Vacation is one of the few times when I can really read to my heart’s content without distractions. At home I usually either buy ebooks or borrow from the library, but when in Maui, I like to stop by and pick up a few cheap used books from MFOL. It’s better for poolside reading because there’s no screen burnout in the heat/sun and because I don’t have to worry about the books getting a little wet. When I’m done, I just leave them in my hotel room. Books range from 50 cents to 5 dollars from what I’ve seen. This location is smaller than the others so the selection is a bit limited.

This is a really neat bookstore located on the second floor of the mall near the Lahaina movie theatre. The staff were friendly, and we picked up some cool books, including Mark Twain’s memoirs of his visit to the islands and a cookbook from the Maui Culinary Institute.

This is a small used bookstore in the main part of Lahaina. I thought the selection was not that great and the alphabetizing/organization could have used some improvement. The prices for the books seem reasonable though — most of the paperbacks were $ 2-$ 5 or so. There was also a crazy old guy there that was like verbally abusing the ladies in front. What. I wasn’t really sure if he worked there or if he was just a customer.

This is Maui Friends of the Library’s third location, located on the west side of the island in Lahaina. It’s a hole-in-the-wall place next to Hollywood Theaters — Lahaina Cinemas on the Upper Level. It’s small location doesn’t quite lend to a varied selection, but it has a decent selection of used books. Some of the prices are abit much. While Barnes & Noble is a drive/bus ride away, for older or cheap books, this is one place in Lahaina you can try.
