Wednesday night Zumba with Molly is a blast! Very family friendly atmosphere, as is typical with most YMCA locations. I also go to the Brentwood /Mid-County Y and have had great experiences at both.

This YMCA is the nice lady in front of you in line at the grocery store who slowly gets out a checkbook and starts to open it to write an actual check well after the cashier has finished ringing up her purchase. Summer camp is good; staff are friendly… but I agree it seems stuck in 1976 or thereabouts. Definitely needs some content and physical plant refreshing — and for the love of God, let me be able to easily and quickly register for classes and camps on the website, not in person. It’s strange to most people nowadays that you have to go to the front desk and fill out an actual piece of paper and sign your name on it and turn it in — that isn’t the way the world works anymore.

I am retired and new to Kirkwood. I joined the Y in August, I payed through year end in full. Today I wanted to pay for the first quarter of next year. I was told in no uncertain terms that it was not allowed. My choice was pay a year in full or let the Y deduct automatically from my bank account. I think that I have the sole right to determine every month how I want to spend my money… Not to mention how that could open account to scammers Shame on the Y… Christian… not any more!

The clientele at the Kirkwood Y has changed a lot over the past 15 or so years, in no small part due to the opening of the Des Peres Lodge and the 24 Hour Fitness(that’s not open 24 hours) down the road. This Y seems to attract the young and the old(er) set. Kids participate in swimming lessons, summer camps, karate lessons, teens frequent the weight room, and the middle-agers take Zumba, Pilates, aerobics classes and use the rest of the facilities. I rarely see members in their twenties. So, this is not the place for the singles to mingle! That said, the Y is a welcoming place that usually isn’t super-duper crowded, although it can be a dogfish-eat-dogfish scene in the lap lanes at times. I do wish the pool were bigger. Three lanes can get cramped pretty quickly. We retain our family membership because our non-driver can still get there on foot and the in-town location leaves little room to excuse a missed workout. No frills, no thrills, but s’all right anyway.
