A must go if on Big Island! Everyday they serve something different. And it’s all made with Aloha!

Don’t let the appearance deter you! The Korean fried chicken was to die for. Also, the burger patties were like a perfectly seared homemade meatloaf – try it with the kimchi. Just wow!

Moco Loco Burger — think hamburger smothered in brown gravy with onions and an egg. So much food for one to eat. Upgraded to waffle fries should have gotten the Hawaiian pasta salad. Chicken chop suey — daily special Pretty tasty stacked with tons of veggies. Pork steak — daily special Pork steak smothered in gravy. Pretty tasty. Everyone was so very friendly and very welcoming.

This is a local hole-in-the-wall spot. If that’s what you’re looking for stop here! Their menu consists of 5 – 6 burger options and two daily specials. We split one of the specials, the chicken katsu, and it was a good amount of food for around $ 9. We also got a side of waffle fries for $ 3, which was a big bowl full of them. Yum!

A small mom and pop home style restaurant in Hawi. The locals from Flumin Kohala recommended this place. We decided to give it a try and I am glad we did. The portions are huge. Great tasting burgers and loco moco was uno.

Oh wow. Wow. Little place on the road west of Hawi, with amazing home style food! The pork adobo was truly delicious, with nice tangy flavor from the seasoning; I could not put it down! Their fried chicken and gravy was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the loco moco plate was as good as any on the islands. The owner, Tracey, was incredibly friendly. Lovely visit!!!

Great simple place with basic reasonably priced food(burgers mostly) and *super* friendly and fast service. The burgers are great, and their macaroni salad was also the best I’ve had at any mix plate place, with a touch of garlic, a good balance between sweet and salty, and not too much mayo. The only negative is that they seem to have unpredictable and limited opening hours, but that’s kind of common at a lot of family-run little places in Hawaii.

Small little charming place that has daily specials and burgers year round. Service was spectacular; extremely friendly and would do anything you wanted to make sure customers have a great experience. I ordered the daily special kalua pork quesadillas and was nothing less than completely satisfied. Each bite had exceptional flavor and the portion was large. Couldn’t be happier with a meal. 10⁄10

Great little place! We were in the area when a local told us about Fig’s. I believe he said the cows were all grass fed. Regardless, it was amazing food and super friendly staff. My family of four each got different things, loco moco burger, loco moco plate, paniolo burger, and hamburger steak burger — all delicious and fresh. However my one regret is not trying their specials(which was kalua pork at the time of this writing). Definitely can’t go wrong with this place. A must try if you’re looking for local gems away from all the tourists.

I LOVE Figs. We order food from here all the time. Best burgers in North Kohala… The figs burger is my favorite. Also don’t be afraid to try their specials, their Mochiko chicken and baked spaghetti is the bomb. Not to mention that talking to the owner Tracy will always put a smile on your face because she always has a smile on her face.

Food is delicious! Stopped by for a breakfast. Had eggs, hash browns, Portuguese sausage and pancake. Also had their catering at a party. Yummy pork with gravy, macaroni salad, pork belly. Can’t wait to have some more again.

This place was a nice surprise. I was driving on the road to the north side to see Pololu Valley and then there were a whole bunch of these really quirky, home-style restaurants on the road. I pulled into this one, and there was a cheery owner working the register. I order their baked chicken. It turned out really good and very cheap. It was a good chance to try out Ono Hawaiian food. There was a steady stream of locals coming in.

I love figs! While my girlfriend was pregnant she craved the«Fig’s Burger.» Since we have made this a monthly lunch place if not weekly. The burgers are huge, juicy and packed with extras such as grilled onions, bacon, sautéed mushrooms and for a dollar more seasoned waffle fries. Portions are large, filling, and delectable. Call to get the specials as they change everyday. The fried ahi, and fried chicken with gravy are my two favorites; I’ve never been disappointed eating here. Price is excellent especially for Hawaii and just Kohala in general!

Probably one of my favorite meals on the Big Island. At the end of the trip, we were both sad we weren’t as hungry and split the plate that we had ordered. GARLICCHICKEN was the bomb! By far the best I’ve ever had in my life. It was very flavorful, cooked to perfection with the right amount of garlic/oil. It came with rice and option of side, which of course we got mac salad. Friendly service. The food came out quick. Good stuff. I’d totally come back here if I ever find myself on the Big Island in the future. Mahalo!

Figs Mix Plate is mostly a hamburger place. I think there were at least 10 different types of burgers you can order. All the burgers come with fries. Figs also has specials on a outdoor chalkboard which on our visit were pork and chicken plates with delicious sides. The dining area is small, but very comfortable. I ordered a bacon and BBQ burger that I was raving about for hours afterwards. We talked with the very friendly owner after our meal and left the place having had a great experience. A meal and a drink will cost about $ 10 a person. It’s very worth it.

Two things I learned about eating in Hawaii: 1) stated hours of operations are mere suggestions, and 2) restaurants are bound to be out of something. On our second day on the Big Island, we were excited to eat some good local food and cleanse our taste buds of the horrible food from the Hale Kai restaurant the night before. We drove north to eat at Minnie’s and for some reason they decided not to be open that particular Monday although their sign said the should of been. Island schedule… no problem, so we decided to try Fig’s down the street. You can’t miss Fig’s. There’s this large hamburger cowboy caricature in the parking lot(we forgot to take a picture). They only serve one type of mixed plate a day and it’s scrawled on a big chalk board outside of the restaurant. That day it was Korean chicken and tripe stew. As someone who loves Korean chicken and tripe, I was stoked. The Korean chicken was pretty bomb. It’s like a fried chicken coated in this sweet, spicy sauce. The GF and I fought for every last scrap of meat and skin. The tripe stew was just ok in my opinion. The stew was too tomatoe-ey for me but honestly, it’s probably how its suppose to be made. It just wasn’t my thing. We also ordered the kimchee hamburger but after 10 minutes of waiting, the owner came out and told us she ran out of kimchee. Out of kimchee at 11AM. Sure. Whatever, we ended up ordering some order burger which was ok if not overcooked. Probably not coming back to Fig’s unless Minnie’s decides not to be open again.

Tried their Fig’s burger. I was not impressed. It was a good burger and the wait staff was über friendly, but it just wasn’t something that I would fight to get back to. The burgers are supposed to be the local favorite. They have daily plate lunch specials so I guess that will have to be the way to go next time… whenever that might be.

I have what has been so far, a nearly fail safe way of finding cheap, tasty and tourist free food when I’m on vacation anywhere. Avoid most places in tour books and travel magazines, steer clear of parking lots packed with rental cars, and most of all, look at where the locals eat. This almost always works, but today it failed miserably. After a camping trip to Pololu valley, food was running low and I’ll be damned if I was going to eat granola for breakfast again. Figs met all of the criteria for a good meal, so we stopped by. While browsing the menu I had this sinking feeling, but being hungry and not really wanting to walk out my friend and I both ordered omelettes and hash browns. The place was small and had about a dozen other diners, most of whom were already eating. Our order was a little slow to come out, but nothing too bad, after all, they had a very small staff. What really got to me was the food. I had gone out to the car, and upon returning I found a rather sad sight. A small, charred pile of hash browns next to a very greasy little meat lovers omelette. The hash browns were burnt, enough said. The omelette was very greasy, overall one of the most disappointing ones I have had. It’s hard to not enjoy food when you have been on a long hike, but this was one of those exceptions. My experience with most restaurants in Hawaii is that you get good food, and you get a hell of a lot of it, but this was the worst food I have had at a restaurant in recent memory. The workers were friendly, and the place had kind of a relaxed, homey feel to it, but I can’t think of much else positive to say. I like to think that they were just having an off day, but either way, I won’t be coming back to find out.
