Good food. Good prices. Good bar. Food is served fast. Downfall is you will probably have a stomach ache from half the fryer of grease you will eat with it with it. Not the best chicken ever but for the price it’s good especially with their fries.

Had to try the chicken I heard so much about. I thought it was good but could not understand all the hoopla about the ”crispies”. I would and have been back several times and opted for carryout. Way too packed full of people for my liking. Reminded me of my Chicago with the long line and sardined in dining area. The chicken we had was devoured and liked by all.

We live a stone’s throw from Del Rhea’s Chicken Basket and White Fence Farm and this place blows them away. The best fried chicken I have ever had.

Not sure where all the hype comes from? It’s an experience to do once and say you did. The chicken? Kinda bland and very greasy. I’ve had better broasted chicken from 20 places. I like at least a little spice and flavor. Rips has none. The chicken is large and juicy but beyond that nothing special and certainly not worth a line out the door. It’s a cool little local place and I’m all about supporting small businesses but to say that this place has the worlds greatest fried chicken is an exaggeration of epic proportions. Rips chicken isn’t in my top 20. Go there once to say you did. But don’t go expecting the worlds greatest fried chicken. It’s not there.

We have been going to Rips for decades. My grandparents went there, then my parents, me, my kids and now grandson. Five generations of family, eating THEBEST fried chicken in the world. We went in tonight and I told Bill that it was our grandson’s first visit, which make 5 generations, and he gave him a really nice Rip’s onesie for free. Great guy, real classy! If you want to tear into the best chicken in the world and cheap and tasty fries and mushrooms, and $ 2 pints… Rip’s is the place. It’s worth the drive, drive 2 hrs or more, you will love it and come back for more.

We visited Rips this evening, we had planned to be there before 9:30pm traveling from Louisville Kentucky, but were caught in traffic for better than a hour due to a traffic accident. We called ahead at 10:25 pm to place order, when we arrived at 10:45 pm, the owner Jeff asked us to stay and eat in even though they were closed already. What a super guy Jeff is and the hospitality was off the hook. The chicken, mushrooms, cracklins were all excellent and was consistent or better than our past visits. We are from Northern Wisconsin and stop by any chance we get but at least twice a year. Thanks again Jeff for your hospitality and great conversation!

Called an hour away to get the best Chicken served in Illinois for takeout. Told the fryer guy who answered the phone that I was in Davenport, Iowa and he asked what time I needed it by. As I arrived to pick up my chicken he gave me the freshest from the fryer — packed it quickly and I was out the door. For 3 quarter light orders of chicken and fries I ONLY paid $ 16!!! Rip’s is the best in their business. Their customer service is great and I appreciate each one of them.

This chicken makes my pecker stand up. Eating at Rip’s is kind of like going out drinking and going to bed with a porn star. You’ve seen everyone else eat it and it looks great. Then, it’s your turn. You put your mouth on it and it’s even better than you imagined. You eat the hell out of it and it feels like you’re in heaven. Then, you wake up the next morning and you’re suffering, wondering why you ever did it to yourself in the first place. Then, you do it again the first chance you get…

Been here once on the recommendation of everyone. Had to wait in line 45 minutes for horribly greasy chicken served on white sandwich bread(to soak up the grease). Had the runs for days! Won’t be back. Definitely not worthy of the hype! Go to Angelo’s in Spring Valley! Much better and crispier! Even the skin is crispy!

My wife is from Dixon Ill and took me to Rips on my first visit 20 years ago. I was like… it’s fried chicken… what’s the big deal? 20 years later we still make it a point to go back every trip. Simply the BEST fried chicken you will ever have. Casual ambience in a cozy environment. Get the pickles and crumbles for an appetizer! Can be a long wait but well worth it… have a beer in the front bar and watch some football while you wait.

Tried the ¼ dark and the ¼ white. The place was packed but it didn’t take too long. The fries and fried chicken were both excellent. Lived up to its reputation for sure.

Came on a Wednesday. One of the first few tables to be seated, and it filled up fast. Nice open dining area, tho a bit cramped with the amount of seating. Placed our order for a little of everything. Pickles, mushrooms, cracklings, chicken, chicken strips, and coleslaw. Coleslaw was the best part of the meal, along with temperature of the chicken. Other than that, if grease is your choice of flavoring, this is the place! The chicken needs some kind of spice, beside ketchup, and salt. Although juicy as all get out, it lacked in flavor. My group was sent here on recommendation of area locals, and they haven’t steered us wrong before, however this is one of those places we won’t be coming back to. Service was good, drinks strong, and portions were exponential, but the flavor just wasn’t there for any of us. At least the food was priced right.

The wait is long for these greasy, juicy fried chicken, but people don’t seem to mind. Even if you can find a seat at the bar without waiting for a table, the wait for the chicken is still imminent. $ 5 for ¼ dark chicken and $ 5.50 for light and they come with fries. The chicken is lightly battered and cooked to perfection. The fried mushrooms are also fantastic!

I grew up eating this chicken, and will eat it until the day I die. Simply put– This is THEBEST fried chicken you will ever have. I can count one one hand how many people I know that don’t like the chicken. Want to know the Legend that is Rip’s Chicken? Google it. It’s the only fried chicken place I know of that has its own Wikipedia page. People drive hundreds of miles & on busy nights stand in line for an hour or more for this chicken. Rip’s was named ‘Best In The Midwest 2010″ by Midwest Living Magazine. They must be doing something right!

Best fried chicken I’ve had hands down. No contest really. Menu is pretty limited otherwise, though the lunch menu apparently had some sandwiches. We waited about an hour to eat, and had a couple beers in line. The place seems to have been updated, though it lacks for atmosphere a bit. The excellent ultra crispy chicken makes up for all that though. Minor nitpick is that the fries were limp and soggy. If they were lightly battered like the chicken and mushrooms, they’d be dynamite. Lanuti’s had better crispy fries across the street. I appreciate that this place is something of a family tradition for the locals. Lots of families and large groups that seemed to have the timing down to a science. Service is quick as possible and they go through the line taking pre-orders. Expect to wait. A few decent craft beers including 3 from Bent River, also cheap pitchers of Hamms. I’d return for a carry out order any day, but would hang out at Lanuti’s instead.

A little spot in a nice little farm town, that looks recently updated. Rip’s seatings are funny, so it’s worth explaining. For example this Sunday, doors opened at 12:30, tables are filled, and the family card games commence until the 2:30 service. We arrived at 2 and got on the waiting list, while our order was taken. Had a local draft at the bar… Food started flowing out of the(fully visible) kitchen right at 2:30 – what they call«1st pan(or was it tray?).» We sat 15 minutes later and were promptly served the best fried chicken in memory. That’s saying something, because I’ve been to the original Babe’s near Fort Worth, TX. The chicken is battered lightly, seasoned deftly, and fried so HOT the skin melds with the batter, which makes for some wonderful textures. It’s almost tempura-like in texture. Fresh cut fries. Fried mushrooms. Fried crispies(tailings from the fryer, served as a crisp snack)…everything is out of that molten hot perfect oil bath back in their clean kitchen. Order a ¼ dark or white, or a ½ either way. The«½ white» is two breasts/two wings. A BIG portion. Fair prices. We were all more than happy. When in the area, Rip’s is a must-eat place. Just be prepared for the wait.
