This is your classic hippie knickknack shop –incense, handmade soaps, patchouli oils, crystals, jewelry, Grateful Dead buttons and related trinkets and bijouterie, every bit of it organic, fair-trade and non-oppressive(I’m not being snarky, half that description can be found in the Peacetree website’s own SEO metadata!), all watched over, at least the day I visited, by a beautiful & kindly woman with long dreadlocks flowing out from underneath of a multicolored knit tam-o’-shanter. It’s the kind of place you’d expect to see on the main drag in Yellow Spring, OH or northern California or any college town that tends to keep a hold of a significant number of left-leaning students long after graduation, or dropping out. What struck me as remarkable about Peacetree is that Kenosha doesn’t seem to be that kind of town. I guess it is the home of Carthage College, which, who knows, is perhaps more that kind of school than one might expect from an Evangelical Lutheran institution. And this woman was the third dreadlocked individual I had randomly come across since arriving at the Kenosha train station, just half an hour earlier. So maybe Kenosha’s got some kind of scene going on. Anyhow, Peacetree Originals has managed to thrive selling fairly-priced, ethically-produced bric-à-brac for over a decade, so obviously it, and Kenosha, are doing something right.
