Normally I am not one to generate Unilocal reviews but this unpleasant experience has by far earned its review. Their lucky they even got a star. If you have a pet this is one of the only places that allow animals. How this is great for most individuals to have their pet companion with them it comes with many strings. I could go on to rip apart all the nasty things about the apartments and land layout in general but this is mostly about the poor management that is conducted. 1. They are not listed under the BBB.(My stupid fault for not checking this before renting but I have learned my lesson) 2. Cindy Madden, the property owner, who lives in property in a beautiful house set to the side is known for giving the tenants the go-around. What type of go-around you may ask let’s list them: *Craigslist Ad: The ad is advertised as a lovely 1⁄1 and a kitchenette including laundry facilities on property, cable & internet wifi all for $ 1,050. However this isn’t the case. Cable is super basic(they just upped to dish and is just as crap but We could deal with that), the Internet“wifi” is only receivable down at the«office». Let’s not forget the«onsite laundry facility» which is only two washers and two dryers for the entire property that has 20+ buildings with SIXUNITS per building. This causes major conflict with trying to do laundry. Not only was it majorly expensive but because it was always busy and the rule with no washing past 8pm it was impossible to have clean clothes. *Common Area Repairs: Back in September 2014 one of the washers broke. When we went to pay our rent in Oct 2014 we inquired when the washer would be fixed and Cindy apologized and replied, «By next month». When we moved out in December 2015 the washer STILLWASNTFIXED. This forced us to do laundry elsewhere for the yr. *The pot hole in the driveway: Countless of times the pot hole was filled with cement and within the few weeks of it being filled it would crack worse by all the activity up and down the driveway. This left all sorts of debris on the road and I’ve witnessed a tenant brush away the debris before getting in his car and leaving. Isn’t this the job of the property owner & her maintenance crew? Let’s move on to us moving out in Dec 2015. We didn’t give the proper«20-day notice» that we we’re leaving so they asked us to be out by Nov. 29th so they could have it cleaned And ready for the new tenant to move in on the first. Ok no problem. We were supposed to receive our security deposit a month later(Jan). The mid of Jan, no deposit. We go to Hale Kaloko a few times during the day to speak with Windy, the Propery Manager, she ensured us that we would get it in a week or so. Ok. Feb rolls along and still nothing. I stopped by a few times myself during the day around 1200 – 3:00pm and Windry is not in the office. The paper on the door says she’s probably around the property and to call her. I didn’t possess a cell phone at the time so I left to try again later. A few times after picking my bf up from work we stopped by before 5pm(he gets off at 330pm and works about ten minutes down the hill from Kaloko) again Windy isn’t there. This time my bf calls from his phone, rings and goes to VM. He leaves a vm and never gets a returned phone call. On Feb 8th I emailed Cindy in regards to everything and politely asked her to call us immediately at her convenience. No response. We try going to visit again after my bf finishes work(this time he finished around 12). Same thing. No one in the office but the paper on the door is up. My bf calls, low and behold CINDYPICKSUP. She told him that she was busy in an appointment and would call him back at 2pm that day. No returned phone call ATALL. so I finally called Cindy today and was polite but stern in my greeting and inquiry. I told her that my bf had called weeks ago and she never returned his call, She gives me some lame excuses how she’s been so busy(like I’m supposed to feel sorry for her?) «Oh I’m sorry it’s been crazy busy, you know, and I’m not on island right now and my dog just died.» I love animals and felt bad about that but how does your dog dying affect you returning our security deposit? She goes on to tell me «oh well we have it written out but however we had a few questions.» So I answered her questions as politely as I could because at this point I’m fuming. Basically it was about the carpet and she had sent some letter to us in regards to it. She sent it to our«last known address» because their was no forwarding addy. Uh… our last and first known addresss was there at hale Kaloko. When I called her out on it she had no response. I proceeded to ask her that if she hadn’t received any response from us about the letter inquiry why was no phone call then placed to us for it to be discussed. For Christ sake this is MONEY we’re talking. No one is gonna just be like, «oh well I don’t need my $ 500 deposit» did you think we got the letter and disregarded all that money?! COMPLETEBS

DONOT go to this place or take Windy or Cindy’s word for anything. One person will call you and tell you you’re approved but when you speak to the other its, «oh, yeah we didn’t actually approve you yet.» Also, they will say that they will take your word on how your previous tenant-landlord relationship was– Its all a lie. My old landlord lied and said I owed him a lot of money and that I left the place a mess. I made sure to deep clean a few days before leaving and was completely caught up on rent. Since he has issues with not paying taxes he didn’t want a paper trail, so I had to pay cash. No big deal at the time but when living there became unbearable, from constant diesel fumes entering my house and their many late-night-weekday parties, I had to leave. Now, this place wants me to show paper proof of paying my rent in order to be ‘approved.’ He wanted no paper trail… so, what is it you want to see? The only proof I have are the multiple ATM withdrawals at the times rent was due each month. So even though I was honest with Windy, and she said she’d believe what I said and take what he said with a «grain of salt», she chose to believe the disgruntled opinion of my previous landlord and completely ignore what my other landlord had told her. There are much better options out there people! The ‘apartments’ they showed me was small(def could only have one person there comfortably) and didn’t even have kitchen amenities. Also, they want nearly $ 1,100+ per month… if you charge so much can’t you at least make sure all units have FULL kitchens? I only applied to this place because they’re ‘pet friendly,’ but I’d honestly rather not have a pet to have a real kitchen, real management, & have peace of mind knowing if something breaks that it will get fixed within a reasonable amount of time. Believe what you read about this place. Nothing good can come from a place that’s constantly turning apartments over… think about it, you always have apartments opening up… if it was as good of a place as you try to make it out to be, don’t you think people would stay? –Concerned Citizen.

Do not even THINK about renting here. The repairs are ignored, even the repairs that are crucial for safety and security. Above all, you will have to kick, scream and fight for the refund of your security deposit. We are in the process of filing a formal complaint to the state on behalf of our disabled relative. Interesting but not surprising, we’ve since discovered there are other former and current tenants with similar complaints. The Maddens and their deceptive practices are not long for this world.

Locals call the place crazy horse. Apparently it was built(the rumor is with out permits) for low income single people, as single person habitations. Some people also call it the tomb stones, cause looking up the hill from town level it looks like the 12, 3 story building look a lil tomb stoneish. You have to take this place for exactly what it is. A low income affordable place to live. The are 1 bedroom units about 400 sq feet. the rent runs about 850 – 900 bucks that includes: Rent, Electric, Water, Trash, Basic cable, and Hawaii Taxes. The manager is Fantastic, and if it were rated purely on her it wuld be 5 stars. is located about 1500 feet up. That gives it a fantastic view, and a great temperature(about 5 – 10 degrees cooler than sea level) The property is at a steep angle but is very park like. Complete with geckos(also inside the house), a plethora of bugs(but odd enough not roaches) visiting wild turkeys, pigs, chickens, pheasants, birds of all shapes and sizes and of course. some insect that sounds like electricity, and our buddy the kokie frogs at night! the apartments are all you need to live a decent life. My unit has a living room, a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. the kitchen has full size, newer appliances. the toilet and tub/shower conversion are full size, clean and in working order. the apartments themselves are made inexpensively(laminate cabinetry, peel and press tile, and curtains to divide bedroom from kitchen.(the lay out is a large rectangle(Living room, kitchen, bedroom with the bathroom off the bed room) *DON’T FORGET400SQFEET* For a single person just going to work and wanting a place of their own. it’s college living the high life!
