecula. Hurry there before it gets too crowded, sip luscious wines, and sit under the arbor, savoring the quiet of the countryside. If you get hungry, head for the Candy Apple Pastry Company, a cozy café serving crepes and sandwiches in the heart of Julian a mere 2 miles up the road. We made a day of it, and it was truly special. Mel, the energetic and well-connected manager will even set you up with a hotel room in town!

One of our favorite wineries in San Diego’s back country. We feel like family(and have a family like relationship with Mel) and just love sitting outside with our dogs and friends enjoying the view and the camaraderie.

This is by far the best winery I have ever been to! Mel needs a 10 star rating. She made me feel so comfortable and she was so educated. We had so much fun. My sister doesn’t even drink wine and mel made her want to and enjoyed some of them. We did the taster of 6 wines. I’m from LA but live in San Diego but I will be back to Julian soon and also visiting the other winery in I believe she said temecula. Do the taster I recommend it! Thanks mel you need a raise !!!

What a pleasant little tasting room right across from the orchard! $ 10 gets you six pours of three whites and three reds, including two Apple wines. I didn’t find any of them to be particularly enticing and thus didn’t take a bottle home, but it is a splendid addition to an afternoon of Apple picking – and Mel is so darned friendly! I just wish they would expand their refreshment selection to include local Apple juice or cider as well(they currently sell Martinellis).

I wish I could add 6 stars to this rating. Tucked away just outside the hustle of Julian this tasting room for volcan mountain winery is a must stop for every trip we make from SD. We’ve been visiting for the past 5 years as its changed owners and The beautiful Mel has always hosted us with such warmth, it’s as if she’s known us our whole lives. The wine is wonderful, reasonably priced(join their win club!!) and the location is serene. I hope we can continue visiting for the next 50 years!

Beautiful location, decent wine, and outstanding olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette flavors. We were in Julian for the annual Grape Stomp Festa at the winery next door, and decided we needed a break from the crowd and the heat, so we walked down the street to the Volcan Winery. It was charming, and though the tasting room was a little smaller than some others we’ve been to, it was still quite nice and comfortable. The wines were decent. Not the best we’ve had but very drinkable. Try the«Panty Dropper» drink. It is half a glass of their white port, mixed with half a glass of their apple wine. Try the various olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette infusions that they have as well. They’re amazing and would be great for all sorts of cooking, or salad, or snack ideas. We bought the white peach balsamic vinaigrette, the Rosemary infused olive oil, and the basil infused olive oil. Enjoy!

Took an impromptu road trip to Julian and came across Volcan Winery. It is beautiful, quiet, and relaxing. The wines were fantastic. I’d have to say that the Cabernet and the Diego Red were our favorites. But what really made our experience was Mel! From the moment we walked in, she made us feel so welcome. She was very sweet and knowledgeable. We’d come back just for her, but lucky for us, the wine is top notch as well.
