This place was dirty and gross. There were flies in the air flying on/around food, a girl was rolling dumplings on a booth table with no gloves, and it was a big mound of about 10lbs of raw meat just sitting out in the warm dining room. This place was just, gross. Avoid.

Slow service. Food wasn’t that great either. I will give the place another chance as the prices were reasonable.

I love fast food Chinese food but this was pretty bad and not in a good way. I had the noodles with dried fried beef and it was SO oily, like way more oily than normal.

Drove all the way from Waikiki to get manapua here. I think it’s the best manapua in the area. Service is fast and friendly great Chinese food all around plus it’s good to get out of Waikiki

I’d heard good things about the food(not the atmosphere), so ordered takeout. Crispy gau gee, pork fried rice, Kung pau chicken, and Mongolian beef. The gau gee was good, but everything else was marginal(fried rice) to pretty bad(chicken and beef). The fried rice was boring, and the chicken and beef were blandly seasoned — zero spice at all, and these are supposed to be «hot» dishes — and of poor quality meat. My family ate very little, and we threw the rest away, forgetting the left-overs. I’ll be looking for Chinese food elsewhere from now on.

We’ve never had a bad experience here and probably visit about once a month for either dine in or take out. Service is great and we are always greeted with a smile. Attitude is everything and being valued as a customer is appreciated in this day and age. Favorites for our family: salt/pepper squid, house cake noodles, roast duck, crispy gau gee, honey/orange chx, ANY soup… honestly we’ve never had anything bad here. Everything has been very good, not phenomenal, but very good. Parking is difficult during peak hours, with less than ten spots available. If you are turning left on to Oneawa St. when leaving, use patience and be careful. Love this place, it’s been good to my family.

Always a smile from the owner when you walk in. The only place in Kailua to get great pork hash — one of the best(and biggest) in the island and manapua. Chinese chicken salad is one of my favorites here also.

So, I’m still not feeling well. That means the family gets a lot of takeout. Tonight, it was Chinese. We have had takeout from Mui Kwai before, and it was good and fast. Hubby ordered over the phone and was told the order would be ready in 10 minutes. By the time he got there, most of the order was ready, the only thing that was missing was the Chinese Chicken Salad. At least they had double checked the order before he left the restaurant. The beef broccoli had larger pieces of beef. The broccoli were the usual size that you expect. The egg blossom soup was HOT!!! It seemed very fresh and had a great taste. The crispy garlic chicken was the BEST! It was boneless and garlicky and just plain awesome! The Chinese Chicken Salad was a very large portion. The dressing was a little sweet, but the kids were ok with it. The char siu was tender. The crispy roast pork was disappointing. It was crispy at all, and just seemed to be reheated. It was seasoned well, but you expect it to be crispy if the word crispy is in the menu. So, although the order was done quickly, the food was alright. The cost of the food was a bit expensive($ 60) for the quality. But when mom is sick, you have to make do. Will I be coming back for more soon? Probably not, but if I ever am sick again, I may send the family back.

Have been eating here since I was a kid. This place is getting worse and worse. Food is sloppy and extra greasy.

Second time here, last time was awesome. Seems to have a new staff, meats had a funny after taste. Pork hash stuffed tofu tasted like old pork hash. Beef choy sum, beef tasted old. Gon Lo Mein was chow mein with sprinkles of char siu and cabbage. Poor service. Last time I’m dining here, so disappointed.

So I was in Kailua, running errands, and when I was done, I was craving Chinese food. So when I could not think of any Chinese restaurants in Kailua, or the Windward side, I turned to my trusted Unilocal app. So here is why New Mui Kwai Chop Suey II receives two stars from me: 1. Location: I’m familiar with the island, but some stores are not on main strips or in shopping malls, so signage is necessary. Well, after I began using my GPS to find this place, I could not see where they were located, after passing them twice when I was following my GPS. As most restaurants I know use some kind of neon sign, this place had none. I finally figured where they were, but it was dark(evening was setting in) so if they DO have a sign, they surely weren’t using it when I was looking for the place. 2. Appearance: Walking in was a shock because it did not give me the sense of an efficiently-run Chinese restaurant. Most Chinese restaurants have that«one» fast worker who is doing everything. Well, here, all I saw were a man, a woman, and possibly their daughter working at a comfortable pace. But that meant I waited a long time before ANY greeting. And even as I was standing at the counter ready to place an order, I was still ignored because the female was behind the counter talking story to someone. 3. Wait time: They must be popular, because people kept coming in and out, picking up food, and patrons coming in to dine. After placing my order, I realized this place is pretty run down. Ceiling falling out, chaos all over the place. They were also using a dining table in the middle of the restaurant to store all the plates, cups, utensils, etc. maybe for convenience or space, but definitely it was an eyesore to me. 4. This is what I ordered: House Fried Rice, Hot Sour Soup, Beef Broccoli, Lemon Chicken, Roast Duck w/Bun, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and a bag of Shrimp Chips. My total was well over $ 80! That shocked me, but what made it worse, was the quantities were smaller for take out. I was so disappointed in seeing that my $ 80 worth of food would have costed me $ 50 at Kunia Chinese Restaurant or some other cheap Chinese place. 5. Quality: This is their only saving grace, and the only reason why I gave two stars versus one star. The quality and the taste of the food was on par. As it is difficult to mess up Chinese food, some places actually succeed at doing that, so this place can make okay tasting food. I was impressed with the food, since we drover over the H-3 to Aiea, and when I finally dug in, it was ok. 6. Recommendation: Dine in to get what you paid for in quantity, because their take-out containers are not equal in portion to what you get when you dine in. This might be a gross assumption, but as a Hot Sour Soup fan, I know this type of soup comes in a huge bowl. The take out container was for one serving. The Beef Broccoli was in a small takeout container as well, with ten-or-so pieces of broccoli. Describing it doesn’t do it justice as I’m sure the portions would have been worth it. But everything we ordered were in small boxes when I was expecting«plate-lunch» size boxes. That might help you visualize what I’m saying. Good luck!

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. I came over from Honolulu on the bus just for some of my comfort foods that are always delicious. As each dish is finished in the kitchen it comes out piping hot. I order Gonna Lo Mein, Chicken Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Chicken and half an order of Spring Rolls. It was all delicious and the portions were generous. I have leftovers for 3 – 4 more meals. The restaurant itself is a bit dated, but it doesn’t take away from the food. There is a constant flow of people in and out whether to sit down and eat or for take out. There is music playing in the background, but you can still enjoy conversation with others. As long as the food is consistently yummy, I will be back.

MSG check yes, but I love it anyways. We ventured here as it was one of the few restaurants open on New Years Day, go figure. My grandparents always brought us here as kids, but it was my first time back with my new Unilocal Elite status ;) We ordered the usual peking duck, ginger chicken, bittermelon(eww), noodles, and a bunch of other things MSG has erased from my memory. The bonus was they were also selling a bunch of treats on the side for the holiday, like crack seed and shrimp chips yum. Food coma definitely induced, doctor’s orders.

Walnut shrimp is really good. This is a real hole in the wall but the food is good! Food gets 5 stars… décor gets 1 star but you’re not eating the décor!

I recently ordered some crispy gau gee from New Mui Kwai to bring to a potluck. The gau gee came with a good portion of meat and was extra crispy! Yum! A few days later, my boyfriend and I dropped by the restaurant for dinner. We decided to order a set dinner for 2, which costs $ 28.95 and comes with wonton soup, fried rice, beef broccoli, and lemon chicken. I didn’t care much for the fried rice and beef broccoli, but the wonton soup and lemon chicken were good. Service was ok, but the restaurant’s interior seems outdated and in need of improvement. Parking is located on the side of the restaurant and there are about 8 – 10 stalls. Honestly, we’ll probably do take out instead of dining in next time.

Conflicted star award. Would like to award 5 stars due to legendary status of Mui Kwai Crispy Gau Gee(sort of a deep fried pork stuffed wonton) in my family… it’s a Kailua post-surfing tradition for my partner reaching back decades. Always ordered«to go» and wolfed down straight out of the bag while driving to some scenic location. Huge portion of pork filling compared to any other crispy gau gee I’ve gotten at other establishments. So I was eager to finally sit down and eat a full meal in the restaurant. I wanted to love it. But… First of all, this is the type of place that … right up until you grab the door handle and pull and the door actually opens, you are wondering«are they really open?» despite the neon«open» sign in the window. There are two entrances, in the front and on the side, and neither of them really looks like a proper entrance of an open business. Construction dust and debris from the work upstairs drifts down over the whole property. Anyway, once inside, our table was spotless with a pristine white cloth tablecloth under glass. Service was prompt and friendly with the old-school free pot of hot tea that’s becoming an endangered Chinese restaurant tradition. BUT… looking around, the drop panel ceiling is just umm, horrendously stained, and while the floor was being industriously mopped while we ate, other spots were not as clean. And the food… the menu is huge so I really didn’t know what to order. Prices seemed quite low… meat entrees for $ 8 with shrimp dishes at $ 11. I think I ordered the wrong things. My niece got a HUGE lunch plate for $ 7 that comes with fried rice and 3 different entrees and some fried wontons… she liked it… but said the fried rice was just OK. Meaning she didn’t actually eat any of it. Not normal for her. I was way too hungry when reading the menu so I ordered lemon chicken and beef and tomato chow mein. What arrived was beef and broccoli spaghetti-type lo mein. Not a tomato in sight. I was hungry. It was hot and sitting right in front of me. I kept it and didn’t complain. Although by the time I write this, the leftovers are almost gone… I wouldn’t order the lemon chicken again, it just wasn’t *delicious*, and the mistaken beef broccoli just was bland. Not delicious either. It’s the first time I’ve eaten in a Chinese restaurant where I felt like they needed to use MORESALT ! Only AFTER I paid did I notice the big box of home-made manapua on the counter. Most people were coming in for take-out. I could understand why. I didn’t want to sit under that ceiling either, once I really looked at it. So, I was hoping I’d have an awesome experience at a somewhat unfashionable old-school throwback Chinese dive restaurant. I didn’t get that. I’m willing to try again though. i feel like there is probably dishes on the menu I will love once I find them. The price was certainly reasonable enough.
