Frequent diner at Freret location but in recent visits the cheese fries have been lacking cheese. There’s cheese on only about 10 fries(Posted picture). I commented to the service person about lack of cheese. He acted as if he couldn’t care less and commented that this is how they come. Otherwise, food is good. We like sea dog and traditional beef. The Chili is good too.

German beef brat with mayo, onions, tomatoes, and the fries with chili, yes please. Puppies loved coming out to eat, and even the temperature didn’t deny us a warm spot out in the sun.

(To the tune of «Poison» by Bell Biv Devoe) Y’all, I must (warrnnnnnn youuuuuu) I’m feeling hunger pangs in my tum (Situation is serioouuuuuusssss) Few too many tipples of that rumm… I’m oh-so-RAVENOUUUUUSSSS But headed over to Rue Freret Need something deliciouuuuuussssss May I suggest hot dogs?(yes, you may!) It’s driving me outta my mind Great menu, and it’s so hard to find Can’t figure out which I will eat sausage, gator, bratwurst Dat Dog’s addictiiiiiiveeeeeee Never wanna leave this place… Dat Dog’s addictiiiiiiveeeeeee And now, I’m gonna stuff my face… Ok, I can only do Biv so much justice, but figured I’d bring some flavor to a review for a spot that delivers so much of their own! I nabbed an alligator sausage because«when in Rome» and had them go for the Chef’s Choice because who knows better how to top this meaty mass? The result was a terribly sloppy dining experience complete with no less than ten napkins, oodles of satisfied«mmmm“s from my dining partners and I, and a belly that was full for the next 8 hours. My buddies and I split the bacon cheddar ranch fries(divine, nice even toppings) and I honestly couldn’t fit another bite of real food in my belly until a late dinner(this was an early lunch). PERFECT hangover food, great with a beer or wacky cocktail of the day(I personally recommend beer, there’s too many flavors to add much else!) The price is right for the amount of food you get, and the vibe is fun. Bring a jacket in the colder months, there’s no heating and the doors stay open!

The hype is REAL! Yes it is a hot dog but it is by far the best hot dog I have ever had. I got the sausage dog with grilled onions, jalapeños, cheese and bacon OMG! The best EVER. I went for the normal one this time because I was a little scared but next time I promise to go all in. Also had the fries which were hot and fresh as everything else. The atmosphere is awesome. Topped it off with a Shirley Temple lol. Went by my moms after we left and everybody wanted to know where we went to eat because we smelled some good. Definitely a nice place to bring friends visiting looking for some authentic cuisine.

This place is great and has a lot of ‘dog’ options. As a non meat eater, I’ve tried the«not dog» veggie patty and the vegan Apple sage. The veggie dog was as it sounds, basically a veggie patty slices and put on a bun. I was not a huge fan of this, but I did love the vegan sage dog. The sage dog had an actual hot dog shape and a great taste. The sourdough bun is delicious, but it is definitely very thick so I recommend filling it with lots of toppings. The cheese fries here are delicious, especially when you add some ranch. If you eat outside, the patio is dog friendly which is nice. Attire is very casual. Parking is easy to find and the staff friendly. You do not need reservations there are plenty of tables and you order at the counter.

I am not a fan. I know that’s not a popular opinion of the Hot Dog empire that Dat Dog has built, but it’s true. First off, it’s too expensive. It’s a hot dog and there’s nothing gourmet or fancy about meat stuffed into a casing. Sorry. Second, it’s annoying to order. You wait in one line for the hot dog and a surly college student takes your order. If you want beer/booze, you have to order at another register(so, another line). There’s also something disenchanting about a 20 something behind a register who looks like they don’t want to be there… in a Hawaiian shirt. Finally, I’m fairly certain that the sign read«Dat Dog» — Not McDonalds. It has become a mecca for parents to bring their kids for birthday parties. Screaming, running, jumping 7 year olds. Awful. I felt like saying something to the staff about how it’s supposed to be a restaurant and not a ball pit… but they probably would’ve just blankly stared at me. The *only reason* they’re getting 2 stars and not 1 is because of the hot dog buns. I’ll admit, they’re pretty good. Not worth ever going back for though.

This place is awesome! I’ve been here 4 times now and it has been amazing each time. I’ve had the Guinness dog, the fried cod dog, a regular dog, and a crawfish dog. They were all fantastic and the crawfish dog was incredible. I’ve gone with chefs choice of toppings each time and have never been disappointed. Just wish the hotdogs were a little cheaper, but it’s still worth it.

Good stuff! The ranch fries were great and the crawfish dog was awesome! Plus they had a big screen for football!

You have plenty of options here. Between all the sausages and weiners and the myriad of toppings, you can almost never eat the same thing twice. Protip: ask for them to grill The onions for your dog. One hot dog is about $ 8 now but it will fill you up. The sourdough bread is the real winner here. Soft, but crispy, sweet and delicious bread holds all of the toppings perfectly(even if they fall off). The next thing on the menu is the fries. The fries alone are amazing, but cover them in bacon and ranch or chili and cheese and its a party. If you are feeling adventurous try the white trash fries, they have almost everything on them. The addition of a full bar with a large selection of beer and some strange cocktails was a smart move. Nothing goes better with brats than a nice cold beer!

I love Dat Dog’s food. Their ambience? Perfect dirty hipster chic. Prices? Fair. However, I’ve had a lot of bad experiences at this particular Dat Dog. Tonight, they lost my partners order. After waiting half an hour after everyone else was served, she asked about her order. They gave her the very nebulous answer«We’ll check.» After another 15 minutes of waiting with no response, one of the other people at the table asked about her order again. They unapologetically said they lost it and had to make it right then, after far too long waiting. We won’t be coming again.

I can’t review them for the actual food that they are famous for, their what my friend calls hot dogs… Those are not hot dogs. At least not in my opinion. What I did have was a float :) The float was good and they accommodated me for the exact float that I wanted. It was delicious! They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and a variety of sizes of tables and styles which is always good. They have free wifi but you have to ask the server for the code, it’s some local radio station but I can’t remember what it is. It’s decorated in a somewhat trendy way and there are plenty of things to photograph and enjoy visually. It’s just an all ’round trendy place. Parking is pretty plentiful around the block and we were lucky enough to get a spot right in front. Service is pretty quick but not as quick as fast food. You order inside at the counter(they take credit cards) and then they bring it out to where you are by calling your name. To note, the outdoor space is not uncovered so even if it’s drizzling it shouldn’t be too bad.

The hot dogs are pretty great. I like the traditional dog topped with chili of course, but on another visit, I really also enjoyed the traditional topped with siraccha sauce and diced tomatoes. That’s been my favorite thus far. I also tried a smoked sausage with pico de gallo, but that combo was ok, but not as good as I had hoped. The white trash fries are excellent. They’re basically fully loaded cheese fries and the toppings are what you’d tend to find on a order of loaded nachos. I could just get an order of the fries and be full. The only cocktail I’ve ever had here is the Pink Panther which is vodka based and I thoroughly enjoyed that as well. Of all the locations for Dat Dog, I think this ones my favorite. I like the outdoor seating and general festive atmosphere.

Tasty dogs with all kinds of crazy, exotic meats! I had the duck dog, and since I had no idea what to pick for toppings, I chose the ‘chef’s special’. This is leaving your decision to the experts, and it worked out well for me. My duck dog had some kind of sweet chutney, yellow mustard, and bacon on top! The sweet and the tangy from the two sauces together was delicious! I also had the crawfish etouffe fries, and it was salty but good. It’s a bit rich when you are also having an elaborate hot dog, but I was glad that I tried it. They have a big patio seating section with cute lights and picnic tables. There was also a handful of local beers on draft and some craft sodas. I was happy to try this place and eat like a local!

I loved the food here! The atmosphere was really nice as well. I followed everyone’s reviews and got the white trash fries and chose a Guinness dog. The white trash fries were good, but be prepared for A LOT! There is no description on what is on them so think dumped nachos but on French fries. It was a bit much for me, and I tried my husbands cheddar bacon ranch fries and THOSE were good. I added andouille sauce, creole mustard, and fill relish to my dog and that was just about perfect. Everything complemented the next. I got one drink, their drink of the day,(a dirty cat or something?) and it was decent. Overall, I will definitely go back and try other new things, but I’d recommend giving the cheddar bacon fries some credit.

I might be in love with a hot dog… Can I say that? Well I just did! No regrets! Why can’t I eat this every day?! Second time eating at Dat Dog and the first was at the Frenchmen location. I’d have to say this location is the better one that I’ve experienced. In the Frenchmen locations defense… It was late on Frenchmen street with the art market going on next door, dba music across the street and me being the only sober gal in the joint. I think that had a lot to do with the mania of the place. One thing I’d like to see change are the hours of the magazine location. For a Saturday night to close at 10 I thought was pretty early. It’s hard to know what to order because of the large selection of goodies you can get! So yummy. The servers are very personable and will help you order if you’re struggling through the menu not knowing what to get.

Certainly not the place to go if you’re looking for an haute-cuisine dining experience but for what it is this place can’t be beat. I stopped in for a quick lunch and will return every time I’m in New Orleans. Great atmosphere, good selection of cold draft beer and super friendly, efficient staff. I had a dog smothered in crawfish étouffée… AMAZING!

Too much hype for the place. The hot dogs were fine and creative, but I wasn’t totally convinced. If you enjoy a simple dog, look elsewhere, but this is a great place to brag about trying to folks back home. I got the gator dog – totally tasted like chicken, but not bad! My friends agreed that the fries were really great but the dogs were just okay. Good atmosphere and friendly service when you have trouble making a decision.

BLUF: Dat Dog is great but it is all about the bun and toppings. Great atmosphere and hip young crowd. Fun time but not necessarily a food lovers dream. Dont get me wrong, Dat Dog is great. I eat here too much. That being said I go for the beer, the people, the atmosphere and the just the overall fun. The actual food is not knock your socks off. The best part of the dogs are the buns. The buns are crazy good but over power everything else. They have a lot of different types of sausages but with all the toppings and the huge bun you dont taste the sausage as much as a sausage lover would like. Again, it is great overall but just not a killer sausage place even though you think it would be.(I would be tempted to get it without the bun to see how it «really» is but the bun is so good I dont think I could pass it up. I guess I could just take the bun off and eat it separately… thats it… I figured it out… I am a genius! I’ll try it next time) The atmosphere is a lot of fun and energetic because it is 75% young and outside. Really fun place to eat/drink outside. Staff is really nice. The place is really crowded and you order at the counter so be prepared to wait to order and wait for food. Also be prepared to pay in cash. Overall great fun place and I’ll go back again and again. I just dont think the food is worthy of a 4 or 5 star.(I would never take it to go)

Finally had a chance to try this place after being away from New Orleans for so long. Many times I’ve envied my friends’ pictures of their dogs and always said to myself, «must try this place asap!» To be honest, I was pretty underwhelmed with the dogs. Whomp whomp. Food: I had the duck sausage, my boyfriend had the alligator sausage, and we also threw in some cheddar cheese fries w/bacon & ranch. We thought that everything was just okay. Maybe we set too high of expectations? :( Service: It’s counter service here. Our cashier was friendly and was more than willing to give me recommendations on what toppings to add with my duck sausage. I really have nothing bad to say about their service. Good olé’ southern hospitality. Tip: this place is CASHONLY. There’s an ATM on-site though if you can’t access cash beforehand. Overall, while we didn’t think that this place was bad, we’re just not sure if we’d go out of our way while we’re in New Orleans to eat here.

Another hotspot in New Orleans that I have made a return on is Dat Dog, a sausage joint with drinks and the biggest variety of sausages you’ll ever find. They serve alligator, andouille, crawfish, and even duck! One of the first people I met here recommended me their bacon cheddar ranch fries — which are heavenly, but deadly. But I will recommend it to ya’ll, for the sake of your(un)health. Dat Dog lets you create your own, or you can«chef» it and let them create a dog for you. Their condiments are endless, and the combinations are even more so. I am a duck-lover, so on my first visit, I had the Duck Sausage, but was a little disappointed.(It didn’t taste like duck one bit and was textureless). I’ve been waiting the crawfish dog to be in season, but smoked sausage isn’t too bad either. The ambience is full of bright colors and is the perfect hangout for anyone and everyone!(Except the bar, of course) The Uptown location is spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating — complete with TVs, if that’s your kind of thing while you grab a drink…
