When I found out that some of the staff did not have proper licensing, I became very concerned. This is just an opinion.

Shane Hampton is a color wizard. He is passionate about it and mixes potions like a mad scientist to ensure you have the perfect hair color for your skin tone and for your life style. I’ve been a client of Shane’s for over a year now and followed him from Blo. The move was a good one. Zafar is located in the heart of Power & Light, but parking options abound. Shane has also negotiated free parking for his clients in the hotel lot behind the salon. Or you can park at Cosentino’s and get your ticket validated. The salon offers more privacy and space than Blo. Amenities are all around you when you enter. They offer a full range of services to make you feel pampered. Shane’s done some amazing color on me in the past 10 months, but my last visit engendered mad compliments. People stopped me at a recent festival to rave about my new red and ask where I go it done. If you want fun, beautiful, flattering hair, Shane’s your guy. Check in with Unilocal and get a discount.

I was referred to Roneisha or Reshawna(can’t remember the name) by my mom, who visits the salon regularly and always returns with nice hair. My appointment was at 5:00. I arrived on time, and was told it would be about ten minutes. No problem. Twenty minutes pass. Then thirty. No update from the receptionist, nothing. She arrives at around 5:45, walks right past me(I’m the only one waiting), and disappears to a back room. At 6:00, I asked the receptionist if he knew how much longer it would be. After asking her, he returned to say that she had had to pick her child up early and that it would be another 20 – 30 minutes, at which point I cancelled the appointment. Seriously? I have two kids. I know that sometimes things come up, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Your kids come first. But wouldn’t you think to CALL your client when you realize you’re not going to be able to be on time? We’re not talking about fifteen minutes, we’re talking an HOURAND A HALF. It would have been nice to avoid getting a sitter, driving in the snow, and through March Madness traffic. I would have been happy with an apology — which I did not receive, either from the receptionist, or the stylist herself. Highly unprofessional, and very disappointing. Two stars because my mom receives good service and because the clothes at the boutique were well priced.

I absolutely love this one stop shopping beauty experience. A group of my friends scheduled a girls night out and experienced the spa and boutique services. We all walked away happy beings! A special thank you to the owner for her friendliness and creating a fun atmosphere for me and my girlfriends!

I found Randy Smith at the Zafar Salon and am pleased to have him as my new stylist! I had been moving from place to place for the last year but now I think I have found my new«salon» home! Randy takes pride in his work and makes sure you are pleased with every aspect of your cut and color! Close to my home and office. They also validate parking tickets which is a big help with limited free parking.

This place, excuse my French, is a shi*hole. I made an appointment to get my hair straightened here, while staying in town for a wedding. Not that there’s a lot of options in Kansas City. But this place would never fly in Chicago, let’s put it that way. So get here 10 minutes early, to see if they’ll be able to squeeze me in a couple minutes early. Told the guy that I was in a hurry, when he told me the stylist was running behind. I suggested that he wash my hair to keep things moving a bit(he works in a hair salon, how hard can this be??) and he looked at me like I was crazy, but obliged. After all, the place was DEAD. And there’s a girl sitting at the front on her iPhone, ignoring the rest of the world. The front desk is covered. He takes me to the back and poorly washes/conditions my hair. That’s fine. I wasn’t expecting much after seeing his look of surprise after I asked him to do it. Notice that the ONE stylist(it’s a SATURDAY, PEOPLE… during FASHIONWEEK in KC!) is cutting a man’s hair, so I think… cool, she looks like she’s almost done. The guy puts me under the dryer and I wait. And watch. As this stylist finishes her customer, sits down and starts chatting it up w/some girl. For like 15 minutes. Dilly dallying around, completely oblivious that she has a customer. AND… she’s already behind in her appointment time. Let’s put it this way… if I’d have brought product for my hair I’d have gotten up and left. RUDE. FINALLY, after sitting under the dryer for a good 15 minutes she tells me to come over. Hospitality anybody? Uh, no. I told her that I just needed a quick straight iron and wanted her to keep it from frizzing up(hint: please use an anti-frizz product). She used products that I swear she purchased at the CVS down the street. Nothing salon-worthy at all. And quick she was. And frizzy was my hair. At this point I’m taking a mental inventory of what I have in the room to fix my hair. She completely avoids any type of style to my hair and releases me. And charges me $ 40. Really? $ 40? I predict this place not lasting much longer…

Dalton is a GREAT stylist and colorist! I really loved going here. My manicurist was great too. My mani/pedi lasted for a long time. The only qualm I have is the distance from my apartment(which they can’t change) and the prices. I got my hair colored, cut, glazed, and mani/pedi and it was about $ 200! Great service, but the prices are a little high for my budget.

Unfortunately, I think I’m done here. While I’ve left with fabulous hair the two times I’ve been here, I just don’t understand why they can’t keep stylists. I called the other day to book an appointment with the stylist I had last time, and what do you know… he’s not there anymore. If you read my last review, this seems to be a recurring theme. The place hasn’t even been open a year. They still get 4 stars because I HAVE been happy whenever I left. But I’m a gal who doesn’t like change. When I find something I like, I stick with it. So I’m off in search of a stylist in this town who might stick around long enough to do my hair two times in a row. This may be a challenge.

This might possibly win as the manicure with most attention to detail I’ve ever had. My nails look better than they ever have before. Secret: I have nasty cuticles. In fact, I’ve been known to cringe when looking at my hands, thanks to those crispy bits around my nails that have at once intrigued and disgusted me since I was a 12 year old picker. All of these accolades and only three stars? Well, my visit was not without mishap. I arrived pressed for time and told the manicurist that I only had an hour for a manicure/pedicure. One hour and 40 minutes later, I walked out of there impressed with the hard work of the manicurist, but dismayed at the 85 dollar cost(35 for the manicure, 45 for the pedicure, plus 20% tip meant over 100 dollars for a rush job. What the wha?) I wish I could be one of those people who can set aside an afternoon for a spa treatment, but I’m not. I know I *need* a manicure/pedicure, but I keep putting them off until it’s desperation time(as in, I need to wear open toed shoes, or, I need to look presentable for a function). My issue with this place is that I indicated my time restriction and well, they only have one pedicure chair, so of course they tried to fit in someone in between my manicure/pedicure. My gal was awesome, worked on my feet at the manicure station, gave me a free parafin treatment due to this issue. Not her fault. I can’t say that enough. If Zafar wants to be taken seriously as a nail salon in addition to being a hair salon *and* boutique, *and* warrant spa prices, they need to invest in another pedicure chair or two. My toes are seriously smudged right now due to me having to immediately put my shoes on after getting a pedicure so that I could make my appointment on time. Should I have tried squeeze in a manicure/pedicure with such a time constriction? Absolutely not. I will own up to that! I still give Zafar a generous three stars because my manicurist was awesome and the owner offered me a free pedicure when I expressed shock at the price of the whole shebang. They are trying and I applaud them for having excellent customer service. Now, just add those pedicure chairs, a nail dryer or two and we’re in business. OH! And hello, for 45 dollars, I’d appreciate some callus removal. My heels are still looking like hell right now.
