Oh Sushi Don how you have continued to fail me. I once loved you, now every time I visit I am more and more disappointed. The past few times I’ve eaten there I’ve thrown up shortly after the meal, although the food is tasty. I thought it was an isolated incident but when it happens more than once, you start to see a pattern. The service, if you dine in, is horrible. The staff is friendly, but it takes forever for anyone to come over to greet you, get anything to drink etc. Be prepared for no substituting, no matter how simple or of you are willing to pay more. My most recent visit was a to go order for two. Although the dishes both stated they came with soup the to go server told me this is only if you dine in, which is not listed. While the rice bowls normally come with several sides of Kimchie etc, we were given one small container with two types to share. Farewell Sushi Don, we were friends, but no more

Great food but terrible service. I’m a regular at sushi don and come virtually every week. I follow a very healthy diet and I use sushi don as my weekly guilty pleasure, or cheat meal because I love the sushi so much. I would say that 8⁄10 times I come in to eat, the servers screw up or forget something in my order, for example forgetting my octopus seaweed salad or a roll in my order. Despite this I still return every week like clockwork because I simply can’t live without it as my cheat meal, and also because I work as a waiter, as a result I understand how confusing and chaotic it can be as a server at times, and there’s nothing maleficent or noteworthy about an honest mistake. However, my most recent experience really boiled my blood as a fellow worker in the food service industry. I came in on a Tuesday lunch as a member of a party of 4 and we all ordered 2 specialty rolls. We were served our water and the accompanying miso soup and house salad. I truly adore the house salad because of its unique and tasty ginger dressing, and I always ask for a refill and am never charged. Being a creature of habit, I, like usual asked for a refill of my house salad when our sushi rolls arrived and our waiter replied, «All right one moment». After about a solid 10 – 15 minutes and one sushi roll eaten later, it still hadn’t arrived, so naturally I assumed he forgot, and so I asked him again the next time he was passing by if I could have a refill of house salad. He acted like I had never asked before, as if to hide the fact that he completely forgot, and didn’t apologize or offer any sign of guilt. When I received my check, it totaled to the lower end of 19 Dollars, 19.26 to be exact. It turns out our waiter charged me 2 Dollars for the tiny bowl of house salad, and I asked him about it. He said its always 2 dollars extra after the first one, which was extremely unusual to me becuase the past half dozen times I ate at sushi don it was free and the first time in the past during a different lunch I specifically asked my waiter if it was an extra charge before asking for a refill, and he replied that there was no charge for it. Being a waiter, I can’t help but feel inclined to leave a large tip whenever I eat out, and always leave over a 20 percent tip at least. Even though I was bothered by the waiters attitude to my salad and the fact that he charged me for it without even asking if I knew, i still intended to leave a hefty tip, and left 25 dollars in my bill with the intention to give him the 5.74 dollar tip, which totaled out be a 29.8 percent tip. Our waiter returned with 3 checks for my friends, but not one for me. I was confused why I was the only one who didn’t get my check back, so I asked him at the front desk where my check was, and he said he assumed because I left a 20 and a 5 dollar bill that I didn’t want my change. That REALLYTICKEDMEOFF. What server could possible have the EGO to think they EARNED A 30PERCENTTIP after forgetting something a customer ordered and pretending they didn’t screw up at all. That day I left Sushi don with a foul taste in my mouth despite the delicious food. This being said I simply admire the store so much that i’m still going to give it 4 stars because if you want to go somewhere for consistently tasty food plus a wide range of menu items which have enough authenticity to satisfy both conservative orientals and comfort seeking individuals of other ethnicities, Sushi Don is the place to go. Also in every other visit the wait staff while careless many times has always been warm and caring.

The menu is huge so come in with an idea of what you want to order, the fish is fresh but very pricey for what it is. Great presentation, just be prepared to spend more than you expected…

The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is a lot of fun. The only thing that is not good is the service. We waited to be seated for a very long time because they were so busy, which is fine. But once we were seated we waited 15 minutes before anyone even came to our table with water or to ask if we needed anything. If the service can be improved I would give it 5 stars!

Oh I’ve been to this place so many times! The lunch menu is a steal & I love to go there on the weekends to grab brunch with friends after a long night of drinking. You can get a bowl of Yukgaejang soup(spicy beef with vegetables & glass noodles) with any maki roll of your choice on the side plus the salad & miso soup for just a little under 10 dollars. Can’t beat that! They have a variety of sushi rolls to choose from. Standard special rolls like Rainbow or Dragon rolls are, ugh, standard –just like what you would get at any other sushi restaurant. The Don’s Specials features some rolls that are unique & more on the adventurous side for some people. The Super OMG roll is the one that gets lit on fire to be served warm and is pretty popular. I liked the presentation of the roll and the idea of watching fire goes off on your plate, but the taste was ok. The sushi rice was too moist and because the roll was served warm, the flavor of spicy crab & avocado did not come out as nice as they would sound together. To me, it was just a sweet, warm roll — not necessary a bad thing, but there are certainly other rolls on the menu that I’d prefer over this one. The Mountain roll is very good. The crunch and fish tempura added a unique texture to the rice and the ingredients were well balanced. Maki rolls are hard to mess up so they are all pretty yummy. If you’re ordering an regular entrée but also want some sushi, adding a maki roll on the side would be prefect because you can still enjoy the fresh fish without overstuff yourself. Salmon skin roll is the one you should avoid though. A good salmon skin roll should be crispy, but theirs tastes very fishy and the skin is soft which makes it difficult to chew and you can still see the layers of fat on the skin — a huge turnoff! Sushi Don is my go-to place for sushi & comfort Korean food. I also like Heisei’s sushi, but Sushi Don offers a much more reasonable price. I’m only giving it a four star because sometimes the service can be slow. There were a couple times where I literally had to raise my hand in the air to get the server’s attention.

We went there last night. My girls had gone a week ago on Thursday with some classmates from Ivy Tech, where they are finishing High School. They really liked it, and said the half price day was good, so last night we gave it a try. I mistakenly thought that since it was late, and a Tuesday night, it would have quieted down. Big mistake. When we got there the parking lot was full. I drove to the end looking for a space, and then needed to back out. Someone was leaving, so we got a space. Then there were people waiting outside for a table. I got a buzzer and a menu and started to wait too… Much later we ordered, and as other reviews note, it took forever for the food to come. More about the restaurant itself. My overall impression is it reminded me of the Tokyo Subway at rush hour. Well not quite that crowded, but it was a bit claustrophobic for me, and I am not a claustrophobic person. It was not loud, but there was enough other conversation going on so we had to talk loudly to each other, making it all louder. Then the food. It was good, but not fantastic. We ended up getting a large assortment of sushi rolls. I like sushi rolls, but they are not real sushi to me. Of course the cost of real sushi is insane. They were very tasty too. Were they out of this world? No, were they worth it? Yes. Then when we were all stuffed with rice, seaweed, cream cheese and a taste or raw fish, we got the bill. For the 4 of us it came to around $ 45-, which is about what we would have paid for a hole in the wall Mexican Place. So overall I liked it. Yes I would go back. However, if I only want some sushi and other stuff too, I will go to the Chinese Buffet where they have all you can eat sushi, which is as good as Don’s lesser stuff, but not nearly as good as his top end sushi rolls. If I had to pay full price, close to $ 100 for the same meal, I would feel like I had paid too much for what I got. Give it a try on one of the two half price days.

Great sushi and bulgolgi. I love coming here and it is almost always crowded, which is a good sign. The staff has been consistently friendly and they always welcome you upon entering. The only complaints I could possibly make are that the wait time can be quite long and the tables don’t really accommodate for the amount of food you would typically get. Overall, definitely worth trying!

Verdict: The half price sushi might not be worth it Location: Okay Décor: Good Food/Drink: Meh Service: Good Price: Great(on a specials night) Details: Stumbled here on a Tuesday without knowing about the half price off sushi. Imagine my surprise! The parking was a bit tight since there is only one way in and out of the lot and it can get a bit cramped. There was a 45 minute wait, but for half price sushi, that seemed okay. The Décor was nice and the place was clean. The service was really nice too. However, the food took a long time — an extra 45 – 50 minutes once we put in the order. We got a half mountain, lion king and the super OMG. I have read a bunch of reviews about this place being a hit or miss and we got in on a miss night. The rolls(mountain/lion king) mostly tasted of cream cheese, which I find very unappealing. The super OMG was the better out of the three. You could barely taste the fish in any of them(maybe they were skimping on a specials night?). Not that I expected to be impressed by it, but the miso soup and the salad were there just for namesake. Not sure if this place is good for large groups because it didn’t seem like they had big tables or a lot of extra space. Maybe I should go back here on a night where they have everything at regular price. Btw, the menu is 14 pages… double sided!!! It’s crazy huge and I wish they could bring down the size of the menu somehow. Did not get to try any of the Korean food.

One of my favorite places in town to eat. They have a large menu, which can be overwhelming, but I’ve never eaten something here I didn’t like. Open for both lunch and dinner, they have affordable options that will fill you up without making you miserable. They have a «deal of the day» that you can also take advantage of. Some of our favorites include: –Lunch Bento Boxes(I wish they offered a dinner option of this) –Lion King Roll –Super OMG Roll –KFC(Korean Fried Chicken-regular or boneless) with your choice of dipping sauce –Bulgogi(absolutely a must try!) –Bibimbap & Dolsot bibimbap(I like the Dolsot-served in a stone pot. It makes the rice crispy and your meal will never get cold) The staff is friendly, but we have been there a few times when the service was slow. I have noticed it getting better, so they must have done some training or spoken to their wait staff. You also get a piece of candy when you leave(they sell them at the register, they are so good). The seating can get a bit crowded, so if you are planning on a large group you would want to get there early.

Absolutely great, was not expecting the great ambience of the place before walking inside, immediate service and was great at that. It was a bit pricy, comparable to fortune house(unlimited sushi) but the roll I ordered was exceptionally good. Quality over quantity here. Not to put down the quality of fortune house sushi of course.

A great restaurant for being located in Indiana! I’ve only gotten the sushi so far and although the rice could use some work, it’s probably the best I’ve had within the Purdue area so far. Definitely come on Tuesday or Thursday, because they have half off on sushi rolls. But beware, because of the deal, there are a lot more customers towards the usual lunch/dinner rush hours(the line nearly goes out the door). In addition, service will be slower because the restaurant is full. In my opinion a good time to go would be sometime between 4pm and 5pm.

I’ve been meaning to try out Sushi Don for a while since I’ve only heard good review from friends, however every time I am free/want to go it’s on the day that they’re closed haha. I knew there was a special on Tuesday for 50% sushi. I hadn’t eaten all day Tuesday and decided to head to sushi don after class. I got there right as they reopened for dinner at 4:30 and the place was soon filled with people. I was not surprised as i had heard it was pretty popular. Once our table placed our orders we were served our salads, followed by miso soup. The server was patience and recommended some rolls, our glasses of water constantly refilled. Our table got 3 Super OMG rolls which is quite fun presentation-wise. The roll is surrounded by aluminum foil and they add flames to the dish for a exciting presentation, it was slightly alarming at first but everyone got their snapchat’s worth. The only thing about my roll was that it was slightly challenging to eat as the rice was falling off the nori but it was not a big problem and it still tasted fantastic. i also ordered a second roll the Alaskan which is raw Salmon. The fish was fresh and thick. It was soft and enjoyable to consume, needless to say I was satisfied after my meal at Sushi Don. The Atmosphere for the location was nice, clean, and cozy. The seating is a little crowded but it didn’t seem like the servers were bumping into any of the customers so it was comfortable. There was a slight issue while we were paying, as they had misplaced my card which was slightly worrisome but they found it so problem solved. The night finished with a yummy grape flavored candy. Overall the experience was good, the food was great for the price(I paid $ 11+$ 2 tip for 2 rolls 50% off, which was amazing!), and I hope to go again to try out the Korean food sometime. =]

Everyone seems to like the sushi here but I’ve never had it. The outside of the restaurant says it’s «Asian fusion» but the menu here just consists of sushi and typical Korean dishes(think bimbimbap, stews, etc.) The Korean chicken wings seemed intriguing as no other places in Lafayette/West Lafayette serves this. But it was kind of disappointing. You start by first ordering the number of wings you want(5, 10, etc.) and then choose the style and a sauce. I got my wings cooked in a garlic soy sauce. For my sauce I choose«KFC sauce», which is supposed to be sweet and saucy. I enjoyed the sauce. It was more sweet than spicy but I didn’t mind that. The chicken was alright. It was supposed to be fried chicken wings but l the coating wasn’t very crispy at all. It was slightly soggy, if anything. Also, compared to other places where I’ve had Korean chicken wings, the wings were pretty small. It’s was not worth it. I also tried their bulgolgi dukbokki. It came with broccoli, mushroom(the black Chinese kind), fish cake, and jap chae(sweet potato glass noodles). There was a decent amount of broccoli and mushroom, but the dish was overpowered by the fish cake. Also, there were barely any noodles at all. It was such a depressingly small amount I felt like it shouldn’t be included at all. The dish all together was kind of salty but I enjoyed it much better covered in the leftover KFC sauce from the chicken wings. I was also really confused as to why both my dishes came with an orange slice and some grapes. So random. I guess fruit is nice but it just didn’t match the type of food that was served. They also gave a few banchan(Korean side dishes) with the meal. It was just different kimchi and pickled vegetables, but I didn’t think they tasted very good. It just didn’t taste very fresh, and the pickled vegetables had a strange aftertaste. Overall the food here is better than some other Korean/Japanese places around but it’s still not stellar.

Are you looking for an affordable sushi restaurant with tons of delicious options? Sushi Don is the place for you! My husband and I went on a Friday evening and only had about a 15 minute wait to be seated. I must admit my only negative note on the restaurant would be their GIANT menu. Some of you may be wondering, «Too many options?! What is that?!» It looks like pages and pages(and pages) of options that end up being overwhelming. I ordered the dolsat bibimbap(with spicy pork and medium sauce) because it was one of the Friday night specials(30% off) and because I found myself drooling over someone else’s while I was waiting to be seated. Drew ordered the 007 roll. Both meals were served with a bowl of soup. Both orders came out hot and fresh. The egg on the top of the dolsat bibimbap was cooked perfectly! The food was all delicious! I would suggest ordering more than one sushi roll if you are a big eater. It didn’t matter for Drew though because there was so much in the dolsat bibimbap bowl that he filled up on it when I was finished. Craziest thing of the night? Our order totaled around $ 22! We even had both ordered soda with our meals. **Disclaimer: We have heard from locals friends that this place is «hit and miss» when it comes to meals. We were definitely there on a «hit» night! We’ll be repeat customers for sure.

My wife and I stopped by for a late(well, late for us) supper after a meeting in Lafayette. We were greeted at the door and seated right away. We had shumi for an appetizer and ordered 2 rolls, lion king and tempura. Both arrived quickly and were delicious. Between the appetizer, soup, salad, and the rolls it was almost more than I could eat… almost. My wife did end up taking some of hers home. Our server was friendly and quick. Overall it was a great experience.

I stopped by this place on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. The décor is simple and clean, and the menu is HUGE. It offers both Korean and Japanese dishes, various specials, and was honestly a bit too large for me. I spent 10 mins just staring at the menu because I couldn’t decide what I wanted. Finally, I ended up ordering a spicy kani salad appetizer and a Korean chirashi(or hwe dup bap) which comes with miso soup and salad. The appetizer had just the right amount of heat but was a bit too heavy on the mayo. Still tasty though. The chirashi was much larger than I expected and was topped with shrimp, chopped tuna and salmon, roe, crab, avocado, seaweed, and other veggies. There was also a sweet spicy sauce that you pour over it. I’ve eaten many hwe dup baps before at other restaurants and have had better. However, this version was still really good and worth the $ 14. Service was good and prompt. Overall, I enjoyed my lunch here and will return to try other things on the menu.

Love, love, love this restaurant. I meet my son here and he always brings a friend or two along. The Korean fried chicken boneless with the 4 sauces goes so fast the only concern is not burning your tongue because it is so fresh and hot. An extremely crispy coating marries remarkably with any of the four sauces. Try each one. I can’t pick a favorite. Service has been excellent every time. The servers are nice and the sushi chef created some really beautiful pieces. Dragon roll and Lion King roll are favorites of ours. But we’ve ventured into several smaller rolls for fillers and to appease the vegetarian. I have never been disappointed. We have been on a typical college night where the majority of customers are college age students waiting for a table and on a Sunday evening with families(including children). We have never waited more than 5 mins to be seated. It seemed the restaurant was able to accommodate everyone comfortably. If you are looking for fancy décor then this will probably be a 4. But I’m bumping up to a 5 because it felt genuine and maybe it is the delicious meal where I didn’t feel rushed and we all left feeling stuffed and happy. Quite an accomplishment with a large group including a vegetarian.
