Unfortunately, my experience with Big Al’s has taken a turn. I used to love coming here for the sourdough crust, but they have since removed it. The last time I was in, we ordered two pizzas. One was fine, the other was on thin crust instead of thick, and the toppings were wrong. We were only one of a few tables in that night, so the waitress was sure it was supposed to be our pizza. In the end, they took off the cost of the toppings for the toppings we didn’t get, but they didn’t want to remake the pizza. The biggest problem with this is I was trying to show off an awesome local pizza place to some friends from out of town. Big Al’s made a big impression, and not in a good way.

Solid, consistent, probably my fav in LaX. River Road House is the best but miles and miles from here, so this substitutes well. More expensive than most but worth it for good pie. Wings are not bad, either.

Only go if you want to be ignored. Went in at 1230 on a Friday for lunch. There were two tables with customers, which should not have been too much for the two waitresses who were just standing talking to each other. I sat there for approximately 10 minutes before one of the waitresses acknowledged my presence. She started to walk towards my table, but only was delivering the check to one of the occupied tables. Apparently two tables at the lunch hour provides all the customers they want. This may be a shock to them, but there are plenty of other restaurants downtown who actually want customers. Surprisingly it was only a short walk to another restaurant that was happy to serve me. Never again.

I haven’t been in here for years and from first walk in am very pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and updated look. They kept e original trinkets of the car and pone but the straight up look is more presentable. My son and I sat at the bar to catch the Big Ten tourney on the huge tv. We were greeted by a bartender and a friendly server. We ordered a order of mozz garlic bread and a medium pizza split with my son getting cheese and mine with 4 toppings. The place wasn’t too busy but the crew was working hard getting things done. The cheese read came out in about 8 minutes and was cooked perfectly. Large serving easily for 4 and tasty. Pizza, timed well was out about 10 minutes later and looked and tasted great. They cut their pizza in small squares making it easy to handle for adults and kiddos alike. Great job. The place is big enough for a large party or four and is attached to Carlie’s Bar if you want to belly up after you leave here. Mark and the crew here have done a great job rebooting a legend in downtown La Crosse. Great job.

Big Al’s is a fun and tasty place to eat for the very hungry and even thirstier. The pizza can be a little on the pricey side of «average,» especially the specialty«Big Al» variety, but it’s probably worth it. The beer is very affordable and delicious, with the house Alpen Brau beer and the local Downtown Brown ale going for only $ 7.50 a pitcher. For the quality, it’s more than worth the price. Be forewarned that, due to Big Al’s managerial policies and the slightly-behind-the-times computer system, the paying situation may get complicated if you are going with a large group that needs separate checks. Don’t let that keep you away, though. Fun, tasty, and satisfying!

Sat at the bar and ordered a beer. Well, turns out that I could not run a tab and had to pay for each beer individually. Tried to order food and I couldn’t because they didn’t want people taking up room at the bar instead of drinking. Well, hello! People can eat and drink alcohol at the same time. What a crap of a place. I travel all over the world and this place is the only one I’ve seen do this crap

They have the best pizza I have ever tasted, and the price is reasonable for the size of the pizzas. I usually get ham and pineapple on my pizza and they really don’t skimp on the toppings. If you are interested in alcoholic beverages, they have a bar and multiple TVs to watch sports on. They even have an arcade so you can let your kids have some fun too. The staff is always nice, the place is really clean, and the décor is nice to look at. And did I mention that they deliver?

I love Big Al’s! They have amazing pizza, amazing burgers, amazing calzones… I could go on and on. And the wait staff are all so friendly and helpful!

We’re out-of-towners, checking out Big Al’s on a recommendation from a local. It was a good steer. Decent enough pizza, fine service even on a busy Saturday night and a nice atmosphere. The dining room is a bit loud is my only complaint. There is better pizza out there but I wouldnt know where in La Crosse. It’s A-OK

Were there on a Saturday evening and good service even though it was busy. Pizza was good – good amount of toppings and nice big chunks of veggies. Super cool ambience, not tables on top of each other either like some other places. Only negative is pizza is a little pricey – medium pizza close to $ 25.

Great Pizza! Sauce appears, tastes and has the consistency of fresh made. The cheese and crust were equally as fresh and tasty. I travel all over the U.S. And this is a must have next time and EVERYTIME through La Crosse. Atmosphere was pretty cool as well, tunes in the background weren’t blaring and the randomness had me rockin with my custom ordered delicious pie! Hell Yeah Big Al has it goin on… Wonder if he’s gotta cute single daughter…

La Crosse has slowly become a town of big box restaurants and retail stores, so it is refreshing to still have a family-owned business like Big Al’s pizza on 3rd Street to go to for a pie and some beers. I recently took my parents out to have the Big Al, a pizza that is pretty much a Supreme, but has always been called the Big Al. It was a Saturday night, and the place was packed. It felt like they might be slightly understaffed for the crowd, but we kept our patience as a seat opened. I saw a larger group leave because the staff weren’t moving fast enough for them. Tidbit for groups, call ahead. It is easy for a couple to show up and find a table, but if you have a group of 6 or more, show some patience. We sat down, waited a bit more for the server, ordered our drinks and pizza at the same time… we are smart like that… and the pizza was out about 20 minutes later. I love a place that cuts the pizza into squares, it just tastes better to me. Everything was hot, fresh, and it filled me up. Most importantly, it tastes amazing cold the next morning. Looking for a good pizza in La Crosse? Want a cold pint of New Glarus Spotted Cow, or a local La Crosse brew? Stop in here… it’s a small slice of the area.

Service was so slow that I have to give them a low rating. Pizza wasn’t that great either.

Pretty decent meal to go from Al’s. The salad was fresh and had nice ingredients — all for a decent price. The calzone was freshly made and full of the toppings of my choice. I would say the calzone was a little undercooked because it was very doughy in the center. Overall worth the price for a take out dinner.

Ordered a large pepperoni and sausage pizza. 16″ was $ 21. Thin crust with way too much sour tasting sauce. Plenty of cheese and enough toppings. Just needs a little sugar in the sauce. Delivery was about a 45 minute wait on a Monday evening around 7:00pm.

Order a local brew on tap! The pizza was really good, although our wait after ordering seemed extraordinarily long. It was delicious none-the-less. Our server was very kind, and attentive. He even brought my child animal crackers in the wait. Can’t argue with that! I recommend the pineapple, jalapeño, banana pepper, green olive, & pepperoni pie. Nice work Al.

Service was friendly and beer wet and tasty. Ambiance was nostalgic Americana and they do get an extra star for the 1950’s convertible hanging over the entrance way. Despite the initial accolades, the proof is in the pudding. After all, you go out to pizza for the pizza. And this pizza was some of the worst I’ve had. We ordered the classic«Big Al»(pepperoni, green peppers, onion, etc.). The toppings were piled so high it looked like an open-faced Philly cheese steak. Yet, flavor was absent. The crust was thin, which I generally like, but tasted stale. Even with red pepper flakes, the pizza tasted like cardboard with red pepper flakes. Cheese was squeeky, copious… and flavorless. I couldn’t even appreciate the flavor of the veggies. Quite disappointing. We brought home the leftovers and shared them with a friend who, without prompting said, «This pizza’s not that good.» If you love quantity, Big Al’s your place, because even the small was too big for two people with a large appetite. But if your taste buds have any vote, go elsewhere.

Came here for dinner after work. apparently it’s my coworkers’ favorite spot. Granted it’s their Monday night dinner spot, but the place wasn’t busy at all. Pizza is passable, but doesn’t really fit the bill as great pizza. The crust is a little stiff and resembles frozen pizza, but the sauce and cheese aren’t too bad. Wings were chopped off chickens on steroids. not really true, but they were huge. Lastly, in the land of cheese. the fried cheese curds are apparently to die for. Not bad, but I’m not dying for them now. 3 stars for what could be a solid bar stop, but don’t order the pizza and just get a few drinks and apps, then it’s off to another place for dinner.

This is NOT just a pizza joint. This is THE pizza joint in the city, if not further afield. Big Al’s has taken up two storefronts on 3rd street and is packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The main dining room is totally kitsch with a old town cutouts on one wall and a Cadillac on the other side of the room. But none of that really matters because you are here for the pizza. The crust is thin and crispy. The sauce is plentiful but not overpowering, and does not have a sweet taste. Toppings and cheese are well balanced and include everything from pepperoni and sausage to artichokes and spinach. Pieces are cut into squares. I have ordered in a few times and had them deliver a few times and have never been disappointed. It’s my favorite place for pizza even if it is a bit pricey.
