The bikes here range from OK to good. I should have spent the money for good.
They were real quick to grab a bike, get my credit card, and get me out the door.
There was virtually no safety check on the bike, and it was issued with a few mechanical problems and had to be turned around and taken back a few miles out. after that the front breaks failed the next day.
They have a real laid back aloha spirit, and in general I’m all for that, but not when it comes to a piece of machinery that shares the road with autos.
Would I rent a bike again next time in Maui — Absolutely!!! but probably not here, and I will be more particular about the condition of the bike next time.

These guys know there stuff, i just needed a mirror. and a gel seat cover, and they had several choices in stock. Franks son helped me put on my mirror for my safety and now back on the road cruizing. i would recommend them to all my clientel who race bikes or just want to cruise, thx alot. Like Will C, I was hesitant to rent from here after reading some of the Unilocal reviews. And I had the same great experience that Will C. had. I reserved a Trek Madone for a week using their convenient online rental system. The bike was ready and in excellent shape when I arrived. They quickly put my pedals on and correctly set my seat height.
Even though busy, Tim and Jeff were very friendly and helped out with route ideas. Time even loaned me a couple of CO2 cartridges that I could return free of charge if I didn’t need to use them (and I didn’t). I managed to join in on one of their Wednesday morning rides and had a great time with my 4 new riding buddies!
To repeat Will C., don’t judge a book by its Unilocal review. Go check it out for yourself. (And consider your own attitude when you deal with any business (or anybody for that matter). I would not hesitate to rent (or shop) from South Maui Bicycles the next time I am lucky enough to be in Maui.

If you are looking for old, worn out bikes that have not been properly tuned, you need to try this place. You will get your money’s worth here. Nothing good to talk about. Since they do not have that much competition, it does not matter what rating I will give them anyway.

22 dollars for a trek bike for the day? That is a pretty sweet deal. The people that worked there that i talked to were all laid back and cool.

I brought my bike in to South Maui Bicycles because the gears were slipping. They fixed it and gave it a «tune up». The turn around time was excellent and my bike works perfectly. The store personnel were friendly and helpful. I am also especially pleased with the price, it was only $ 25, I am very happy!

Great rental. Picked up a Cervelo R3 for a few days and service was great. Only negative was the chain, it was filthy and should have been cleaned I think. Fit was adjusted nicely and bike ran great.

I was really hesitant to come here after reading the reviews. Ended up checking them out anyway.
I didn’t find them to be rude at all. After about 2 minutes of walking through the door, both I and the sales guys knee I want going to be buying anything from them but they were support helpful anyway! Gave me a bunch of cool info on hikes and rides.

The prices are higher than many other places on the island and the service is a joke. All of the people I tried to get to help me acted as if they were above the job. They did not ask any basic questions while tuning the bike, nor did they seem interested in answering any of my questions. Honestly, next time I will drive a little further to avoid doing business with South Maui Bicycles.

We simply rented two city bikes for a day. Customer service was great, they were friendly and helpful and willing to give us directions and travel tips, even regarding non-​bike related questions.

After unpacking my personal bike after shipping from mainland, I noticed the rear dérailleur was funky and not shifting correctly. I phoned up Zach at South Maui Cycles and inquired if they’d have time to take a quick look at the bike.
I rolled down to the shop about 30 minutes later and introduced myself as the person who called earlier. Jeffery (in the groovy black eyeglasses) immediately stopped what he was doing and put my bike up on the stand. In less than 5 minutes he made the necessary adjustments and sorted through whatever had become funky during transit.
After learning I would be in town over the weekend he invited me to join the metric century West Maui loop ride the shop is hosting this coming weekend. $ 35 includes fully-​supported ride, commemorative event T-​shirt, BBQ and beer. Sounds like a fun time and a ride I’ve been looking forward to doing for several years.
No charge for the tune up and I was out the door in under 10 minutes. Based on this shop’s location and full service shop, I can imagine it can get pretty hectic during peak season, though my experience was totally positive and I would recommend South Maui Cycles to anyone.

I brought my bike in here the other day to have my rear brake fixed. I hadn’t used it for awhile and it had gotten bumped around in storage so it ended up needing a bit more work than I thought. Tim took care of everything while I waited and charged me a lot less than I thought so now my bike is good as new and I’m a happy biker. Thanks Tim!

I have rented expensive carbon fiber bikes from SMB and sent friends over the years and have reached the point of total disappointment. The last two times I rented Tim handled the transaction and I was struck by how unfriendly he was. He clearly has reached the point of burnout.
Time for him to move on.

These guys are super nice and they know their stuff. My wife wasn’t comfortable with the way the handlebars were setup so they changed it for her and it worked perfectly. $ 22 a day for a nice Trek bike was very reasonable. Thanks Tim and company!

My wife and I rented a couple Trek road bikes for a day during our honeymoon. Like many things on Maui, this place is a bit pricier than what you’re likely to find on the mainland, but we weren’t too surprised. We rented a Trek 1 series aluminum frame bike and a Trek Madone carbon frame for about $ 100. We were satisfied with the bikes and will probably come back here if we find ourselves in South Maui again.
It’s important to note that it isn’t a mass-​tourist bike rental shop. It’s a Trek-​authorized dealer with bike rentals. So if you are a super-​casual cyclist with an interest in just tooling around the island, you might want to look at one of the scuba/​bike/​outdoor gear rental shops elsewhere on the island.

I rented a road bike for several days while on vacation. It was a high end road bike in very good condition. The staff was helpful and friendly.

Just got back from another trip to Maui and had another wonderful experience at South Maui Bikes. This time I brought my own Trek Madone and Jeffrey expertly put my bike together and gave it a fine tune up. He also carefully boxed it back up for me. Tim, as always, was super helpful and fun. I would highly recommend the shops social Wednesday morning rides. SMB is a great little shop and they deservingly have my respect. Thanks again Tim, Jeff, and Zack!

I’ve used this shop for years and love the service. If they seem busy its because they are good at what they do. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Not a great experience at south Maui bicycles. We went the day before to ask about suggested routes and other info for my husbands ride. The guy seemed more bothered and uninterested in our questions. Kept saying, «you can do what you want.» They do not open until 10a. My husband would have rather left early to avoid traffic. $ 50 for 24 hours, we only used for 4 hours. On a side note, there is a ton of car traffic and was very windy. My husband is an avid cyclist, would not rent again.

SMB road bike rentals are by far the best deal on the island. For $ 140/​wk I rented an aluminum frame Trek which held up very well for several short and long trips, including the ~67 mi from Kihei around the West Maui Mountains and back to Kihei. You can get higher-​end frames at other shops (Paia and Kula I believe for $ 160 and $ 180/​wk) and they’ll outfit you including a car rack, but if you’ve got all your own gear and know mostly what you’re doing, SMB is great.
The shop is very busy but they’re flexible and staff still do a great job and offer good advice. Shawn even gave me tire-​changing refresher.
