As I write out my check to pay John Deutsch for the absolutely horrible, incomplete«survey» he did of my property, I figured I better do my part to warn others of his bait-and-switch tactics. His company staff assured me when they scheduled the appointment via email that I would receive a written report about the trees on my property. Well, 1. John showed up early to the house and then left before the appointment time because we were not home. Conveniently, he left us a note written on one of his pre-printed, fill-in-blank tree assessment forms so I could see what I might hope to receive as a report on our property. 2. After several attempts, my husband was finally able to get ahold of John who then returned to our property, an hour or two after our scheduled appointment, and he made a quick walk around the property without writing any notes, taking any pictures, or marking anything down. About a week later, I received an email from his staff asking for payment for his visit. I replied by sending the text of the staff’s previous email assuring me I would receive a handwritten report on my trees. Another week passed and I received a two sentence email from John saying for his report that basically all the trees were fine and that I could cut one down near the driveway if I wanted more space there(um, duh?). John’s «written report» did not contain any information about the trees on my property — number of trees, species, vigor, defects, potential for failure, etc. at all. So, smart consumers, if you have a desire to learn anything about the trees on your property, beyond what a typical 5-year-old could tell you, especially if you think you will be investing serious money in landscaping and you want to do so with a foundation of knowledge of what is already growing on your property, do not hire John Deutsch. You’ll be throwing your money away, if you do.
