We came here for a few days for our mini moon after getting married. Schedules didn’t permit us to go on a full honeymoon at the time, but we knew we wanted to get away to somewhere secluded and quiet. I found Bluestem online, and after talking with Chris(the owner), we booked a few months in advance with no issue. The space was exactly what we were looking for – quiet, relaxing, and secluded. There was a separate entrance for us to the upstairs loft(not handicapped accessible). The bed was comfy, the bathtub was old and awesome, and Chris’ cooking was delicious. There’s nothing like waking up and having someone make breakfast for you! She was able to point us in the direction of a great restaurant for dinner and a farm for fruit picking. One of the only things that would have made it better was a microwave in the suite. We had a mini fridge, but if we wanted to heat something up or get some extra silverware, we had to walk through the house and potentially disrupt Chris and her husband(awkward for all involved). I think we may have thrown Chris off a bit because we probably aren’t the typical B&B guests(20-something young professionals), but we really enjoyed our time. Their house and property are beautiful, and the price was great. I would happily return. It’s a great location if you’re trying to go to Notre Dame or even south Chicago.

This is the perfect place if you need a quiet and peaceful getaway where the idea of bed and breakfast is much more like staying with smart friends who enjoy fine things. The décor is hard to describe, but better explained as craftsman/farmhouse/Shaker, etc.(Not the usual and unfortunate Victoriana gack of many B&Bs). LaPorte might seem like an out of the way place — not quite in the Dunes/Lakeshore area of IN, but it is close enough that it doesn’t matter(15 – 30 min). Though we didn’t partake in the local wineries, there are several in the immediate area and Bluestem can set you up with info on tours and the like. This is a one-group-at-a-time B&B and as far as I am concerned that’s the way it should be – no strangers you have to chat with at Breakfast! Guests have the top floor of a renovated house(complete with a history and genealogy if you want to see who lived there in the past). This includes a master bedroom, library(with pullout) and a second room with twin beds. It is perfect for a small group of friends, couples, or family. The library has a great collection of smart books. Chris, the proprietor is a lovely and extremely gracious host and her food is delicious! The breakfast options are wide ranging, and the view from the breakfast area is perfect – a bit of a barn, some flowers, a dappled light.
