Big Island Steak House

I use to come here when I visited Waikaloa… BUT… when I visited last month… it’s now closed! BOOH!

Apparently this is the only place in King’s Shops that’s open for breakfast. In any case, I ordered the steak and eggs thinking that the steak would be good here.
BAD IDEA.
It could be just a fluke, but the steak came out tasting like the meat had gone bad. However, I have to say that the eggs and hash brown were pretty good (3.5 stars), and service wasn’t bad either. I also liked the macadamia nut french toast (3.5 stars).
I politely told the server that my steak wasn’t very good, and she offered to get me something else on the house. I was already full by that point, but I did score an extra pineapple juice for free.
Very disappointing since this is supposed to be a steakhouse. Maybe I should have asked for a free meal voucher, because that’s what it would take for me to go back here.

The crab cakes are fantastic. The fourth star is just for the crab cakes. Without them, it’s a solid three. The crab cakes are dense and flavorful.
The steak is okay, but I expect much better for the price. And they were a bit overcooked. The service was good, and I like the atmosphere. There are two beautiful saltwater fish tanks at the entrance, and lots of interesting ocean paraphernalia on the walls. Kind of a dark, rustic, romantic feel to the place.

ok… i have to admit, this place is cheesy and touristy. I would normally avoid places like this when traveling. However, hungry and limited on options… we walked across the street and took our chances.
I had the rib eye and jorge had the prime rib. Both were cooked perfectly! The sauteed mushrooms were so good… i even took home the leftover sauce!!! Sides that come with the meat are bleh. Steamed veggies were overcooked and mash potatoes lacked salt and butter. But the steaks really do live up to other great steakhouses. The server was awesome and actually recommended AGAINST the more expensive first option i wanted to try. He was right because I LOVED my rib eye.
